This Utah student basically went into a govt auction meant for big oil companies and started bidding on land and ended up either driving the price up that the oil companies had to pay or actually won the land himself. http://www.democracynow.org/2008/12/22/posing_as_a_bidder_utah_studentThis guy is a hero. I wonder if charges would be dropped against him if someone actually did pony up the $1.8 million to buy the land he won.

How is he a hero? Oh noes the scary "big" oil, runz away! Omfg, the government had an open bidding on land rights for oil and gas, how dare they!

he is a hero b/c he has now tied up the sale of at least 22,000 acres of land until at least February. In February an administration who will not allow the sale of such land will be in place. The problem isn't that the gov't put up land for sale it is the fact that they are trying to get this shit done before Bush is out of office so it's shady the way they are going about it. That and the fact that a lot of the land is in national parks and other protected lands.[Edited on December 24, 2008 at 3:47 PM. Reason : this is just Bush's last Fuck You to America]

I was always under the impression that auctions were just held for intent to buy. I mean, it's not like they credit check everyone that walks in the door to make sure they can afford the shit they are bidding on. I mean, THEY SHOULD, but they don't. That's their own fault. Dude shouldn't face any legal repercussions in my opinion.

i applaud this guy. besides being a strong supporter of our public lands actually staying public, i've travelled to all the areas in question. i've been to a large majority of the states in the country, and it's definitely within the top few most beautiful places i've been too.though bush and company ultimately allowed it to happen, i doubt it was totally their idea. the blm and national park service is in desperate need of revenue. while obama might put a stop to things like this, i doubt he plans to allocate the funds to these two agencies that they so desperately need to maintain what they currently manage. at least not in the near future. it could be argued that if we can't take care of what we've got, what's the point in having it? while i'm sure a lot of this sounded like a great idea to bush/cheney, i wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't largely instigated by the blm and/or nps to get some much needed revenue before the change in office. i imagine they simply said here's what we have that's worth the most per acre, sell it. still doesn't excuse any of it, just saying.i have to laugh a little bit at the irony being set forth by some of these environmental groups. many of them have been fighting tooth and nail to severely limit and in some cases completely eliminate recreational activities in these areas. especially moab, arches, etc. what happened to "access for all"? wasn't that the whole point of blm land? is it worth it to save and protect this land when it can't even be enjoyed due to it being regulated and restricted to death? what i'd really like to know though is how the sale of public land wasn't open to the public?
