So I moved to Harnett County about a year and a half ago. I never updated my drivers license and it still has my Wake County address. I recently got a letter for jury duty at my parents house in Wake County, am I going to still be required to go? I've tried calling the clerks office and leaving a message but I haven't received a call back.

fwiw, you might want to get the addy changed, or you can get like a 60 dollar buck ticket[Edited on April 13, 2009 at 12:27 PM. Reason : supposed to get it changed after 60 days, so if you get a dick cop they could give u a ticket]

are you a student? if so, you can usually get out of duty if you say you have class.[Edited on April 13, 2009 at 12:30 PM. Reason : but you have to somehow notify the court]

I'm a student, but I don't have class on thursday which is when duty starts. I'm assuming they would want proof. I'm not as concerned with going, if I have to go thats fine (though I would rather not if I have the option). What I'm more concerned with is as ^^ said, I don't want to end up getting in legal trouble because of it. I guess I'll be heading to the dmv tomorrow to get my address changed. I just want to figure out what I should do, whether its contact the clerk or just show up and tell them then.

i would at least go get a new license with the updated address to help your story - otherwise either they have no reason to believe you or should just give you a ticket as mentioned prior

nah. i've gotten out of it before, i basically sent in some form that said "i'm a student and i have class" and that was it. i can't confirm that it will work the same for you. but the fact that you're a student and don't go to school in harnett county should be enough to get you out of it on its own.

my wife had the same situation. we had recently moved and she hadn't updated her license yet and got called for jury duty. She just had to send a letter and some proof of residence for a different county (we sent our city of durham utility bill). call the number on the jury letter. they'll tell you what to do.

^ I did the same... If I updated my license everytime I moved, I would have to update it every year.. Screw that shit... I just told Johnston County to kiss my ass because my parents lived in JoCo and I was going to school in Wake County. Worked fine for me... I think there is a spot on the form where you can write why you can't attend jury duty... But i would confirm that far in advance to make sure they will take that as an excuse... Otherwise just tell them you're racist, hate all men or women and say anyone not a Jew should fry in the electric chair...

^^Pretty much exactly what happened with my wife, but her license was updated with a new address. She just photocopied her up to date license and sent it with the letter. IIRC the letter she got had the address listed to mail in an explanation for why you couldn't make it (this was Forsyth county though).[Edited on April 13, 2009 at 12:51 PM. Reason : ]

^ can you not just change your address in NC without getting a new license?in california, i can update my address online through the DMV website but am not required to get a new license until my current one expires (i think they tell you to carry around a piece of paper with your new address with your license)

^no you cant. they require you to get a new card/license when you change your address. But if you have your old one, its pretty easy, just tell them that and they will have you out of there in 5 minutes.

You can even update your address online and they'll mail you the new license.

You don't even have to go to the DMV to get a new license with a new address:
