Haven't seen any threads on this, and i know its an old game.Apparently they are releasing a new server for their 10th anniversary and they are having a poll to decide which ruleset. Apparently they are considering one where your character starts at level 51 with 50 AA points and you go from there. Not sure how much i'd like this. Many people have been waiting for a new server ruleset to open up (people who originally played but not anymore).http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/posts/list.m?topic_id=150189Just wondering if there were any old players out there?

i played from around release time for 2 years. quit slightly before luclin. that said, a decade later i have more important things to do and could never commit that amount of time again.

^I agree. I never got into EQ bad, though I had some friends with SERIOUS EQ addictions, though I did play a little WOW. But I was big into other games, and now I can't find time to sit down for 5 minutes and play anything at all!

I played for about 3 years in the early days... left just after Planes of Power expansion came out (about when I got into the SWG beta). EQ is still one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. It is impossible to replicate that experience simply because of the advances in everything else (everything is now fully mapped, complete item and beast databases, full quest walkthroughs everywhere, people with no attention spans, lost art of pick-up groups, etc.)
4/23/2009 4:20:31 PM
I had a roommate who was an addict.destroyed his life over it.This is when I started looking down on "gamers"]]
4/23/2009 4:26:13 PM
yeah my suitemates were into it pretty hardcore when it came out.I made sure to let them know how big of losers they were.
4/23/2009 4:47:49 PM
I played it in middle school/early in high school. EQ really was one of the best games I have ever played. It was the first massive online game I had played other then diablo 2 and it was so freaking fun. I played a little bit in college when the new servers came out that started from scratch (can't remember what they were called) but the servers advanced too fast for me and I didnt want to sink that time in it. Great game though.
4/23/2009 6:36:48 PM
I played that game for the first time in the 8th grade...my brother and I shared a subscription for a few years, but I never got super into it. Nevertheless, it remains one of my favorite gaming experiences because it was such a new concept to me at the time.I'm sure by this point it's nothing like it originally was.
4/23/2009 6:37:33 PM
I played it from launch until about 1 month into the first expansion. I was in middle school and had no idea what the hell I was getting into. The whole idea that you had to learn/know your shit (no real guides or maps) is completely lost on this generation of MMO players.Anyone here play on Rallos Zek? That shit was as close to UO (in terms of fucked up PvP) as you could get. Loved every minute of it, though. Hunting down known PKs for an entire afternoon can't be replicated.

I played for about 5 years, from soon after kunark all the way until near the end of planes of power. We are all hoping that the new server is going to be another progression style server(each expansion is unlocked in order when you kill the end bosses of the previous expansion), except this time we are hoping for something like 3 month time locks so that it doesn't become a race to unlock expansions between a small group of hardcore players and that we can all enjoy playing the old expansions for a longer period of time. I plan on playing, but not if its going to be anything other than progression.

