Today, for no reason I can discern, my Powerbook G4 failed to get past the white screen with the Apple logo. Tech support had me try a few tricks that didn't work, so my last option is to "archive and install". I was able to hook up the laptop to another mac and backup my important files via firewire. Wish me luck. Anyone else ever have to do this?

so no folder with a question mark?

hold down ?S when you power it on and see if you can get to single user mode
if you can, reboot with a leopard DVD in the drive, hold down C to boot from the DVD, then go into disk utility and run disk first aid and repair permissions

if that doesn't work, go for the archive and install.

Archive and install got everything back to normal with one major exception: iTunes won't launch. I bought Leopard this weekend so wish me luck on installing it.
