If I remove the x clamps on my 360 and replace the fan with a better one do you think I'll ever have problems with the system again? Are all problems associated with x clamps and overheating?

I was thinking I might just replace the fan until the warranty was up since its easy to put the old one back on and then remove the x clamps later but if this is a foolproof solution to 360 problems I might as well do it now.

I read up on the x clamp fix and was wondering a few things.

1. Is it necessary or better to drill holes at the bottom of the case for the M5 screws?
2. In some tutorials they superglue small pieces of credit card between the heatsinks and motherboard, is that necessary or is it better?
3. Do I need to cook my system if its already working because they say the reason they do this is for the gpu sauters to get back into place but I just had my system repaired for 3 rrod so I'm assuming its set in there good.

no one knows. depends on how skilled you are and if you F anything up in the process then it won't work.

if it aint broke, don't fix it

The process doesn't seem too difficult but I don't have a drill and don't know if its necessary to drill holes. The tutorials are all a little different too.

Anyone know if my system will last longer doing this http://copronymous.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fix-for-the-3rlod.pdf or if I leave it as is?

My warranty expires in June so I just want to make it last as long as possible.

My friend has done the x-clamp fix to four 360's in the past three months. Three of those have already red ringed again.

Did they apply the x clamp fix on broken consoles or were the consoles working before they did it?

As someone who has done the "X-Clamp Fix" something like 10 times, let me say:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

To answer your specific questions:

Quote :
"1. Is it necessary or better to drill holes at the bottom of the case for the M5 screws?
2. In some tutorials they superglue small pieces of credit card between the heatsinks and motherboard, is that necessary or is it better?
3. Do I need to cook my system if its already working because they say the reason they do this is for the gpu sauters to get back into place but I just had my system repaired for 3 rrod so I'm assuming its set in there good."

1) Yes
2) There are all sorts of different things tutorials suggest. Sometimes credit cards, sometimes 3 high stacks of pennies, etc. It's supposed to help, but how much it does I can't say concretely.
3) I highly advise against doing anything to a working system.

Yea, he did the fix to already busted boxes. I wouldn't touch the inside of a working box.

Anyone know which fan is the best and quietest to put in the xbox? If I need to send it back I could always open it back up and reinstall the original fan so this isn't such a warranty voiding issue.
They also sell a Nyko fan that attaches to the outside of the Xbox, is it any good or should I just replace the fan inside or both?

Isn't the warranty voided the instant you open the box?

yea but if you take off the microsoft sticker with a blow dryer so it doesn't mess up then you can open it freely and put it back on whenever you have to send it in.

I'd use a nice low db internal fan, even a 120mm if it'll fit. 360's are loud as fuck

I was thinking of buying a talismoon whisper which is powerful and quiet and fits into the area where the older fan goes. Anyone know if they make any other fans that fit in that area?

I don't know why you say if it aint broke don't fix it.
I never played the system for over 4 hours a day and kept it in perfect condition. Because of the design of the system its bound to mess up again.

Because the fix isn't 100% effective, so it's not like you're being pre-emptive about solving the problem.

Well xbox sent me back the same system and the only thing they switched out was the disc drive

Now I have a lite-on so I had to buy a connectivity kit and probe to flash it, I also messed up the sticker on the dvd drive so my warranty is void. Since its void I did the x-clamp fix with washers on the top of the motherboard only and credit card pieces between the heatsinks and the piece of motherboard the chips sit on. I also ordered a talismoon whisper.

I didn't tighten the case to motherboard screws that tight or the ones on the heatsink too tight so I hope these fixes keep the system running. Since the warranty was void I didn't want to risk it breaking and only getting 30-40$ on eBay.

"If you've got the original firmware key for your disc drive and are capable of opening your own case he charges $45 for the firmware updates. I'm waiting to hear back on the pricing situation for the fan power source mod, my guess is around $30, which is a pretty solid deal considering that's about the cost of an aftermarket fan and his method won't endanger your DVD drive. MS can actually detect when other devices are diverting from the power source of the drive when users are playing through xbox live. The beauty of the 12V system is that its powered independently of any of the other hardware components."

The aftermarket fans go in the same power port as the original fan and if you do the fan mod it will stay on 12V just like an aftermarket fan. Why the fuck would it endanger my dvd drive? BTW what a great deal!!

You stupid fucking cunt, do I look like an idiot to you or something, go rip off a noob you fucking piece of shit.

diverting power from the DVD drive shortens the life of the drive.

and for the record, you poor stupid fuck, I was giving you the prices of the person that does my mods, you don't like them, go elsewhere, it's that simple.

WTF, nice adapter, too bad it doesn't work that way. The Talismoon Whisper comes with a plug that goes into the same power source the original fan goes into. Those deals are a rip off anyways.

Yeah, what a rip off they are, fans that directly cool the GPU and CPU... Clearly the LEDs in the Talismoon fans make all the difference in the world

I just updated firmware to 1.51 and now I have audio and can hear the menu move, but there's no video. Any ideas?

Not sure maybe you have you're video cable plugged in wrong or it may be on tv instead of hd or the other way around. Those blue's and greens look alike.

If you sold one you fixed and modded to a buddy of yours, what would you set the price at and what kind of guarantee or stipulations would you make?

Well I don't know how to fix the RROD issue and from what I hear the x-clamp fix is very temporary for RROD. I don't really know about flashing though because some drives are a lot harder to flash then others (This lite-on I'm flashing is being very annoying). The x-clamp fix is pretty easy though and I'd only charge 20-25 to do that (plus 10 for arctic silver 5, screws, and washers).

I don't know about the system, I'm sure they are cheap on eBay but most people would probably prefer a newer falcon or jasper motherboard.

10 for artic silver? my whole tube was like 5 dollars and i've had it for almost two years (2 PC's and now this xbox) how much are you using?

The arctic silver 5 (cost more than arctic silver) was $6.50 and the 8 screws and 16 washers came to around $5. I do still have a little less than half of the AC5 left though.

yeah, I misread that as 10 for grease and 5 for screws/washers.

I have artic silver 5 but holy shit did it jump in price.

On an unrelated note, almost finished with box #2.

-Disc drive flashed w/ iExtreme 1.51
-Stock fans soldered to 12V power souce
-XCM Core Cooler V2 soldered to 12V power source
-Vent cut in right side of cage to increase cool aire pulled in by ^
-Case paint with several coats of Krylon Fusion and protected by clearcoat

I'm planning to:
-Add a plexiglass window to the DVD drive
-Paint the wind tunnel
-swap the LEDs around the buttons with blue ones.
-Add a blue LED bar to the left corner.

^^Yeah that actually looks pretty good. Paint looks a little thick/bumpy though. Could use some wet sanding + polish the next time you have it apart. I think the window in the dvd drive will make it look pretty sweet

I'm definitely still experimenting w/ different types of paints. The first one I made ate the dick cookie, probably because I dry them in an enclosed area outside and it was way too cold so the paint cracked. My homeboy who's into model airplanes has a little painting area setup indoors so that helped a lot (though this time of year, I guess it wouldn't matter.) I also learned that it's better to attach the window w/ a hot glue gun than an industrial strength super glue, so the window can be replaced in the event that it gets scratched or cracked. I need to figure out how to paint the power button without painting over the LED, I've seen it done on other cases, just haven't been able to figure it out for myself.