My name is Chief and I was a EQholic. All I remember is how much time I wasted pulling all-nighters 'camping' items with my buddies and guilds over weekends. God it feels so sad to look on now, but damn were some of those times were fun. It wasn't a bad alternative for growing up out in the boonies, the woods can get boring sometimes. I probably would do it all over again. Long-ass boat rides when your ass was broke or didn't have guild buddies. Fucking with the Freeport guards. Random creatures getting trained unexpectedly and raping you with 5 hits, leaving you to die in the middle of a plane.Getting rez'd. Serious business. [Edited on April 23, 2009 at 10:36 PM. this thread has become a confessional
4/23/2009 10:55:20 PM
fucking monk epic camp in guk or where ever it was. god.
4/23/2009 11:17:47 PM
24 hours in najena getting j boots for me. some serious prekunark awesomage
4/24/2009 12:22:31 AM
4/24/2009 12:30:49 AM
they had maps and shit, even when i played. prob around kunark the stuff was readily available, but it wasnt nearly as easy to navigate. lotta /loc'ing about to find what you needed. def no roads (or much of any waypoints) to help out.helped if you had gaydar too.i played on bertox.
4/24/2009 12:34:01 AM
EQMaps had graph paper scans of maps that were drawn using /loc'ed coordinates. They were the most accurate maps for a few years. There was just something about the unknown nature of the landscape... shouts about Quillimane in NK (fucking bastards ks'ing from mages), the hell that was Guk, and heaven forbid you were around during corpse rot. I really, really miss it.
4/24/2009 12:43:03 AM
Anyone play pvp back when you could loot items? I had to have two sets of armor, depending on what i was doing/where I was going.I was a trader in the game. I had a full set of rubicite at level 13. This was before the AH
4/24/2009 3:05:41 AM
4/24/2009 5:33:03 AM
Yeah I started the game at about the same time as Zel, but he outleveled me fast due to my obsession with EC. I spent FOREVER there trading and selling things. Mostly because I wanted to get gnome goggles. I had the second pair on the server. I had a pimped out gnome warrior by the time he was like level 10.
4/24/2009 6:13:56 AM
I honestly don't get the guilt over people who used to play EQ. I played in college and it was a damn cheap entertainment budget to spend 10 bucks a month and not spend all my money on going out and clubs and shit.I'm now happily married, have a daughter turning 1 next month, a nice salary, and I'll probably play some WoW tonight after the baby and the wife go to sleep.I fucking loved my enchanter in EQ. I could control 20 mobs and single-handedly save an entire raid. I wish I had that kind of power in WoW. People loved me in EQ. As soon as I log on I'd get invites to (at the time the planes were the end-game) Hate and Fear from other guilds. It was sweet having a reputation on the server.
4/24/2009 9:20:49 AM
played too much, but it was a fun game. nothing quite like waiting 3 hours to find a group too
4/24/2009 9:28:14 AM
4/24/2009 9:45:29 AM
i was in clan of shadows as well, who was your character? I was a rogue named Ruyen. God I miss playing with Mack such an awesome asshole of a guild leader haha.
4/24/2009 11:13:49 AM
I had a monk named Firenze. I was with them for a few months during summer/fall 04 when they were doing a bunch of PoP backflagging & GoD stuff. Mack would always end up training our raids somehow lol, but they were all a trip. Lunaa, iceblayde, senan, etc.
4/24/2009 12:18:23 PM
nothing like necroing it up. I'd never do it again but it was fun. Nothing like having your guild asked by another guild to come in and help them get their corpses out of PoF because they went in to help a 3rd guild get there's out and somehow they all ended up in a shit storm. 10 plat says he DTs a gnome 1st
4/24/2009 3:54:40 PM
Anyone remember what the plane of fear looked like before the level cap? It was just a sea of level 1 corpses as far as the eye could sea.
4/24/2009 4:30:08 PM
how about something different and interesting...one wordpermadeathyou want a new fanbasemake a hardcore permadeath serverI would start playing TODAY if they did that
4/24/2009 4:44:19 PM
lol bout corpse rot. good times. gave you some real fear and you got to see begging at the highest degree.
4/24/2009 5:01:01 PM
lol yea, begging necromancers to summon corpses or begging friends to help rebreak fear was always pretty funny. God wow is such a pussy game haha.
4/24/2009 7:00:02 PM
Um, for anyone who seems interested in this game.Do not play this under any circumstances. You can get just as much enjoyment out of other MMORPG's without selling your soul with the amount of time you will have to spend.
4/24/2009 7:13:57 PM
EQ was just by far the most revolutionary game. It was such an amazing game to play, so much to explore, so much to see. And it wasnt like you could just get on the internet and find a walkthrough or good map to anything, that was part of what made it awesome. Quests were not user friendly and it was a legit hard game. WOW has made mmorpgs too easy. I tried EQ2 for a little while, with the exception of the camp for my purple robe it was a pretty meh game. EQ is still the best.
4/24/2009 7:22:28 PM
How many game play days did it take you to get from 51-60 the first time?Matter of fact, how many game days do you have?
4/24/2009 7:23:33 PM
i think i had about 150 game days between my characters. not that insane by any means, but pretty rediculous since i played for a little over 2 years (about 5 months of which was a break / barely getting on).
4/24/2009 7:29:24 PM
all the EQ guys at work have quit and now play Eve
4/24/2009 7:30:07 PM
lulz.they went from a game that requires all your time level to a game that requires all your time to keep your corporation and alliance profitable and aliveeve is so crazy cut throat. If I had to give all my time to a game, eve would be it.

a jboots quest. cute.

