(tell me if I'm out of line here)

I'm organizing a ski trip with 4 friends to Lake Tahoe in March. 2 are traveling from NYC, 3 from RDU. As we're traveling from different parts of the country this requires some compromise.

So far the 3 of us in RDU are conceding to fly to Sacramento instead of Reno b/c its $100 cheaper for the NYC peeps and no price change for us NC folks. But that means we have a 120 mile drive to the slopes instead of a 50 mile drive.

No biggie, but here's what I have a problem with: The NYC'ers want us to take off work Friday to get on an American Airlines flight that leaves RDU at 11:40am Friday and departs from Sacramento at 8:30am Wednesday. That 8:30 flight blows b/c we'll have to leave the cabin before 5am to get to the airport with a time cusion (b/c we're flying from Sac instead of Reno). I found a flight with Continental (that costs $40 more for everyone) that leaves RDU at 6pm Friday (don't have to take off work) and leaves Sacramento at 12:15pm. Its also a shorter flight (1 hr layover both ways instead of 3 hr layover). Not to mention American Airlines sucks (always behind) and Continental is much better.

The NYC'ers don't want to do it. And why? B/c one of them has a $50 voucher for AA. Is he being a dick, or am I out of line? (I realize its actually a $90 swing for him)

How's about you just make separate travel plans. I can't imagine there's a price difference in having the cabin for those extra 6 hours. Let them leave at 5 AM, you can stick around until you need to go.

Since you're arranging it, you should just say, here's an X hour window when you should plan on arriving and departing. Pick whatever flights you want to.

^^2 rental cars instead of one is a very large price difference.

^Well I didn't arrange the lodgings, my friend did (guy in NY not a dick). But I'm trying to get everyone set with flight time. If those of us in NC stick to the Continental flight we'd be stuck still having to get up at the ass-crack of dawn for their early flight, and then get to sit around the airport for 4 hrs till our flight. I'd rather give my buddy $20-30 than deal with that crap.

Also, if we all take the flights with the same airline we'd be on the same flight for the TX-CA portion of the travel

It makes great sent to me.

Flight I suggest
-better airline (get food drinks included, flights more likely to be on time)
-shorter flight
-don't have to get up at buttcrack of dawn
-don't have to take an extra day off of work
-$40 more expensive

Flight friend wants
-$90 cheaper for one person
-longer travel time for everyone
-its AA, they suck (no food/drink, probably late)
-have to get up early as fuck last day (4am instead of 8am)
-have to use 4 vacation days instead of 3

give him the $50 he woulda saved along with a kick in the balls and save a vacation day by taking the flight you like.

Why not put it up for a vote. Worst case let them take the early flight and they can wait 7 hours for you to show up on the 6:00 flight.

Oh trust me, the answers in this thread aren't going to change my actions. I'm taking the Continental flight. Its just a matter of convincing my friend to not be a dick so I don't have to get up super early the last day and then wait around in the airport after their early ass flight leaves.

What does this guy do??

Does he make $9/hr working at a movie theatre. You'd think as a highly paid young professional likely he'd be flying somewhere in the future for vacation where he could use the voucher.

Go with something along the lines of he wants you three to each lose a day's pay, get up at the ass crack of dawn, and wait around in the airport for 3 hours so that he can use a $50 voucher.

Just tell them that it is an impossibility for you to take the day off and that you are going to have to take the Continental flight and that they can take the AA flight. No hurt feelings.

Then, they'll have to decide whether or not they want to get a separate rental car or wait 7 hours for your plane to arrive. When presented with those options, they will probably choose to fly Continental.

That 50 mile drive seems so long after flying and everything. I say fuck em, tell em to meet you on the slopes.

If i were you, I would:

Take the shorter flight, Stay in Reno -> shorter drive to slopes every day ($ + time). Besides a slightly more expensive flight (40-90 dollars) doesn't mean much if you have to sacrifice a work day (assuming you make more than that per day).

The drive from Reno is relatively quick even if you are going to the southern part of the lake, Heavenly etc. Be sure to hit up Kirkwood and Heavenly.

