K & N air filters....are they really worth their price for an average daily driven Theyota? Do they really last forever, increase bhp? What about mileage? Please enlighten me......Thanks.
5/2/2009 12:09:17 PM
they allow higher flows, but they also let through more particulate, so they're good for high performance applications, but i wouldn't put one on my daily driver.do some googling. there's plenty of info out there on this.[Edited on May 2, 2009 at 12:18 PM. Reason : .]

yup. basically what he said ^ More porosity is not good for long term. Stick with stock air box and you'll be fine.
5/2/2009 12:47:59 PM
don't waste your money
5/2/2009 1:25:53 PM
there are a lot better quality dry media filters out there
5/2/2009 1:45:54 PM
just use an oily tube sock
5/2/2009 3:19:15 PM
^well...thanks for that advice.[Edited on May 2, 2009 at 4:20 PM. Reason : a]

i would go with the fram air hogs for your car. if youre just looking for a few more MPG/HP thats gonna be the best thing. anything is better than stock.
5/2/2009 4:11:10 PM
^ FALSE
5/2/2009 5:56:23 PM
meh on a toyota? i would think so..
5/2/2009 6:01:22 PM
anyone looking for more power out of an air filter is an idiot, if you are looking for better filtration and a longer service life, then its worth the money
5/2/2009 6:06:48 PM
*>STOCK
5/2/2009 6:09:21 PM
might as well just take the filter out and save your money, about the same filtering/power/mileage results.
5/2/2009 10:13:00 PM
what kind of toyota is it where you care how much power it has, anyway?
5/2/2009 10:31:23 PM
afe and accel/holley make some great dry filters for about the same price that are washable/reusablehttp://afefilters.com/shop/details_new.php?partno=30-10154&&brandID=59
5/2/2009 10:36:55 PM
^^its a manual matrix......I know it is not a car for those who care about power, but as I was reading around, a couple of articles indicated that you can get a little bit more by using K & Ns. But there were too many contradictions in all these articles.
5/3/2009 9:12:47 AM
of course you can get "a little bit more" because they don't filter worth a damn. yes, they let more air through. i doubt you'll ever truly notice a difference though. most of the time when people claim something "feels more powerful" after doing something like that to a car it's due to the fact that they drive it harder afterwards and therefore they feel that it's more powerful. it'll definitely let more particulate through though, so if it's worth it for "a little bit more", then go for it.
5/3/2009 10:32:17 AM
it's not worth it. it doesn't make any difference how much power a Matrix has. if if makes any difference to you whatsoever, you have the wrong car.
5/3/2009 1:05:00 PM
see if they dont offer a throttle body spacer for that car. if anything they just sound cool
5/3/2009 3:11:39 PM
or save your money instead of wasting it trying to modify a Matrix. There's nothing wrong with the car--it just is entirely the wrong vehicle to do ANY performance mods to.
5/3/2009 3:13:17 PM
ive seen dumber shit in my life. if the guy wants to mod his means of transportation let him do it

mod anything![Edited on May 3, 2009 at 4:15 PM. Reason : 99whp turbo metro 3 cylinder]
5/3/2009 4:15:14 PM
Sorry I am not intending to mod the car. I was just looking for a basic air filter (11$ filter). Thats when I also saw a 50$ stock replacement K & N which claimed all sorts of things. I was not looking for an air intake kit or any thing of that sort. Anyways I just bought a basic filter.
5/3/2009 4:31:41 PM
thats all most cars need
5/4/2009 12:00:15 PM
depends ENTIRELY on the application, in general it will help airflow, but it completely depends on the car.for instance, while the K&N has higher air flow in the Audi A4, the fact that the rubber gasket covers part of the intake, it actually ends up hindering some of the air from getting through efficiently. there's also some issues from the oil messing up the MAF in the A4, so... while it worked fine in my old SE-R w/ the SR20DE N/A engine, it's entirely different on the 2.0T in the A4 now...[Edited on May 4, 2009 at 12:13 PM. the cfm at a certain differential pressure means nothing if your engine doesnt exceed the stock filter that its designed for

and have you done it with a dry filter? i'm guessing same amount or more.

i hate doing it dry

well you'd have to explain why, because independent tests (all except AEM DRYFLOW) show that K&N has more dust retention than any other dry filter, from what i've seen[Edited on May 20, 2009 at 5:40 PM. Reason : .]

I am a fan of k&n motorcycle oil filters
5/20/2009 7:41:53 PM
you just like the chrome ones wigger
5/24/2009 4:12:52 PM
chrome or black, they're both covered by the fairings. I just like that there's a nut built into the casing that also has a safety wire hole in it
5/25/2009 1:20:22 PM
Yes, it has a built in penisdildonutsack.

I'm also curious about the air filters. I'm not looking for "performance increases" (2004 Mazda 3 Hatch) but the advertisement that they last for life, along with the supposed performance increases makes it an attractive option. You say to save money, but I can buy a $50-60 dollar filter and never change it again, or buy a $6-11 dollar filter every time I change my oil (Synthetic, 10-12K). Wouldn't I be saving money in the long term by just putting in the K&N? Help me oh garage gurus.
5/25/2009 9:26:36 PM
if you don't mind letting significantly more particulate into your engine, then go for it
5/25/2009 9:34:12 PM
what about on vehicles with a supercharger?
5/25/2009 10:53:41 PM
what the fuck does forced induction have to do with whether you want more airflow at the cost of less filtration. that tradeoff has been the crux of every single K&N thread for the last 8 years. take your pick and stop making new threads with slightly different cars as the topic.
5/25/2009 10:58:40 PM
if they're good for high hp cars, they're good for you!
