Ive been watching video files with the mkv extension for about a year. I keep all of them on a drive other than my primary/C drive, always have.
I turned that computer off for a few weeks and when I cranked it back up, it would no longer play .mkv files that resided on that drive. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the matroska/VLC player packages, but the problem remains.

all other media file formats play perfectly

I can actually copy the files from the drive in question to a different drive (ANY other drive) and the files play perfectly fine. THe drive is healthy according to it's smart data and its been defragged regularly and ive run checkdisk to no avail.

what is the meaning of this outrage?

welcome to a super shitty open source format that is only used for pirated content.

Why don't you just call their support center.... oh. wait. nevermind.

the md5 remains the same no matter

I'd bet Windows effed something up more than instability in mkv format.

Why? The scene has picked a number of awful retarded delivery formats in the past, why would this be any different?

Dawg, take a chill pill. It was half in jest, I wouldn't have even posted if it weren't for quagmire02's awsome lead-in, and then, to my suprise, the awesome leadout by ScHpEnXeL

I had this problem with .mov files a long while ago. I knew something was funky when I could play clips off shared network drives, but not off my own hard drive Turned out it was caused by some shitty nVidia IDE drivers I had installed. Not sure if that's your problem, but there it is. Did you update your IDE drivers recently?

MKV is only shit because basically the only device that will play it is a PC. Luckily, there are enough apps out there that can remux the encapsulated video and audio streams into something your hardware can recognize that it really isn't an issue. MKV2VOB is especially awesome if you own a PS3.

well it turned out that if the one file that DID play was in the same folder as those that wouldn't, it caused the problem. i moved that one file out and converted it to a different format and the problem went away.

that still doesnt explain much though. im going to look at my drive attributes again

If memory serves, asf was only ever used by failgroups and couriers like SmR, who pushed out shitty VCD reencodes to 56k IRC peons.

indeed - you can't consider re-encodes as the scene -SmR/MRG/Empire/etc they were all closer to the scene than the regular nowaday torrent downloader but still not considered in the scene by any stretch of the imagination

scene kids are pretty much dumb as heck. Is there actually a reason for not using ASF(wmv/wma)?

I assure you that the 'dumb scene kids' aren't the ones that propose the rules and format standards.

^^A lot of people with WAY too much time on their hands, and a complete disconnect with reality.

The scene draws from the same crowd that gets sucked into MMO's and other fantasy escapes. People with pretty dead-end jobs/careers, without a whole lot of ambition in life who want to find something they can be important in doing. For the college kids, I think it's more about boredom and fascination with technology and finding acceptance in groups. But even for younger kids, it's all about finding respect and importance because it isn't coming from their real life circumstances.

^which one were you?

I could tell my friends but they think I've lost it anyway
That this is just a passing phase
And the running will wither down
To the pace I'm supposed to go
In the lines I'm supposed to know
I haven't yet figured out
