I am organizing a Battle of the Bands that will be the kickoff to a week-long event that will be one of the largest student run programs we've had here at State. Looking for any bands who may be interested, and we definitely want you if you're a student band. There will be some sort of incentive for winning the competition, although exactly what we're not sure of yet. The event will be March 22nd (Sunday night) from 8pm-Late. We are taking any and all bands who want to be a part of this. Send me a PM or email at pcvenema@ncsu.edu and we can talk.

Its going to be on Centennial Campus, part of the Centennial Campus Challenge. Out door show...I've gotta start calling around tomorrow and seeing what I can find for sound/light/stage techs.School sponsored, of course.^^I thought you didn't have a band?^We are looking for any local area businesses who want to sponsor some costs/services in exchange for advertising during the week. Ranging from banners to hand outs to call outs during the event, what ever we can do. We were thinking of advertising what ever specials or upcoming events those sponsors have.[Edited on February 3, 2009 at 12:44 AM. Reason : advertising]

I don't have any equipment or a band, but if you need a sound/stage tech, I'd love to help out for free.
2/5/2009 12:52:56 PM
good bands that arent in high school don't need to play for free.
2/5/2009 12:55:00 PM
^ I don't know if that was a response to me, but I'm not offering to perform. I offered to help with sound/stage tech for free.
2/5/2009 1:35:17 PM

2/9/2009 3:28:38 PM
Well, we're planning that the actual band competition will be at like 8, and before then we'll have a Jazz combo group and maybe Acapella (spelling?) as warm ups, so I could definitely run it by the rest of the group .
2/9/2009 3:57:13 PM

2/9/2009 10:17:07 PM
We're looking to have bands from 8 till 12, and we were tossing around the idea of having 15-30 minute sets.
2/9/2009 10:58:23 PM
How about rap groups?
2/10/2009 1:57:40 AM
^ as a heasds up, dont forget to include setup and tear down time for each band when scheduling the event. it might seem obvious, but im just throwing that out there if you arent used to doing this kind of thing.
2/10/2009 8:35:56 AM
Yeah, I was thinking allowing for 10-15 minutes in between bands.
2/10/2009 9:18:59 AM
Unless you are having a backing line, that is not going to happen.
2/10/2009 9:31:46 AM
What's a backing line? We would probably extend the play time earlier if need be.
2/10/2009 12:42:10 PM
Backing line...you are providing part of the gear needed. such as the speaker cabs the guitarist and bassist would use, that way they just have to swap their head, and guitar so you don't need to re-mic every band. You also provide the drum set, and the drummer typically just swaps cymbals and pedals. If the band is bringing all their own instruments and amps, they need time to break down and pack everything up, then the next band needs time to bring in all their stuff and set up, and then the soundman needs time to re-mic everything and get levels.
2/10/2009 12:55:31 PM
Yeah you definitely won't be able to turn it around in 10-15 without backlining the stage. If you don't have access to said equipment, it shouldn't be too difficult to get some of the participating bands to fork up some gear to share.....not usually too hard to find someone who is hell bent on using their own drums / rig, etc.
2/10/2009 3:10:38 PM
These guys are right. I would most definitely recommend backlining.
2/10/2009 4:06:31 PM
Cool, thanks for the heads up.
2/10/2009 4:31:54 PM
hows it coming?I'm Big Business and i approved this message.
2/14/2009 2:12:01 AM
Its going well, we more or less settled on a stage. Now I'm gonna focus on getting bands, so everyone I've contacted I'll get back with.I might just make a new thread, but this is what we're looking at right now:As of right now, winning the battle will pay $500 minimum. We're going to have 4-5 headline bands to compete for the final prize at night, and then other bands can play/jam out during the day for exposure or w/e. We're going to have a jazz combo and other school groups on stage, and if you want to jam then that would be completely fine. We're going to be advertising the hell out of this through the different engineering schools, buying ads, Technician, anything. We are taking any and all bands, although no say yet as far as who will be able to compete - that part is still in the works . So far we've been talking about bringing in an A Capella group, Rap, Hip Hop, Metal, Rock, and whatever else we can find. This is about getting the NC State bands we have out there for the students. For the battle we're going to have a backline and an experienced stage crew (13 years of doing Battles) that will change bands in 5-10 minutes. We're looking at having around 30 minute sets for each band. This stage company is bringing in a baller-ass stage, sound, and light system so the Centennial Oval will sound like a damn stadium. The sound system is really good and any bands will just be able to plug and play.So if you know of a great NC State band around here or are in one drop a line and I'll get back to you.
2/17/2009 9:57:54 PM
even if they say 5-10 minutes in between bands, I would schedule 15 or you are bound to get behind imo, unless you arent doing any sound checks / remixing for bands which, especially for a mixed genre show, will get kind of sketch for a battle of the bands since a good mix can be extremely important. I dont think as a band I have ever been happy/content with the sound (both the on stage mix and crowd mix) immediately after a full band initial setup and plugging in even at the places with the best sound that we've played at. It has less to do with having a great sound system and good sound guy and more to do with the fact that different bands, different equipment, etc. don't all sound the best at the same settings and thus good sound for a show is never simply "plug n play."I know that it is just a battle of the bands and not a gig where they are getting paid to be somewhere (ignoring the prize money here, im talking guarantees) so I am not approaching this from the same angle, but taking down one band's equipment, and setting up another band's and having them start all in 5 mins is pretty unrealistic. Id say 15 minutes and at least give them a chance for very minor soundchecks and not simply setting the sound system on autopilot the whole night. It will make the sound much better and give each band a more fair shot
2/17/2009 11:17:32 PM
Fair enough. I was going off what the stage crew rep said, but you have a good point about there being multiple bands. I'll have to schedule in the 15 minutes then.
2/17/2009 11:21:59 PM
^^ I was just thinking about what it'd sound like if you and I played our rigs through the same cabinet and they didn't work with the EQ between sets. It made me LOL.

You should get Lost in the Trees to play, just for the setup nightmare. Two cellos, two violins, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums, tuba, f-horn, keyboard, two xylophones, and everyone sings.
2/18/2009 7:15:43 PM
Yeah fuck that, lol.

We're getting some hangups with administration, but hopefully it should be resolved with a meeting tomorrow.
2/23/2009 3:27:41 PM
Wellturns out that the big wigs have pulled their support and effectively made us cancel the Battle, but we're weighing our options of having bands out to play for a pig picking during the day.
