My apartment mate's girlfriend decided she wanted a puppy, but since she lives in the dorms it is living here. He told me it was going to be a small breed, and would be in a crate during the night and when he isn't home.

I came back tonight/this morning after a trip and walk in to find a jack-russell terrier in a relatively small crate. I am an avid dog lover, my family has been dog owners three generations back, and I know the right way and wrong way to deal with certain breeds. And seeing this almost made me fly off the hinges.

First of all, the crate is in the living room, not his bedroom (like he promised me it would be), and the dog hasn't stopped barking since I got in. I played with him from outside the crate for a little bit, and he really enjoyed it, but I need to get to bed and I can't. He's running around inside the cage like crazy, even attempting to dig himself out.

This is not a dog that should be in a crate. It needs room to move around, and our apartment isn't big enough for that. If he had gotten a lap dog, it would have been a different story. But a jack-russell terrier?

The dog looks so depressed in his cage and I want to let him out but its not my place to do so. There is no way this animal can be happy living here. Either he needs to bring the dog back to the shelter or I'm calling it in.

As an avid dog lover, I would have hoped that you realized that someone who lives in a dorm and just "wants a puppy" anyway probably isn't the person who will be very conscientious of a dogs needs. She seems more concerned with her own wants.

a new puppy doesnt like being in the crate!?!?!? call the pound! it is one thing if he never gets any exercise, but thats something you can talk to your roommate about instead of threatening to call the shelter the first day you are back.

try not letting your emotions fuck with other people animals and just talk to him like a normal human being.

Crate training a puppy is hard, and no one likes hearing their dog whine, so don't just assume it's easy on him. If you're concerned, sit down and talk to him. Ask him what his methods are for crate training, and tell him you don't want to interfere with that. It's important that you know what the boundaries are as well. If you take the dog out of the crate every time he whines you could really screw with his training.

If you're worried about the dog being in the living room, that is a legitimate concern, definitely confront your roommate about that. But for goodness sake, don't call the shelter, or assume that because he's crate training a jack russell he needs to take it back.

so he didn't lie to you. jack russels are small and it is in a crate.

location of the crate is something that can be easily fixed by asking him to move it, but likely wont change any barking/whining. crating can take a bit.

you do realize the crate is supposed to be about the size of the dog right? you don't get a great dane cage and shove a chiuaua in there or they just shit in there until they are potty trained (which would be real humane right).

dogs dont just dance around all day while you are at work, they sleep. he doesn't need a huge cage to sleep all day.

I think the point the poster is trying to make is that Jack Russells are insane at the best of times, and planning to keep one in a crate for most of its life is going to really make it go batshit, these dogs need a ton of exercise and mental stimulation.

Bdmazur is an idiot. I am his roommate. He comes in at 4am in the morning and the dog is in a crate? omg wow....I'm sleeping and he must be crated because I cannot watch him. If mazur would have been here at all during the day he would have realized that the puppy was out the entire day and we actually took him out to petsmart and friend's places. It's also funny how he tried to tell me the crate was to big. It's a medium crate actually too large for the puppy. But according to the expert Ben it is way to small. He also gave me advice to let him chew on people and let him know how hard to do so, but any book/video/trainer says to stop him from chewing on people as puppy. So for an avid dog lover he knows very little about dogs. I would LOVE for him to call the shelter, "Hi the dog is crated at 4am and its whining when I came in", the response they would give him would be absolutely hilarious.
Read a book, watch a dvd on puppies, or talk to a trainer before you start running your mouth about shit that you really have no clue on what you are talking about.

My family currently has 2 Jack-Russells. I hate when people try to say they are annoying just because they have a lot of energy. My mom keeps hers in a crate on long trips and then lets it out and she is fine. The dog is playful and likes to be up on you, but if you tell it to go get in its bed, it will listen. Never yelps either.

When we get the smaller crate today it will be beside my bed. If he would have arrived back at a decent hour It would have been in the room. I just figured he wasn't coming back and left it out there for the night. But, I don't have to promise anything really since I own the place and generously rent a room to him.

why do you assume that "lap dogs" need less room to move than a Jack Russel? Besides the crate is supposed to only be big enough for the dog to lay down comfortably. If not, he can still shit on one end and sit on the other. A (normal) dog is not going to shit in the same place he sleeps, so therefore the crate is supposed to be small.

I guess the other main question no one has answered is: why are you keeping your girlfriend's dog at your apartment in the first place? She shouldn't have decided to get one until she's at least in her own place. If it's really your dog, I suppose that's fine, but it's not going to bond with her if you're taking care of it.

Yeah, keeping your girlfriends dog is dumb. If you wanted a dog, you should have gotten one. But when she dumps you, she'll just either: get you to take the dog, give it back to the shelter, make her parents take care of it, or have her next boyfriend take care of it.... ie: making it someone else's responsibility. She should have thought about that kind of thing before. Having a pet is more than just taking care of it when its convenient for you - but I'm sure those DVD's and books taught you all about that, and it was still a wonderful idea!!1

Seems like roommate A is not upset about the puppy so much as he is upset about the living situation in general.

Probably one of those "roommate's girlfriend is taking over our space, we never spend any time together, you don't do the dishes"

and on and on and he is upset about that instead....and hey, I understand it because I had a roommate situation back in the day where she just generally sucked as a roommate and I got mad at her over little things and blew up over her not doing the dishes when it went so much deeper than that.
