Looks like he'll be around for a while. Panthers just signed him to a five-year, $42.5 million contract extension. So i guess the answer to the age old question Q: What do we do with a quarterback who throws 6 INT's in a playoff game?A: Keep him for a long time.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4092544[Edited on April 24, 2009 at 5:09 AM. The fact that we re-signed Delhomme isn't a shocker but I'm surprised we gave him 5 years at his age. Doubt he's around for that long though.[Edited on April 24, 2009 at 6:03 AM. Reason : ]

I'm sure this move was to simply open up cap space and back load his deal

yep. only $20 mil is in guaranteed cash. oh yeah, and attn: users with < 2000 posts

NFL contracts are not guaranteed people. 5 years literally means nothing for a shitty player.
4/24/2009 8:29:46 AM
Relax, they are restructuring and freeing up cap room.

Pretty good news for this Delhomme hater.
4/24/2009 4:50:38 PM
who you going to replace him?i think we can all say jake is not a top 10 nfl qb....but he is a top 15/16 qb. if you dont like jake that much we all can go back to the 2007 season....jake just simply picked a bad day to have a horrible game, but the guy is like 49-30 or something in reg. season games, and i think he has won 5 playoff games....i agree there are other qbs that the panthers would love to have, but at what cost? and to move up in a draft and pick some rookie qb or make a trade for an unproven one is not the way to go....if say they made a trade and had a top 15 pick in this years draft, or were rewarded one in next years, whose to say that the qb will be a great one, usually it takes a couple of years anyways to develop one, and by then, our playmakers are aging....i still think jake is our best option, although im not the biggest fan, there aren't many other options to go with, he just needs to manage the game, and usually he does a decent job
4/24/2009 4:55:22 PM
^way too much logic in that post for most jake haters
4/24/2009 5:07:15 PM
^ TrueJD hasn't been anywhere near as bad as some have described him over the years. In the two years prior to last year, Jake struggled primarily due to various injuries. Carolina had a lot of trouble running the ball in those years too. Besides, Jake has never been called an elite QB. He can't put a team on his back like, say, Peyton Manning, but then again he doesn't have to. John Fox's offense centers around a strong running game and smart QB play.Last year however it became clear that Delhomme has hit the twilight of his career. He's not making smart decisions anymore. I know the two years prior sucked too, but again... injuries and bad O-line play had a lot to do with it. This year the Panthers O was solid, but JD wasn't. I thought he'd finally get put out to pasture...... and I was wrong

hes no Crompton... and thats a good thing

jake delhomme's job is to throw it to steve smith.... i'm pretty sure it's in his contract somewhere.
4/24/2009 7:26:11 PM
He throws to Steve Smith better than Rodney Peete, Chris Weinke, Matt Moore, David Carr and Vinny Testaverde, fwiw
4/24/2009 7:33:52 PM
Jake also throws it better to Antrel Rolle, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Gerald Hayes, Ralph Brown, and Roderick Hood.
4/24/2009 8:41:39 PM
well played
4/24/2009 8:47:13 PM
^^ I see what you did there
4/24/2009 8:47:46 PM
I didn't realize Steve Smith is about to be 30.
