Dear reader. this is a rant. I invite your comment, really. However, there is a tasteless excess of caps use in this inital post because it is 633 in the morning, I've been up all night working, and I took a minute to peruse some car forums only to find out that idiots are still running very high fucking offices all over our damn country. My only excuse for my lack of eloquence in this post is that I lowered myself to the level of governance among our states.------What the hell is wrong with the voting public that every single governor in the nation is either totally crooked or woefully unsuited to hold office? --------http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2009/02/oregon-governor-looking-to-ban-aftermarket-parts.htmlall I know about the gov in question is his position with respect to this single topic, so maybe he isn't per-se an across-the-board idiot, but he certainly thinks that automotive modification of ANY kind is absolutely inversely related to safety and/or the environment. Where the fuck do people like this get these ideas?Nevermind that this guy's idea is so blindly overbroad as to effectively stomp out people who want to spend tens of thousands of dollars turning their mere 'ordinary' hybrids into plug-ins, along with people who want to increase grip, or steering response, or decrease weight.... I can just imagine a 5-second exchange with this fool after presenting him with such a realization... oh, that's not the sort of aftermarket you intended to rule out? Well that's not exactly in keeping with EQUAL FUCKING PROTECTION, THEN, IS IT?! DID YOU JUST ATTEMPT TO LEGISLATE YOUR PERSONAL FUCKING PREFERENCE?! DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200 FUCKING DOLLARS, I"LL NEED YOUR GODDAMN APOLOGY FOR YOUR HEINOUS ATTEMPT AT OVERREACHING THAT WOULD CAUSE VERY LITTLE IMPROVEMENT IN ANYTHING AT THE EXPENSE OF JOBS AND A VALUABLE PART OF AMERICAN EXPRESSION AND RAISON D'ETRE, NEVERMIND the negative effects upon... oh, what are they called again.... JOBS. FUCKING JOBS. ALL OVER THE DAMN COUNTRY WOULD BE NEGATIVELY AFFECTED BY YOUR LITTLE NARROW-MINDED "I'm an environmentalist today, but not really because I have no idea what repercussions are or whether my knee-jerk idea is at all correlated with the goal in mind and, even if it COULD be shown to be correctly tailored to accomplish the task intended, how to analyze whether its negative effects totally cancel out any measurable benfit to society!" watery-shit THAT YOU CALL A BILL.STEPS FOR YOU TO CORRECT YOUR EFFECT ON SOCIETY:1. RESIGN.2. PURCHASE GUN.3. DIG A 6 FOOT DEEP HOLE ON A SLIGHT HILL4. STAND at the uphill side of the hole.5. ELIMINATE YOUR CO2 footprint. optional step, if you'd like to kill two dumbshit birds with one stone/ bullet: send an invitation to wasilla, Alaska, inviting an S. P*lin to this "corrections" process, to stand in front of you and offer a second opinion so you can eliminate bias when you attempt to guess/ decide what color the barrel turns when you pull the "loud" switch in front of the handle.

so he wants to outlaw ricers? cool.oh and its illegal to modify your car in Germany too. As far as I'm concerned, Germany has their shit together better than anyone else when it comes to automotive anything.[Edited on February 11, 2009 at 1:24 PM. Reason : .]

It's not illegal to modify your car in Germany, but it does have to be well documented and approved. they don't want some redneck taking his ricer shitbox up to 150 mph on the autobahn.
2/11/2009 1:34:37 PM
^ yeah, I was gonna say... if modifying your car weren't allowed in germany, someone would definitely have to explain to me how in the hell mtm made that TT Bimoto road-legal...

^individuals versus corporations. big difference.
2/11/2009 3:50:32 PM
err...i thought I had put that in my post as well but I guess I didn't. Yes, you do need to go through a approval process on everything from tint to modifications.

I don't understand how they would enforce this. A lot of the aftermarket engine parts that people use on their cars are already technically illegal for street use, or quasi-legal. But the current enforcement model is with state emissions inspections and in some places (chiefly California and major urban areas) training of police officers to spot these illegal modifications. They would have to have a division of the state police go to every auto shop and inspect... they'd have to have people rummaging through people's mail. There'd be a ton of exceptions and loopholes for various types of cars such that special interests (rich old corvette owners) would get preferential treatment over say the guy building a drag car out of his 5.0 fox body. I just don't see how it could be enforced without spending a shit ton and establishing a war-on-drugs type of system.[Edited on February 11, 2009 at 10:37 PM. Reason : .]

Inspections are fucking THOROUGH, and shops are held accountable for the work they do. It's really not a big deal. The polizei can pretty much figure out if you have a fart can and big cam on your peugot that you better have some documentation.
2/11/2009 10:37:41 PM
Inspections are as thorough as the inspectors. It all depends on the locality.
2/11/2009 10:38:52 PM
They can go right ahead and make modifications illegal. Right after they give us the fucking autobahn.

Ricers would still exist. The bill does not address or restrict the following items:- Flame, JDM, chinese words, and assorted stickers.- Supra spoilers (since it's a stock part).- Carbon Fiber or parts that look like CF (since it's an "alternative that decreases greenhouse gas emissions").- Gray rattle-can primer (and any ridiculous paint for that matter).- Fake HID lights yo! (especially blue ones).- Single adults who wear their hats backwards and live with their parents.[Edited on February 12, 2009 at 9:55 AM. Reason : mo']

They don't even let you pump your own gas in Oregon.Pretty state, but it's all ass-backwards. Something like this passing would not be that much of a surprise.
