I'm using the 7000 build right now. Seems to be pretty nifty. I have it using 500 mb of resources with everything enabled. Really liking some of the random features like the auto-changing desktop background.

did you install it in a VMWare image?
1/1/2009 4:13:08 PM
I don't know what that means, so... no? Just search the torrent sites for an .iso, mount it in Dtools, do "custom install" and it will install it on another partition. Took about 1.5 hours to dl and install.
1/1/2009 4:36:21 PM
it means you would install it as a virtual machine, running inside of vmware server or the like. This way, you can use it inside of your host operating system, without rebooting the physical machine.I think I'm going to download and try it out w/ VMWare server.
1/1/2009 5:02:59 PM
update: worked fine w/ vmware server 2.0 - even installed vmware tools.
1/1/2009 9:49:34 PM
BSoD before install could finish 100%
1/2/2009 8:58:42 PM
what environment?
1/2/2009 11:30:24 PM
stuck a fresh harddrive on a old HTC machine I had lying around. No the most commodity hardware so its not that surprising really. I didn't want to go through the trouble of making a vmware image even though that really is the right way to go.
1/3/2009 12:41:45 AM
when is this due to release?
1/3/2009 1:02:11 PM
the beta is supposed to be released officially early this month. There's speculation that Microsoft leaked build 7000 themselves. It's supposed to go gold around early next year, or possibly the end of 2009.
1/3/2009 1:40:40 PM
apparently it comes with native DivX and Xvid support. Will also support H.226 video and AAC audio, but not Fairplay DRM of course.
1/3/2009 2:35:15 PM
but will it have native ssh and sftp support?
1/3/2009 6:01:03 PM
looks like 7 is beating XP and Vista pretty handily on almost all real-world benchmarkshttp://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3236&page=2is there a summary of new features or interface differences in 7?
1/3/2009 8:56:45 PM
1/3/2009 9:04:25 PM
I downloaded 7 earlier today and have it up and running. Everything is going smoothly, except for the fact I have no sound. I did some google'ing and tried to download some drivers but nothing worked. So I went into the control panel to my sound options, told that to check the driver, and it told me that I didnt need an update. The computer acts as if I have sound. The little EQ thingy (?) bounces when I have music on, but nothing comes out. Im currently using a Dell 1420 that had vista on it

k, i have Win 7 running in VMWare. It installed very quickly, and seems very snappy and fast. Now granted, I have not used Vista very much, but I cannot tell any difference between Vista and 7. Is this supposed to be mostly a backend-update and optimization release? Kind of like what Apple is doing with 10.6/Snow Leopard?----is it just me, or does anybody else's head start swim when looking at or trying to use the Vista or Win 7 Control Panel? I mean, my god.... words, so many wordsSurely something must be said of the simple, readable elegance of the Mac System Preferences panel[Edited on January 4, 2009 at 5:15 PM. Reason : .]

I don't like either. Just give me a list (just like XP's detailed view)
1/4/2009 7:09:28 PM
I've got it installed in a virtual machine as well, but can't get the network adapter to work. Meh.Seems spiffy though, otherwise.

Something about the way MS draws their icons makes them completely nondescript and forgettable. Icon's should be memorable to help the user out.

Windows Vista SERun VER and see for yourself. 6.1Oh, and whatever happened to WinFS? That was the only feature that actually sounded useful in Vista.[Edited on January 4, 2009 at 9:28 PM. Reason : .]
1/4/2009 9:24:49 PM
WinFS is mostly dead afaik They are versioning it Windows 6.1 because of all the compatibility problems that crop up when applications check major version to determine compatibility.http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/10/14/why-7.aspx
1/4/2009 9:44:45 PM
im sure there are tons of installers that check for 6.0. Of course you can always try compatability mode or if that fails edit the installer :-)

So far I'm liking it a lot better than my first time with Vista. Seems to be more stable in the few things I've tried. I don't like how you can't (and least I can't seem to easily find out how to) add a toolbar to the top or sides of the desktop. I'll really miss that if I can't figure something out. Also it didn't find several drivers. Some I'm not so surprised at (my tv tuner card) and some I am (the xbox 360 receiver).Right now I'm really hating how they named this product for one simple reason. Googling anything at all specific to this OS is next to impossible. Granted, there's not gonna be a ton of stuff out there right now that's specific to this sort of thing, but it doesn't seem like this is a problem that will easily remedy itself over time.]

does it still ask for permission very 30 second? My first real experience w/ Vista was with the laptop my Mom jut got for xmas. In my attempts to clear it of AOL, trial software, and get it setup for her i almost through it out the window several times.
1/5/2009 11:04:57 AM
you do realize it's one check box to turn all that off, right?
1/5/2009 11:08:06 AM
no i don't. wheres this box? this would make mother happy

^^yepp, what ^ said I have absolutely NO idea what fucking idiot ever decided UAC was a good idea. It drove me insane for a while

^ The same fool that dreamed up that annoying paperclip."So I see you're typing a letter!"...no shit, really, good for you.
1/5/2009 12:11:40 PM
I leave it on, only in quiet mode:http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/Same thing as this:
1/5/2009 12:11:44 PM
^ i don't understand what difference that makes, though...i don't just want it popping up less, i don't want it popping up AT ALLalso, between the codebase version number and the fact that there have been more than 7 versions of windows (i guess it depends on how you count, but the blog post above and admits that some of the versions were just laziness)...AND the fact that there won't be any major changes (that i've read about, yet, anyway) between win7 and vista, it's completely stupid for them to call it "windows 7" EXCEPT as a ploy to get people to buy yet another OSit should totally be "vista se"[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 12:49 PM. Reason : VISTA SE FTW]
1/5/2009 12:38:35 PM
it is widely known that MS got lazy on the UAC stuff. The UAC prevents certain actions from happening, unless the user gives permission. For example, if you try to change, move, etc a certain file, UAC see's an attempt to change the file and prevents it, until permission is given. The laziness comes in there. It is possible to code the UAC to realize that a mouse click/user input is doing the changing and not a program on the computer. Of course, I guess someone with good enough skills could write something to get around this too.Good try by MS? YehDo I appreciate the attempt? YehGood implementation? A resounding no.I had UAC turned off for a while, but when I was messing around with some stuff, Vista never let me (kept saying I didn't have permission). Turning the UAC back on solved all of those issues.Maybe quiet mode (^^) works. What exactly do the mean by quiet mode? Let's the UAC run and automatically gives permission every time, without the pop-up?
1/5/2009 1:02:51 PM
^ that's what i thought quiet mode was supposed to do...but it still asks me for permission for some things (like renaming a drive/partition...not reassigning the drive letter, just the name, which doesn't matter at all)*shrug*

1/5/2009 3:39:36 PM
I thought windows 7 was supposed to be a touch screen OS. is this not true?
1/5/2009 3:43:28 PM
how do you define a touch screen OS? there's no reason it can't have a touch screen front end still...
1/5/2009 4:55:29 PM
it supports touch-screens yes, but it was never meant for it to be the main input source
1/5/2009 4:57:15 PM
Why can't this be final noooooooow
1/5/2009 5:43:50 PM
I'm really liking some of the things they've done with windows media center. The interface when watching tv is much better and it seems a lot faster. All the "problems" I'm having so far just seem to be easily fixable if I took some time to mess with them. Like I don't like how every time I reboot it puts the Recycling Bin icon up top instead of My Computer. I'm sure that's a setting somewhere. But so far no crashes at all. ]
1/5/2009 5:53:14 PM
set 'em upanybody started using this as their main OS?
