(the old thread was way old).

I have a 2000 Accord and I've been having this problem for about ~2 weeks (minus the cruise control problem). At first, the brake light was just not working (even though my step-dad replaced it?) So now I've just been having to press the brake pedal alot before I'm finally able to switch into gear. But today, no matter how much I tried, it would NOT switch into gear, so I said fuck it and got a ride to the Canes game.

I've Googled this shit and what not, but HALP? Is it just a problem with the switch? Buy a new one?

There's a tiny plastic tab to the right of your shifter. Pop that piece out and stick your key in the hole, you'll feel a button in there, push down and hold it, keep holding it and move the shifter to neutral. Start the car and go. You'll need to replace the brake switch to actually fix the problem, but you can do this until then.
I want to say the brake switch is ~30-40 bucks. When you order it make sure to tell them you have cruise control. There are separate switches for CC and non CC cars and if you get the non CC switch your CC won't work. If you need, I can install it for a reasonable price.

[Edited on March 26, 2009 at 1:38 AM. Reason : Actually, your brake lights probably aren't working either, so be careful if you do drive it.]

^ what i was bout to say, you can manually release the shifter, but its still not safe to be driving around with your brake lights out

It is an easy fix, just a pain in the ass to contort your body so that you can see what you're doing.
