i found the thread title and initial post very informative.

For people that don't want to click through, there is legislation in the US House that may lift the restrictions facing US citizens wanting to travel to Cuba.

Quote :
"The United States and Cuba have been separated by a wide ideological gulf since Fidel Castro's 1959 Revolution.

For most of that time, Americans have been prohibited by their own laws from traveling to the communist-led Caribbean island under a 47-year-old U.S. trade embargo.

But that may change. Legislation to free travel by Americans to Cuba is pending in the U.S. Congress, and backers expect it could be approved in what they see as a developing thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations under U.S. President Barack Obama."

I would also like to visit Cuba one day. I want to see if its as awesome as Michael Moore says it is. Of course, can't one already visit Cuba via Mexico? Maybe not. Either way, I think most people would agree that trade and travel restrictions on Cuba are out dated. Especially with Castro out of the picture. This will be a welcome change for all parties.

Why is there still an embargo against Cuba again? I think it's pretty clear that we won the cold war, we are not in danger from "communist aggression", and cuban cigars are fucking sweet. Somebody, please help me understand.

I think the cuban American population wants to punish Cuba, unaware that the greatest punishment would be to eliminate the embargo and destabilize the country.

For the most part, I think the Cuban-American population was against the latest round of sanctions that were imposed by the previous administration. These were the stricter ones that tightened communications with and curbed remittances between Cuban-Americans and their brethren on the island.
