My brother is getting married next weekend.

I have to propose a toast...any good stories or ideas? I can't decide if I want to do something serious, or more tongue-in-cheek...leaning more towards the latter because I think that is what everyone else is doing. I know it would greatly help to know the person personally, but I was hoping people could share experiences, what they talked about, etc...

Think of a funny story from your/their past. Segway to a heartfelt wish of good things to come. Have one(1) stiff drink before you deliver it.

unless everyone there knows the stories behind the jokes you plan to tell, don't tell them. no one will have a clue and you'll bomb. crickets. tumbleweeds blowin across the stage and shit.

the wedding/toast/reception isn't about you and your comedy taking the spotlight. it's fine to have a couple little jokes in there, but overall your toast should be genuine.

My sisters did a toast at my wedding. They started with a funny story about meeting my husband and how he fit in really well with my family. Then they went on to talk a bit about me. It was nice to include my husband though. Our best man just talked about my husband and said nothing about me which was kind of disappointing. So try to include the bride as well if you can.

and keep it short. No one likes a long winded toast and it keeps it easier for you to remember and get it over with.

You always start a toast with something funny, it warms everyone up to the idea of having to listen to your damn toast.

Ask yourself this,

are you generally an engaging public speaker, considered funny, etc.? If so, then go with something lighthearted.

If you're like me, and a terrible public speaker, go short, sweet, and heartfelt.
