My wife and I started going through a baby name book, got bored after the A's, and settled on Amy.We had to give her a short first name to make up for my 12 letter last name.

Well we have decided murphy for a boy and annabelle for a girl. Murphy means seawarrior (according to my wife) and we both work near the water. Annabelle as it is a combo of our mothers names.[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 11:03 PM. Reason : .]

We named our kid Silas Ezekiel Hines. My husband kept shooting down every single name that I liked. He's all for Kevin/Michael/Chris and I'd like my kid to be known as something other than a last name or initial. We were watching Weeds one night and I said "What about Silas?" He said that wasn't bad, so I took it and ran. Even though it was on television, I knew that it was a little too old and a little too unpopular to make a huge come back. I liked that I couldn't come up with any teasing nicknames for it and that it was in line with our bookish leanings. My husband got Silas's middle name because he had this notion one night that we'd name our kid Zeke. I wouldn't have minded Zeke if our last name wasn't Hines. "Zeke Hines" sounded way too much like "Zeig Heil" for me. Not to mention, I could hear kids taunting "Zeke the Geek" or "Zeke the Freak." And with Silas's differences, I just could not do that to him. We sometimes affectionately refer to Silas as Zekeduhdeek.I high recommend the Baby Name Wizard if you are looking for a baby name book. It groups names according to style and had recommendations for sibling names. It was very handy dandy.

I my name is Marshall, just like my father and grandfather, but we couldn't settle on what to call our baby boy if we were to name him "the fourth" so we chose Landon.Landon wasn't in any of the baby name books we had, so we thought it was fairly original (like my first name). Well we were at the pediatricians 2 or 3 days after he was born for his first checkup and there was another newborn in the waiting room with us. When the nurse came to the door and said "Landon", all four of us adults stood up and we were like..."What is the last name?"Since, we have come across several Landons. My wife actually has one in her class this year and her childhood best friend, who she recently ran back into, also has a son named Landon.

freakonomics has a great part about kids named and what the rich / educated are naming their kids and what the poor / uneducated are - a little google searching can pull up that part of the book

My wife was bugging me to come up with a name for our son for months while she was preggers. One day, I sat down on the couch to write a list and popped in an old Cam'ron CD. I was like "damn, I like Cameron" and I told her and she loved it. We even call him "Killa Cam"

He carried the High Point Central wrestling team. He was like the only one of their wrestlers that could even win a match at a tournament.

Erick Daniel - first name from my grandfather, Alfrederick; second name from my mentor in college, Dan Coutcher (some of you may know him...he ministers to the ROTC units)Ethan David - I (not my wife) wanted to keep the EDC theme, so we picked Ethan. David is my cousin's name.

Nolan - after Nolan Ryan. I wanted his first and middle name to be Nolan Ryan, but my wife nixed that and we went with Nolan Tyler
1/12/2009 2:35:24 PM
we are preggers and the name is going to beIsabella Marie Johnson for girl. I have always liked this name. So has the wife. What we dont like is the damn Twilight books that may force us to change the name. On a side note good books to read for mindless fun. Marie is my wifes middle name which is a family name. Owen Reid Johnson for boy. Reid is a family name for me and my first name. Owen because we just both agree on it. Neither of us like Owen Wilson so that brought thee stock down. I'm not at that point yet, but since I'm a high school teacher, it'll probably just be a process of elimination sort of thing by the time I have a kid. Ya know, what names still aren't associated with horrible kids?

I used to really like the name Jackson for a boy, but now I work with a guy named Jackson who is the laziest, most untrustworthy person I have met in a long time. Thanks for ruining the name for me jerk

I don't have kids. Once I do I'll probably name my son after me and my daughter after my sister.[Edited on February 5, 2009 at 11:26 AM. Reason : -]

My husband and I had a really hard time agreeing on a name for our son. We read the 10,001 Baby Names book and I picked out several, but he hated everything I chose. One night while we were painting the nursery, it was pretty late and I was laying on the floor, next to the paint can, watching my husband finish up painting one wall. We were having the name debate again when I looked at the can and said what about Benjamin Moore? I ended up really liking Benjamin, and he was OK with it as long as I let him pick the middle name. He picked Maddox fairly randomly. Our son was more or less named after a paint can.

