my internet service from my apartment complex is wireless only. they give us a log on that you enter on this page that you get redirected to when you first connect to the network and open a browser.

i want to get my wii online. is there some way i could get my laptop connected to that network, run a wire to a wireless router, and connect the wii to that? how about the ethernet adapter accessory they sell for the wii? i guess that would let me run straight from my laptop to my wii.

i don't know shit about networking. i can set up a basic wireless network following the instructions. that's about it.

You should probably call whoever handles the wireless service. They need to add your wii's mac address to their system and then it'll probably work.

^ As said, call, they will have to log your MAC address. You dont want to do what you said and run it through your laptop, pain in the ass to do that.

The easiest way is as jethromoore suggested.

You can also try spoofing the Wii's MAC on your computer, connect/log on to the network, "un-spoof", and then turn on the Wii. You won't need to contact your wireless provider if this works, but you will need to do it each time you want to connect the Wii.

If none of those worked, I'd probably start looking at using custom router firmware (tomato or dd-wrt or something).

^^you're SOL. it's "free" and you get what you pay for. "free internet" is a selling point on the apt or some shit. i wish they'd just lower the rent a little and i'd just get roadrunner and be done. their shit is down all the time anyway.

so if they add this MAC address, i won't have to do the log on thing like i have to do on my laptop and the wii will be connected all the time? if so, that'd be sweet, but i doubt they'll do it. some third party handles the network. also, how do i find this MAC address

The service provider can hook you up. It's just a matter of whether or not they want to.

As far as spoofing...you should be able to do it on your own.

On the Wii:

1) Wii->Wii Settings->Internet->Console Information
2) Write down the MAC address. It's a hexadecimal number, so it should only be numbers and letters A-F.
3) If you need to, go into Wii->Wii Settings->Internet->Connection Settings and enter any wireless network settings you need (e.g. SSID)
4) Turn off the Wii

On your computer:

5) Start->Control Panel->Network Cononections
6) Right click the wireless adapter and select 'Properties'
7) 'Configure' (should be near the top of the General tab)
8) On the new window, choose the Advanced tab.

This part may vary a bit for you, because what's available to change depends on your wireless adapter and the driver you have installed. Worst case, you may not be able not be able to change your MAC address.

9) In the list of properties, scroll down until you find the MAC address setting. On my computer the setting is listed as 'Locally Administered MAC Address'. It could be listed as just MAC, physical address, or something along those lines.
10) Select the MAC address property, enter the Wii's MAC address, and press OK.
11) Windows Key + R
12) In the text box, enter 'cmd' and press enter. A command line window should open.
13) At the prompt, enter 'ipconfig /all'
14) A list of shit will show up. Somewhere in there should be able to find your wireless connection. Check the physical address and make sure it matches the Wii's. If it doesn't match, then you haven't changed your MAC. Go back and see if you can find the right setting.
15) Connect to the interpipes and sign into your wireless service
16) Once you're connected, repeat the steps above, except select the default value for your MAC address (in my case I select the 'Not Present' radio button)

On the Wii:

17) Once you're no longer spoofing the Wii's MAC, turn on the Wii.
18) Wii->Wii Settings->Internet->Connection Settings
19) Select your wireless connection and select connection test.
20) Hopefully it works!

Make sure that you don't try to use the same MAC on your computer and the Wii at the same time.

On the intarweb:

1) Download Macshift to your desktop.

2) Extract macshift.exe to the desktop. The other two files are source--you don't need them unless you want to compile yourself or you're curious

On the Wii:

only thing i'm worried about is why it didn't let me use my log in info. i disconnected my laptop from the network before spoofing the ip, then while spoofing i tried to log in with it and it said that user was already logged in. i hope that doesn't cause any problems in the future.

^yeah, i knew that. but i had neither mine or my roommate's username logged in and it wouldn't let me log the wii's mac on with mine. it was like the network hadn't realized i had disconnected my laptop yet or something.

anyway, i spoofed it once using my roommate's log in and it worked all weekend. i disconnected it last night a few hours before my roommate got back and he was able to log right on with his laptop. i was satisfied. props to A Tanzarian.
