Where can you go to get a linux machine with Fortran on it to complete your outlab machines. I know there are some labs in Daniels. But arent these labs used for other classes. Is there any labs where it is open for any students (i.e. no classes in there) so you can finish your work in there. Thanks in advance.

You can use putty/xwin32 to run nedit. That's how I did mine from my laptop. There's some in the bottom of several dorms. I know there's some linux machines in the bottom floor of Sullivan.

The Daniels 24 hour lab has those machines. Just ask the that useless receptionist sitting there by the drink machines and she can point you in the right direction. Down the hall and take a left.

^Yeah, Daniels 226. There's one row of Windows machines in there, but all the rest should be linux.

Do your outlabs IN LAB. if you don't have time or your TA's don't know much more than you do, do them in another lab section.
after like the first 2 or 3 labs, the outlabs get pretty difficult (in the sense that your ta's probably don't explain everything required for them)

^Doesn't matter what instructor. You won't pay attention either way. Lab is worth 80% and class is 20%, and both have the same labs. Also if you skip class it's a point of your final grade.

lol the "class" part of fortran is completely useless. i hate that they keep forcing it on you.

actually, its ridiculous they keep forcing engineers to take fortran.... all my MAE teachers have said repeatedly "learn matlab, learn matlab, its whats used in industry today". i seriously don't know why they dont just teach us matlab instead.

I've heard from several ME profs that the reason fortran is still required is tied to AE. Dr. Tran told us that since NASA uses fortran, that's all AE wants to use (even though I think even NASA has changed or is changing), so the whole department does. He agreed that it's virtually useless for us.

I used to be civil and I took it before I switched to ME. It's the easiest 1 hr class I ever took. You don't really learn much matlab. Really need a 3 hr class to learn something.

fyi, I work for NASA and we use fortran all the time. There is a good deal of C and MATLAB used too. Fortran is what most of the simulation tools we use are programmed with. MATLAB is mostly used for processing and analysis. In fact one of the reasons I was hired was because of my extensive knowledge of fortran (I taught it for three years at NCSU).

In terms of the course, the lecture is useless. You'll learn everything from your lab TA. If you get stuck with a sucky lab TA, try to find a lab section with a good TA and just attend that lab. They won't mind. I had tons of students from other labs come to mine. If you get a cool lab TA they will really help you out, I promise.