^ thats actually a cute storyim nowhere near having kids but the names i favor are all female names starting with A
2/8/2009 8:53:59 PM
I never realized how controversial baby names could be till my sister had hers. She and her husband decided not to pick a family name from either side and my grandma still holds a grudge about it; to the point its getting bothersome.
2/8/2009 9:00:45 PM
lol..friend of mine was going through the whole debate with the girl about a name for the kid thing. the deal was he'd let her have most of the say on the first name (he had to approve but basically she got to decide as long as he halfway agreed) and he got to pick the middle name--same basic deal w/as long as she agreed it wasn't a horrible name then he got to pick it on his ownthe ONLY name out of every single one she put on her list that he didnt like, is the one she chose and would not debate it with him at all--she just picked it and wouldn't even talk about it (did I mention she's a crazy bitch?)the really evil part is the name he didn't like was Rori, and he had went to speech therapy when he was a kid because he couldn't pronounce R's right..and basically he never learned to pronounce them..so now he can't really say his daughters name [Edited on February 8, 2009 at 9:59 PM. damn your friend needs to put on a pair of pants.
2/8/2009 10:49:58 PM
if he was smart, he'd call the kid by the middle name and turn that into the primary namethus owning the mom
2/8/2009 10:50:10 PM
Silas Ezekial..WTF??? Seriously..that's why people should be able to pass a test before being able to name human beings!!
2/12/2009 2:08:33 PM
it's a different name, but to each his own.if i were named that, i'd go by zeek.
2/12/2009 2:49:01 PM
Zeke
2/12/2009 3:36:47 PM
haha, my name is rory. i always hated when people had speech problems and couldn't pronounce it. my dad picked out the name, he got it from rory calhoun (actor). he was a dude though and i am a girl.

Silas Ezekiel is at least a normal name. It's a little old fashioned. . .a little too biblical, but normal and somewhat common place. It's nothing like some of the kiddos that I or my friends have taught. . .Trillian? Anakin? Telvin? Devine? And we figured that if Silas was a little too George Elliot, Brit Lit Geek for our kid that he could always go with Zeke or Sigh/Cy.

^^ I take it you try to avoid asians as much as possible, loly.
2/12/2009 10:38:15 PM
I think for a boy we'd go with Shawn Langston (but that's not in stone). My middle name is Sean... and I love Langston Hughes poetry. For a girl, it will be Lauren Alisha. My wife decided on that, but I like it.

My fiance really wants to name our first son Obadiah and call him Obi. Its grown on me cause ive been hearing it for the last 4 years but I must admit Im scared the kid will be made fun of. Actually at first wanted to name him Obadiah Jonathan but I def talked him out of it... he just wanted to be able to call him Obi Jaun.
2/18/2009 11:06:26 AM
I don't know that I would call my kid Obi. But that's just because I saw the reactions of all of the other parents to this kid named Anakin at the Montessori School.
2/18/2009 7:13:20 PM
We totally had awesome less common names picked out, until we met kids with those names and they were weird little mofos.
2/18/2009 9:57:50 PM
2/18/2009 10:26:36 PM
I don't get why people want to force uniqueness on their child by giving them some fucked up name.
2/19/2009 12:56:27 PM
Dont have kids, but want to name one son Charles Fosterand the other one was going to be Jackson (my middle name is Jack, my fathers name is Jack, so Jacks Son) but over the last 3-4 years its gotten to be a REALLY trendy name so that might fuck it up.
2/19/2009 1:34:56 PM
^^ To be fair it's a Biblical name but I'm guessing that's not the reason it's being suggested.
2/20/2009 10:56:03 AM
Wouldn't you call him Oba anyways?
2/20/2009 5:19:22 PM
I like the name Beckett for a boy. Other than that, have not really thought about it to much.
2/23/2009 11:54:16 AM
My kids are Benjamin Alexander and Katelyn Elizabeth. To be honest, they just kind of came to us one day. We talked about 100 different names, but always had reasons not to use one of them (knew someone that we didnt like with that name, etc..).
2/23/2009 1:37:58 PM
^4 Actually he likes it because he had a friend when he was little who had that name. He went to a catholic elem. so its not unusual to find kids there named after bibical characters. We looked up the story of Obadiah and we werent put off by the character either. And when it comes to Obi vs. Oba its just a nickname of a name. Sorta like the nickname of Benjamin is Benji but if you look at it technically it should be Benja.
2/25/2009 2:46:40 PM
ben is the nickname of benjamin
