I am currently booking flight/hotel for NYC for this summer. I want to stay somewhere relatively in the middle of everything for tourist purposes (going with my family who has never been). I am looking at the Holiday Inn in Times Square but it worries me that it will be too busy and noisy for my parent's liking. Any suggestions? I am planning on taking them all over Manhatten for the week and doing a lot of sight seeing.

What's the budget?

My parents stay in the Westin just off Times Square by Port Authority, and they would definitely be bothered by noise. That hotel is super expensive though.

right next to the Westin is Hotel Carter, which claims to have rooms for like $65 a night or something. It doesn't look so nice though

Hotel Carter is pretty nasty. I think it was voted the worst hotel in the country.

someone found a dead body under one of the beds a few months ago and it was used to house homeless families during the 80's

however its cheap.

depends completely on your budget - but staying roughly anywhere inbetween 5th and 8th ave and 40th and 50th st. will be pretty busy - alternatively it might be a tad cheaper to stay near herald square and it'll still be pretty busy and it's just 1 stop away from times square

When I went to NYC in January I stayed at the New Yorker Hotel. It was pretty nice, but a little expensive for what you get. I think we split 140 a night four ways for it. It was within walking distance of pretty much everywhere I wanted to go (Times Square, Empire State Building, etc.) and there was a subway stop right at the corner that it is located. It is also located diagonally across the street from MSG.

The service was nice and the rooms were nice, if small compared to hotels in other cities. I think this size is pretty consistent for New York in general though.

It depends on what your budget is, really.

I work in Chelsea and there's a nice Holiday inn on 26th between 6th and 7th.

My vote is trying to stay somewhere closeish to 14th st or 34th st, those have express stops for most of the lines, and 14th st has a line going crosstown (L), so it's easy to get from east to west.

That being said, the subway is easy to use and doesn't take too long, so you should be good wherever you stay.

we stayed at holiday inn soho and it was perfect.....in china town, little italy & soho...and a subway stop was right there

it's nothing to learn the subway and take that all over...we did not miss out on ANYTHING...we walked, subway, bus tours, cab...stay wherever. you'll be fine.

When I went with the parents a few years ago, we stayed in the Holiday Inn on 57th street between 9th and 10th avenue. It was nice, and in a pretty good location--out of the way of the really heavy traffic, but near a subway station and not far from Carnegie Hall, Central Park, Columbus Circle. This was back in 2002, but I'd stay there again, or at least give it a look.

Was close to everything that I needed (was there on business & 3 blocks from the offices) & a great 'little' hotel.

That's where my wife and I stayed last time we went. It was a good location and the free coffee machine was awesome. It is a little trendy though. Also free champagne upon arrival.
