Getting your wisdom teeth out is not that bad. It hurts a little the day after you get them pulled, but you get to be a total bum for a while. Look forward to a drug-induced stupor for at least part of it. Before you go in, rent a bunch of movies. Also, go to the store and get some Ensure (or similar) and some yogurt, since you won't be able to eat anything you have to chew. Most importantly, be sure to closely follow the directions they give you for good healing - you really don't want to get an infection or start bleeding. That sucks that you're having it done on NYE - no partying for you this year!

Don't take more painkillers than what's on the prescribed basis. They have a nasty habit of stopping you up.

I got knocked the fuck out when I had all 4 of mine removed.I actually went out drinking that night as well. The pain didn't set in until about a week after the surgery.

I got mine out two weeks ago. Stock up on easy to eat food. Follow the post-operative care instructions like it was your religion and you'll be up and about in no time. Changing you gauze, applying lots of ice to your face the first day, and keeping up with your prescribed antibiotics are the three biggest things you need to be diligent about to have the most pain and discomfort free recovery possible.
12/30/2008 11:20:09 AM
had 4 pulled with just novicaine. All you feel is a bit of pressure.
12/30/2008 11:23:04 AM
all I ate was KFC mac & cheese when I got my 4 taken out
12/30/2008 12:56:56 PM
I had mine done 12 years ago, but I don't remember anything horrid. Except I got a sinus infection right after, that pretty much sucked bad.
12/30/2008 1:13:52 PM
1. Movies2. Soft foods3. Keep the holes (sockets) CLEAN...basically what everyone else has said. Also, hopefully yours aren't impacted (growing in sideways as opposed to up). Mine were & I had all 4 cut out (not pulled b/c that wasn't possible). All I can say is emphasis on keeping stuff clean, so you don't get an infection. Good luck! Its really not bad, just sit on your ass & watch movies or seasons of TV.
12/30/2008 4:01:48 PM
As most everybody said, the best way to heal is to follow the instructions like your life depends on it. From what I've heard, dry sockets are AWFUL. Luckily, if you do what you're supposed to, you won't get them. Also - my doc recommended ice for 20 minutes, heat for 20 minutes, etc, for the first 12 hours. I think that helped out a lot with swelling because I never got chipmunk cheeks. Also - Ciao Bella mango sorbet = amazing. I ate a whole lot of that.
12/30/2008 4:10:28 PM
They put me to sleep when I had mine cut out. They also said to eat right after I came out of the anesthesia, and it made me throw up packings and all. I got along pretty well except for one dry socket, which hurt like hell. When the dentist numbed it to cut it open, the novicaine didn't work and the scalpel cutting the gum hurt very bad, but provided instant relief. All in all, the experience could have been worse, but it wasn't fun.
12/30/2008 9:56:13 PM
is there a difference between pulled out and cut out? saying pulled makes it sound a lot easieranyways I've got one in ok right now and am avoiding going to the dentist, the fact that like 75% of people get them removed makes it seem like it's all some huge overdiagnosis scheme to get business to me
12/30/2008 9:56:44 PM
You may be correct on the overdiagnosis thing, but I was having a lot of pain before having mine removed. It was 5 days before Christmas in 2001 or 2002 and I was on a creeper putting the transmission back in my truck the next day. I was able to eat normally at Christmas, but I couldn't open my mouth all the way for about a month.
12/30/2008 10:02:15 PM
^^while you might think that, they're not just BSing you. Most people have problems with their wisdom teeth at some point in their life. Its a lot easier to deal with when you're young so as soon as its physically possible a lot of people choose to have them removed.
12/30/2008 10:46:25 PM
Day 1 crap...Day 2 sucks...Day 3 almost better...Day 4 good to goDon't drink out of straws or do anything to loosen the pits. They will eventually fill with bone and you're golden.

I am NOT the person to ask about this -- - Rare case, but long story short, I looked like I got stomped in the face by trucker boots... black eyes, huge face - etc. For most people, it's no problem....

I've heard absolute horror stories, and there are people like me who had no pain, no swelling, no bruising, nothing. Just do it and get it done.
1/1/2009 5:32:51 PM
never got mine (i'm 29). I'm more evolved like that, i guess
1/1/2009 5:38:26 PM
I got mine out on the 30th. So far its been very anti-climactic. I got knocked the fuck out for getting mine pulled, and when I woke up I felt great . After that I came off the high within an hour and there wasn't really any pain at all, maybe a little soreness. I didn't sleep all day, just got bored of watching a movie and played some xbox. I did keep up with taking the pain meds though, which weren't fun at all and didn't seem to do anything. All I had to eat was some of those liquid meal Ensure things, kinda like Slimfast.Mom definitely gave me the hookup with some of those frozen gel pack things, we got two of those for each side of my face, put them in a pillow case and wrapped them around my head . Was wearing that contraption all day, with fresh packs as needed.Day 2 I felt back to normal, kept taking the Ibuprofen meds. Had some eggs for breakfast, later got some McDonalds. I brushed my teeth carefully and did the salt water rinses though.Day 3 is today, fell the same. A little sorer than it has been, but nothing really bad at all. Still brushing my teeth and all, gonna do a salt water rinse soon.Overall, getting your wisdom teeth pulled is way over hyped.
1/1/2009 5:47:01 PM
yes, because your situation is exactly like everyone else'sdepending on how impacted they are, whether they are pulled or cracked into bits and removed, depending on whether you get dry sockets, it can go from miserable and non-solid food for weeks to eating a burger the next dayjust sayin, maybe you got lucky
1/1/2009 6:22:23 PM
I threw up immediately after waking up (blood). I remembering waking up and saying I am going to throw up, and they gave me something to throw up in but it just went all down my chin.....