I remember camping the Ancient Cyclops in Ocean of Tears back in the day, screw South Ro.
4/25/2009 2:21:12 PM
i just went an was browsing EQATLAS for nostalgia's sake. it is funny that i never went to Odus in the entire time i played except to via teleportation for some spells.funny how many zones from launch -> velious i had never even been in or only had stepped in briefly as well. i never maxed out because i spent so much time trading and dicking around with the social aspects. got a decent feel for the game and camping, just not endgame raids (did a few but nothing major) and i can live with that. 2 things about EQ on that front...1. you could spend an ASSLOAD of time without even touching endgame content (like i did). i played wow the same way and maxed out in a month. nothing to do besides endgame at that point since the regular instance drops werent insanely better than your normal gear.2. you actually were afraid playing that game. hell from lvl 1 through lvl 60 i never once felt settled. hell you could die in a mid lvl zone from a bad train if you weren't careful. traveling took time, finding groups took time, and you had to be on your A-game. thats why i liked it. [Edited on April 25, 2009 at 2:31 PM. Reason : .]
4/25/2009 2:27:42 PM
lol, I spent quite a bit of time in the whole for people's epics and what not.
4/25/2009 2:29:26 PM
i might have gone to the hole once now that i think about it, but it musta been brief if i did (i dindt help with a ton of epics tho)
4/25/2009 2:32:12 PM
I spent a TON of time in the hole working on my SK epic. It was fun making the dive down. For whatever reason some people would die and some wouldnt and we never could figure out what caused it. Or the ridiculous attempts to get through the water to get in if you werent shrunk. What fun!
4/25/2009 3:31:09 PM
this is the thread of sadness
4/25/2009 3:38:52 PM
^^ heh good times with shrink. i got stuck inside the temple of solusek ro. i got in by doing a little sit/stand/crouch dance, but couldnt manage to do it on the way out. the GM's basically told me "tough shit, get someone to shrink you."
4/25/2009 5:21:37 PM
I think the biggest draw of EQ was the community interaction. I saw very little of this in WoW (since there were a LOT more young people in WoW being immature). I actually made friends in-game that i would talk to all the time. I actually felt close to guildies i had played with for years. Spending so much time together on things kinda brought everyone closer and just made the overall playing experience so much more enjoyable.
4/25/2009 6:36:54 PM
i agree and i think the game being more hardcore encouraged that. even at low levels, you depended heavily on an entire group to work together. you knew who you liked and who you didnt. knowing people made things easier.
4/25/2009 7:25:14 PM
soloing is a million times easier in WOW...not every class could do it effectively in EQ.[Edited on April 25, 2009 at 10:27 PM. Reason : .]
4/25/2009 10:27:18 PM
EQ forced you to group.Making it hard is one thing.Making you spend the absurd amount of time is completely different. It just isnt necessary. But I will admit, the skill level in EQ is >>>> WoW[Edited on April 25, 2009 at 11:15 PM. Reason : dfb]
4/25/2009 11:15:39 PM
when getting 1/25th of a level was a cause for celebration, you know you got a good game on your hand. blue ding FTW.but seriously, the absurd amount of time was important. i would argue the actual mobs and whatnot weren't any harder than anything in WOW (til endgame), but the mechanics of coordinating the group, being unable to solo, severe death penalties, etc made it a better game which had a feeling of real accomplishment.
