Some dude in an office in Durham set up a camera to record all the accidents involving a low clearance bridge and large trucks. Hilarity ensues.http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/4766966/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4KP8gR9zcc

apparently this is a compilation of the 8 crashes that have happened in the past year. I saw this on the news. Some of the videos have little tags that show the name of the intersection.http://www.youtube.com/user/yovo68[Edited on March 18, 2009 at 8:59 PM. Reason : link]

Sardines. But seriously that bridge has it out for those do it yourself moving trucks. looked like a couple of trucks didnt even stop. I liked how one of the last ones it picked it up off the front wheels if you watch close.

i gots dat convertible box truck

Here's a link to the googlemaps street view for that intersection. You can see they actually put a steel "clothesline" in front of the bridge so trucks hit that first instead of the bridge. And there's a lot of warning about the height.http://tinyurl.com/c8kt6fHere's a better view of the clothesline, from a different angle.http://tinyurl.com/cj59fu[Edited on March 18, 2009 at 9:15 PM. Backhoes and bucket trucks are better.

^not the damn bridge's fault that people can't read...But yeah I've been under that bridge a number of times, if I saw that I would probably LOLLERCOASTERPersonally, I think these signs would be the more effective:

^^Depending on the speed of the trains that travel over the tracks, they may need to raise a lot of earth over a long stretch to alleviate the rise and fall angles. The tracks would also have to be cut for a long time, and I believe that alone would cost $texas.

dredge the road a foot deeper?
3/19/2009 4:28:41 AM
^ cant really do that (have to keep the road level with that intersection right before it)^^ exactly, the company that owns the bridge is probably fine just spending a few thousand on that overhead steel beam that sits right before it versus millions to raise it.Oh, here are some 'almost' clips from the same guy, same bridge...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKEzIfPuHwU&feature=channel[Edited on March 19, 2009 at 10:57 AM. Saw this a week or more ago. Also didn't know it was in Durham. The rental trucks, that's understandable. Normal people, used to driving cars. For any of those that are commercial, that's just their own damn fault.^Carve out the entire intersection and lower it. [Edited on March 19, 2009 at 10:58 AM. Reason : 89]

It's amazing the bridge has held up that well. Just seems like it is asking to collapse one day and people will blame the DOT when it does.

3/19/2009 11:00:42 AM
^it hits a sacrificial metal beam first so the bridge doesn't get damaged.^^ that still would cost $texas, disrupt traffic, not to mention all the utilities below ground, this also isn't the only sub-12' bridge in Durham.
3/19/2009 11:02:56 AM
since when do we watch our spending? your fourth point is valid. [Edited on March 19, 2009 at 11:04 AM. Reason : wee]
3/19/2009 11:03:49 AM
^haha fair point there too... I still think you would save alot of headache and dollars by just having a big "if you hit this sign you will hit that bridge" 200 feet before the bridge. You can't miss the sound of swinging sheet metal striking your truck (and if your still stupid enough to keep going after that, well you deserve what you get)
3/19/2009 11:09:07 AM
Or a billboard next to it with an image from the video of a shredded truck and a giant arrow pointing towards the "opening".