1/1/2009 7:21:42 PM
Tomorrow's the day for me - bottom teeth are fully impacted and completely broken through, so not thinking it is going to be too much fun.
1/1/2009 7:31:11 PM
How are they impacted if they're broken through?
1/1/2009 7:38:57 PM
All of mine came through normally except I am missing one on the top so the one on the bottom has nothing to grow to...and they said my lower wisdom tooth needs to be removed because it is "super erupted"...but I can feel it touching my top teeth and I would think that would make it stop but they say it will just keep growing. Any experience with this? I HATEHATEHATE the detist and really do not want to have it pulled.
1/1/2009 10:13:41 PM
I got very lucky with mine. Dentist knocked me out during the operation and I felt fine when I woke up. I think I took some Ibuprofen when I got home and that was it. No swelling and I felt pretty much normal after a couple hours. Never used any of the pain meds I was prescribed. Hopefully yours turns out as well.

^^^ they are poking out from my jaw and just about resting against my back molars

I had all four pulled several years ago, two of them were impacted. I remained fully conscious for the whole procedure. It was quite an experience to feel nothing but to hear tap, tap, tap, CRUNCH "Got one! Three to go," from the surgeon.I woke up in excruciating pain at home, having slept through one of the times I was supposed to take my meds. Don't do that. I was horizontal for a couple days, but I got more milkshakes per hour than I ever had before.
1/2/2009 4:08:05 PM
I had all 4 of mine out and my face looked like fat bastard's for 2 weeks.
1/2/2009 4:11:25 PM
let's start posting xrays of our wisdom teeth, I got preliminary one where none had emerged yet but they all looked ok

Preventive removal of the third molars is a common practice in developed countries despite the lack of scientific data to support this practice. In 2006, the Cochrane Collaboration published a systematic review of randomized controlled trials in order to evaluate the effect of preventative removal of asymptomatic wisdom teeth.[8] The authors found no evidence to either support or refute this practice. There was reliable evidence showing that preventative removal did not reduce or prevent late incisor crowding. The authors of the review suggested that the number of surgical procedures could be reduced by 60% or more.Likewise, ClinicalEvidence published a summary,[9] largely based on the Cochrane review, that concluded prophylactic extraction is "likely to be ineffective or harmful." The website offered the following details: Molars are good for your health“ While it is clear that symptomatic impacted wisdom teeth should be surgically removed, it appears that extracting asymptomatic, disease-free wisdom teeth is not advisable due to the risk of damage to the inferior alveolar nerve. Some non-RCT evidence suggests that extraction of the asymptomatic tooth may be beneficial if caries are present in the adjacent second molar, or if periodontal pockets are present distal to the second molar.
1/2/2009 8:49:22 PM
Heh, I think I've still got the bag of my removed wisdom teeth around here somewhere.
1/2/2009 11:48:19 PM
I had all 4 of mine removed 2 months after I turned 18 (mesial and horizontal impactions). First they gave me N2O, then injected some stuff in me that I could feel flowing through my body that made me itchy, and then some anesthesia (either through the IV or the mask, not sure which) that knocked me the hell out.The worst part is using that syringe to clean out the lower holes, where all the food collects.
1/3/2009 10:33:24 AM
^^^ My wisdom teeth were not asymptomatic. I know how to read x-rays and I didn't need a dentist to tell me there were problems. Anyone who gets asymptomatic teeth removed is an idiot.

just found out today i'm going to have to get all 4 of mine taken out in the near future. bottom right is impacted and the others they couldn't see with a normal x-ray. from what i've seen here, average recovery time seems to be around 4 days... is that about right?
1/26/2009 4:57:52 PM
For me as long as I stayed on the Ibuprofen pain was never too bad, especially after day 2. It was just hard to chew. 2-3 days of very soft foods, another 3-4 of not eating anything like nuts or crusty bread, etc.Shits still getting clogged up on the bottom where the teeth used to be though (three weeks later). One time I flushed out a whole corn kernel out of there
1/26/2009 5:07:03 PM
no impactions here
1/26/2009 8:14:52 PM
I had 6. No lie.
1/26/2009 11:01:43 PM
Holy shit QTPie got fucked up
1/27/2009 12:39:56 AM
I had mine taken out two at a time (about 3 weeks apart). I barely used any Vicodin and started my summer job that same day. I didn't get knocked out for the operation, just local anaesthetic. It wasn't bad at all, the worst part was hearing them crack my teeth
1/27/2009 12:15:02 PM
I got all 6 of mine taken out (I had an extra set below/behind the bottom 2) kfc mashed potatoes and jello instant pudding for 2 days was great
