I want a small, extremely portable, yet durable external HDD.I bought a 320gb WD Passport last week and it kicked the bucket after literally 1 day of use. HDD failure.

Seagate FreeAgent Go (the 2.5" new version) + 5-year warrantyhttp://tinyurl.com/9egblplike this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148341or just build it yourself. 2.5" enclosures are like $10 + cost of 2.5" hard drive and it's like 4 screws[Edited on December 29, 2008 at 11:43 AM. Reason : warranty]

True..maybe i'll just replace the drive that was in the Passport.I guess I just got a bad drive because I've always heard that WD was reliable...

I've had good luck with WD Passports...I have a 250GB that I've been using off and on for a year or two and its never given me any problems...sounds like you might've just gotten a lemon

1st two choices:Western DigitalSeagateI also have a Calvary 1Tb that I'm fond of. It's obviously not portable but they make 2.5" drives. They use Seagate, Western Digital (WD), Maxtor, Samsung, and Toshiba drives [Edited on December 29, 2008 at 12:01 PM. Reason : .]

^ i hate plastic enclosures as a general rule, but i'm pretty sure the WD my books have a pretty solid track recordyou can definitely get a 500gb cheaper online...by about $20...so unless your gift card is $20+, i'd get it online and spend the money on something else at best buymy $0.02

I already have an HDD but i have a question about using it.I really only have the HDD to store my music on. Not really using it for backup or anything else. That being said, should install the manager software stored on the drive or should i just use it like a plug and play mass storage device? I guess i'm wondering, because right now I have the software installed and it seems like the HDD is always spinning even though I'm doing nothing remotely associated with music or the files stored on the drive.
