Anyone interested in throwing in 50 or 100 dollars to see who can make the biggest transformation from the beginning of the semester until the Friday of dead week. Winner take all (or if there is a lot of interest a guy division and a girl division).I was thinking of judging based on complete transformation from a before picture on the first day of the semester and an after picture. (muscle mass, weight loss, etc.....)This would probably be enough to inspire me to actually get in shape.
12/28/2008 11:27:24 PM
man, this is exactly what it'd take to make me finally get into shape
12/28/2008 11:29:05 PM
can the transformation be in an unhealthy direction?
12/28/2008 11:35:06 PM
I'm doing one with a couple of fellow portly friends of mine but I would never keep track of it online because I'll inevitably cheat and lie about cheating and don't want a paper trail to come back to me
12/28/2008 11:37:30 PM
^^has a point really. What kind of transformation? Will it be quantitative or qualitative? If this is purely picture based, whomever drops their bodyfat the most will win w/ it being on tww, most likely. Some people wanting to take part, may have other goals.[Edited on December 28, 2008 at 11:40 PM. Reason : ]

I think that will be decided on who participates. I figure we could all meet at the bell tower. The same person would take the before & after pictures of everyone so no one can photoshop. I guess at that point 5-6 measurements could be taken along with weight (if we go that route)My husband wants to gain muscle mass and my main goal would be to lose weight. If there is ton of participation we could do a weight loss category and a muscle gain. We could just pull the rules of one of the massive competitions online and use those. Open to suggestions.....
12/28/2008 11:49:03 PM
damn, where was this two years ago???
12/28/2008 11:51:15 PM
There would have to be a fair measure of improvement if money is involved. One idea is to use percentage improvement, but better models would take into account the difficulty of someone in X shape to get to Y shape in a certain time interval.
12/29/2008 12:25:46 AM
if i worked out as much as i wolfwebbed i'd win
12/29/2008 12:27:31 AM
or rather, if you were as prudent w/ your diet, as with your tww....
12/29/2008 12:31:18 AM
i would say "I'm in" but i don't think it would be fair to everyone else. i'd just take your money, haha.
12/29/2008 6:31:39 AM
I'm in. I can binge eat, gain 100 lbs., and then have reconstructive surgery and take hormone treatments so I turn into a large man.Win!And Jaime, it's only cheating if you get caught.[Edited on December 29, 2008 at 8:35 AM. Reason : .]

This thread is biased against those of us that are already in good shape. What am I supposed to do? Get MORE muscular?
12/29/2008 8:49:06 AM
gronke and muscular does not compute

I'd talk to porcha, as I'm not trying to gain weight.I do eat a diet heavy in meat, potatoes, and breads. I'm currently around 170lbs. I dropped from 190 last year. I'm trying to get my body fat below 10%, but that's going to be very difficult.
12/29/2008 2:34:02 PM
obviously if you're only a little off from looking ideal then this contest isn't for you. if you're quite overweight you can win easily but overall effort will be harder for you. in other words, stop bitching about shit being biased, everything is
12/29/2008 2:42:43 PM
I was joking. If you need an internet message board challenge thread to get your fat ass on the treadmill, then you're just going to gain the weight back after it's over since you clearly have no motivation.
12/29/2008 3:30:58 PM
haha this should be fun
12/29/2008 4:47:40 PM
I plan on getting in shape. I thought this would be a good way to meet new people and maybe do a little competition. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mhptrans4.htmhere is the body building competition one......

I'm doing Crossfit today with a trainer.2 sessions of methods and techniques for $100 ( $50/class).Then on, 20 sessions for $250.I don't think that's too bad.
12/29/2008 5:25:42 PM
I'm not overweight, but I want to tone to this level:
12/29/2008 5:27:38 PM
just stay in shape for the sake of staying healthy and physically fit, not for any challenge.
12/29/2008 5:46:39 PM
id do it but not sure how eager i am to lose 50 bux

^^^ that is very tough to achieve for a woman. Good luck though. Take lots of fat burners and run alot.[Edited on December 29, 2008 at 6:23 PM. Reason : z]
12/29/2008 6:22:53 PM
ummm...or you can just eat healthy and work out. no fat burner crap needed. of course not EVERYONE can get that but jeebus no need to recommend fat burners
12/29/2008 6:27:00 PM
well yes, but you and I both know that most don't eat healthy and in moderation or workout regularly. Also once you reach that body type that you want...then what...you have to work hard to maintain what you have. Most just fall back into the trap of laziness with a hectic work schedule.[Edited on December 29, 2008 at 6:31 PM. Reason : not everyone though...key word is most]

yeah, the push jerk is probably going to be the hardest. Oh and kettlebell swings, forgot to mention that. I also started last week, tabata treadmill run. I'm starting with 8-9% incline. I can do 20-30 seconds. Jump off for 10 seconds and repeat. 10 seconds for me is too difficult to recover. I usually recover by walking uphill for about a minute or 2 then start back up again. takes the work off the knees but now my ankles are killing me. Which is why I do the modified box jump, instead of jumping off, I step off one foot at a time. Less impact...

charlotte's affiliate has an "essentials class" that is 25 per session. It's more than an hour--basically however long you need, and it could be one, or a group. Individual training is 25, also. But this is in Charlotte, not Raleigh. If the feedback, or instruction is on par, it's well worth the 50, i think.Split jerks were hard for me to get as well (damn feet work), after finally getting the triple extension down for all oly movements. If you haven't done so, go over to crossfit.com and watch all lecture videos for form work on squat, dead, bench, oly's by ripptoe. Watching Dan John's video fitcast would also be worthwhile.
12/30/2008 1:19:26 AM
Where'd you get the info on the Charlotte classes? I'm thinking about switching up and doing a trainer session 1/2 times per month.
12/30/2008 3:22:26 AM
http://www.crossfitcharlotte.comon the left there are links to an essentials class, and to membership rates (which rates for walk ins, training sessions, a block of sessions, etc)[Edited on December 30, 2008 at 3:47 AM. Reason : ultimate crossfit has moved to southend, but their WODs are shit. ]

Ok it seems from my PMs there is serious interest. Here are a few of the suggested competitions:1) Weight loss- 10 points for every 5% of total weight lost and 1 point for every pound. This was suggested by someone who wants a very objective system.Everyone has an option of bringing a scale to weigh on and your weight is deemed average of all scales at the pre and post weigh in.2) Someone suggested going to the gym to get measured with calipers and the biggest change in BMI and fat composition win.3) The last suggestion was try to get a panel of NCSU gym teachers judge the before and after pictures.
12/30/2008 7:44:50 PM
This is going to end up with someone hurt.
12/30/2008 8:03:21 PM
We did this a year or two ago. My husband and I (eleusis) hosted the weigh-in at our house, and people showed up to use our digital scale for their first weigh-in and their last weigh-in. For those that couldn't come, they took a picture of their weight with a glass of water next to it, or something like that, and they emailed their weight. It didn't really work out too well, because people didn't show up to pay up, or they didn't show up to weigh-in. There's lots of interest, sure, but chances are you'll have 25% of those people actually show up.Good luck though!