Whatever you do, make sure to rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. During heavy snow the roads will be restricted to 4-wheel drive/snowtires/chains only vehicles with checkpoints enforced by ST.

i like the lying idea personally.

tell him you cant get off work early.

when i organize shit, people do what i say or they dont go. its a pain in the ass for the person putting it together because you're automatically the "fun coordinator"

shop around and find a better deal on the rental car.

if you and your friends have the disposable income to fly out to tahoe to go skiing, 90 bucks shouldnt really make a difference.

I guess I need to clarify a few things. Our lodging isn't in Reno or Sacramento, we're staying in a house at Lake Tahoe very close to the slopes.

The plan is to get a fullsized SUV (Tahoe, Durango, Suburban, etc) to drive around in. We took a trip to CO last year and that's what we did. I'm not messing around with the weather. And no matter how good of a deal I find, it won't end up being cheaper to get 2 SUVs to rent than just one.

None of the people are in TKE actually, they're all HS buddies and the ones in NYC I lived with for 2 yrs when I lived up there.

I just check the group email replies to my stance, and the person in question said you (NC'ers) need to compromise. I then replied that we're already compromising by flying to Sacramento instead of Reno!

imo the "cost" of a vacation day is a lot more than $90. if your friend is in a financial situation where $90 matters to him (and its really not a $90 swing, unless the voucher is expiring soon) then try offering to throw him money or buy his dinner or something to make up for it.

The three from RDU should fly into Reno. Have a Shuttle pick you up at the airport the resort should have a fleet there - it will be ~$30.00 for each of you one way. Have the NYC guys fly into Sac and get the rental car. If you have to, take the shuttle back too. You'll be out $60.00 each for shuttle costs, big deal. You can still split the costs of the rental car with them, so why would they care???

^ Exactly. Cut this obtuse motherfucker out of the trip. I don't deal with irrational people. At all. If this dipshit can't see 3 inconveniences for 4 people compared to his $50 fucking dollars, I'd do more than X him out of the trip, I'd cut him the fuck out of my life.

Offer to "subsidize" his trip so he doesn't worry about not being able to use the voucher. If he takes it, then fine, he's a d-bag, but at least he won't be a complaining d-bag. Hopefully he'll see how unreasonable he is being if you are willing to go so far as to offer him money. Or he could just get offended and be an even bigger dick Haha.

LOL the "NCers need to comprimise" sounds like the NY yankee fucks are the ones not compromise. If the $50 is such a big deal than perhaps he should be saving money versus spending $texas to hit up lake tahoe.

^^^lol, well neither of them are originally from NYC. Turns out he has two $50 vouchers (from some trip him and his gf went on) and they expire in June or July. So for him its a $130 swing. And out of everyone in the group he does make the least. Of course, I was the one that needed convincing to go for financial reasons (was unemployed for a while/just got a new car) and now look who's pulling this crap.

I'm not going to deal with taking some shuttle from Reno. The guys from NYC are taking their stupid flight and will show up early and pick up the rental car and wait around for us. I'll just deal with the 3 extra hours of having to wait around on that Wednesday.

Also, I'm always the driver of the group (I prefer it that way and I'm a better driver than them) but when its 4:30am on that last day I'm telling him he can drive the damn SUV to Sacramento while I sleep in the back seat.

honestly... if one person is gonna cause 3 of you to miss an extra day of work & get up insanely early (ruins the relaxation of vacation), just so he can use his voucher, hes being a selfish little prick. is that voucher not good for an extended period of time? surely he'll be travelling again in the future.

I don't know how close of a friend he is but if it were me and my close buddies I'd call him out. If he's a friend of a friend, chances are you're going to hate him by the end of the trip.

he's from TX/NC, and I've known him since sophomore year of high school.

We're taking different flights and am not taking off Friday. Just have to deal with his early flight BS on Wednesday morning.

It is $130 savings for him, and he does make the least out of everyone going but if he was slick he'd find some way to use it that doesn't inconvenience 4 other people. Now I'm secretly hoping their return flights to NYC are totally fucked up just to spite them for using American Airlines

I used to fret over crap like this and then I realized - ITS JUST MONEY!

Spend a little more and be done with it. Don't let this ruin your trip or cause drama on it...you'll remember the great time you had, and nothing to do with the extra money you spent
