Anyone else here a victim? It sounds like nearly all 30gig Zunes have stopped working today. I have two of them. I have no idea how M$ is going to handle this one. The Zunes are frozen at the boot up screen with no way to reset them.http://forums.zune.net/0/1/404614/ShowPost.aspx#404614

I've had iPods in the past and liked them, but they were much more expensive and had a smaller screen at the time so I went with the Zune. This may be the end of them. Considering I'm one of the few people that took a chance to try their product and this is how I am repaid. This is about the 3rd time I've had problems with their software updates etc, but this is the worst. Nothing like bricking Zunes all across the world at the same time. I'm wondering if this was a disgruntle employee that did this or what?

somehow, I'm guessing this is Common's fault^ i was just gonna quote your edit too. they coulda made it a little more prominently displayed, considering this is a global problem, but i guess the front page of the support site is better than nothing[Edited on December 31, 2008 at 11:11 AM. what a bizarre bug.If the HD is constantly spinning though i imagine that hurts the lifespan.

They should have asked them about a timetable for the fix at least two more times.
12/31/2008 6:56:14 PM
I'm surprised there's no mention of a future software/firmware fix to prevent this from happening again.[Edited on December 31, 2008 at 7:02 PM. Reason : (unless they think nobody will be using a 30G Zune in 2012)]

hahaha after hearing about that I'm just not gonna turn mine on for a day or so and see if the internal clock rolls over correctlypretty sure you can fix it with a hard reset that requires you to open up the case, but I'm not gonna try it either way right nowI find it hilarious personally, even being one of the ones affected

There will be a firmware update for the 30GB Zune devices fairly shortly after the new year that will prevent this from happening in 2012. They can't do this while the devices are bricked though

Fix posted:http://www.pcworld.com/article/156248/microsofts_official_fix_for_failing_zunes.htmlMicrosoft's Official Fix for Failing ZunesTom Spring, PC WorldJan 1, 2009 9:52 amZune owners now have a fix for their failing devices thanks to Microsoft that has posted instructions on how to start the new year off with a working digital music player. Yesterday 30-gigabyte Zunes suffered a crippling glitch causing the digital music players to lock up, reboot themselves, and freeze. Zune users are calling Micorosoft screw-up "Zune 2K9," a reference to the Y2K bug. The problem was caused by the Zune's internal clock and its inability to handle leap years, according to Microsoft.Microsoft posted instructions on its support site Zune.net/support on how to thaw your Zune from its deep freeze and get it working again. However, if you're a Zune Pass subscriber with music managed by DRM copyright protection Microsoft says you might have to take extra steps to play those music tracks. The Zune fix (outlined below) will work at 7am ET January 1, 2009. Microsoft says it will also issue a fix for the device so that this problem won't re-occur the next leap year, in 2012.To Fix Your Zune Follow These Steps:1. Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.2. Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain-this is good. Wait until the battery is empty and the screen goes black. If the battery was fully charged, this might take a couple of hours.3. Wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 (that's 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time).4. Connect your Zune to either a USB port on the back or your computer or to AC power using the Zune AC Adapter and let it charge.Once the battery has sufficient power, the player should start normally. No other action is required-you can go back to using your Zune! What if I have rights-managed (DRM) content on my Zune? Most likely, rights-managed content will not be affected by this issue. However, it's a good idea to sync your Zune with your computer once the freeze has been resolved, just to make sure your usage rights are up to date. What if I took advice from the forums and reset my Zune by disconnecting the battery? This is a bad idea and we do not recommend opening your Zune by yourself (for one thing, doing so will void your warranty). However, if you've already opened it, do one of the following:* Wait 24 hours from the time that you reset the Zune and then sync with your computer to refresh the usage rights; or* Delete the player's content using the Zune software (go to Settings, Device, Sync Options, Erase All Content), then re-sync it from your collection.[Edited on January 1, 2009 at 10:55 AM.
