and there is a .01 charge from yesterday that I didn't make and it says it was made in KY. I called SECU and they told me they couldnt do anything until it cleared (Monday at midnight) and then I can dispute the charge. It shows on the statement that it was for some doctor in KY. I did a google search and the only doctor by the name and he has no office in this particlar city. So, now it is a waiting game, reduced my balance and overdraft protection to slightly more than what I have outstanding. I guess I will be getting a new card now. I have read where you get either .01 or a dollar charge and it goes through then a week later they hit you for like 200 or something.

it's typical for someone to "check" the card using other peoples merchant accounts for very small amounts..or sometimes they'll swipe it at a gas pump then just hit cancel after it's approved. It's possible they'll try to run up something big later but there's really no way to know. Personally I'd be reporting the card lost/stolen now so that when they try to use it it doesn't work and you don't have to deal with getting your money back..
12/21/2008 1:36:15 PM
^ yeahcancel that card right nowit isnt worth the hassle later

I am going to see what clears after Monday, because it was listed as a transaction for today since he happened yesterday along with the two stops I got gas at Friday. I know I havent seen any doctor in Kentucky so I will probably cancel the card if the charge still shows up just to be safe. What sucks is it takes like 2 weeks to get a new one along with a different pin number to memorize.
12/21/2008 4:08:09 PM
yeah, but 2 weeks of inconvenience is better than having to deal with getting your money back from fraud

12/21/2008 8:35:35 PM
it doesn't take anywhere near 2 weeks to get a credit card in this casealso if you only have 1 card and this is the only way you can pay for something then this should be the time to fix that

The bar gave my card to the wrong person the other night, so I am stuck with this charge sitting on my account in the hold section until the fraud affadavit goes through and they can take it off. I have no debit card right now until some time after Christmas, but that is okay as I can still go to the bank and withdraw money that way.
12/22/2008 1:18:41 PM
it hasnt cleared yet, I put a freeze on it for now. The first SECU rep I talked to didnt know shit....the second one actually did his job and gave me more info. They told me it would take 5 days. I can go to the bank and withdrawal some money before I head back home. I dont really want to cancel it for no reason. The SECU rep said the charge was actually .00 and that the charge occurred in the zip code where I am staying (I was asleep at the time the transaction occurred) He said most times they would test it to make sure it is active and then immediately start purchasing things on it before the card holder knows (1 cent charge wouldnt really raise red flags until it was to late).[Edited on December 22, 2008 at 1:36 PM. on a side note, i love secu's new feature that allows you to see where your pending charges are coming from
12/22/2008 1:45:30 PM
IF you don't live anywhere near Kentucky, then there is definitely something strange going on.I concur with others you should cancel the card.

12/22/2008 2:04:23 PM
Go to the bank today and take out more than enough cash to last you a week or so.Cancel the card.Keep an eye on your statements. It's what smart people would be doing right now.

12/22/2008 2:11:28 PM
dont be a fucking retard and cancel the damn card before you get into a world of butt hurt
12/22/2008 2:11:47 PM
I am not going to cancel it yet....waiting for the charge to go through although it appears according to SECU that it was canceled. No need to jump the gun for nothing and the account is suspended right now so nothing can happen and I will check on it Sat to see if any charges have been attempted before I make a decision as to whether to cancel the card. SECU is good with unauthorized charges so I know if something did happen I would get the money back...plus, since I religiously check my account online, I will find out about it fast.[Edited on December 22, 2008 at 4:46 PM. did you not read my post or do you just not comprehend how it works? they now know the card is good and could wait any amount of time before they actually try to use it for a high amount. it is not worth the hassle it's going to be to not get a new card. sooner or later somebody is going to charge some higher $$ things to it.. it could be tomorrow or it could be a two months from now when you've forgotten about it. you're much better off just getting a new card[Edited on December 22, 2008 at 5:02 PM. You deserve the expensive and time-consuming lesson that is in your near future. You have been told thirty ways til Sunday to cancel the damn card, and yet, you still persist in thinking you're okay, and that it's an unnecessary hassle to cancel the card.Just what kind of hassle do you think it will be to try to get your money back, when fraudulent charges go through?

No attempted charges have been made to the card since I suspended it. I looked online and I didnt see the charges anymore and called SECU and there have been no attempts at charges on the card since I suspended it and the .01 is not showing up now. The only thing that worries me sorta is that someone was checking to see if it was a active card like gas stations do (charge a dollar). If I had not checked it Sunday I would of never known about the penny charge that was pending. I might cancel it Monday when I am back home since that would be the earliest that could send me a replacement anyways since they are closed a good amount of the time between now and then. It takes 5-8 business days before I get the replacement card. I am going to wait until Monday and call to see if any charges have been attempted...if it hasnt by then, I doubt it will. When this usually happens they do the dollar than within hrs they charge a big purchase and dont wait to do it. [Edited on December 23, 2008 at 3:25 PM. Reason : w]

Dude, trust what people are telling you. It takes no effort at all to get a new card. When someone skims your information and preps it for an online sale they're going to use any merchant possible to verify it before selling it for 50 bucks.Someone might be stocking up, they'll save your information in a text file until their blank PVC magnetic strip cards come in and their fakeID is matched to your information. Or they're waiting for the russians to emboss their fake visa card to match it as well. They might be waiting until whomever janked your shit comes through with the other part of the bargain and watches a week's worth of ATM security feeds to grab your pin number as well.Is this far fetched and most likely not applicable to your situation? Yes. Is it worth the risk and the hassle that comes with it after the fact? No.Replace the damn card.
12/23/2008 4:26:11 PM
Grandmaster is 1000% correct. I wasn't going to go that in depth but yeah, listen to him.and of course the $.01 charge wasn't finalized--if they had left it on there then you would have noticed (well, a normal person who doesn't use online banking) it on your next statement. had you not been looking online you would have had no clue whatsoever.just get a new damn card and thank us later when you realize how ignorant you're being. i'm done trying to tell you.[Edited on December 23, 2008 at 4:51 PM. I ordered a specialty tire from a very polished web site a while back. I mean, this site had a flash intro and everything! So, dumbass me uses a debit card. Anyway, when I completed my order, my order number was #26. That should have been my first clue.Well, three weeks go by and nothing arrives. So I call the number on the website. "De Dee DEEEEE...The number you have called is not in service..." So I check the domain name, and do a google search for the owner's name. First thing that pops up is a California news article about a tire shop owner being arrested the previous weekend for credit card fraud and a tractor trailer of stolen merchandise. I immediately leave work and go to my bank.I tell the bank manager I'd like to close the account and open a new one. She tries for 20 minutes to convince me that everything will be fine and to just keep the one I had. So I ask her if any unauthorized charges will be reimbursed. The answer is, of course, "No.". In fact, I will be liable for any overdrafts that may occur. At this point I say I want to close the account, and again she tries to dissuade me. I finally have to raise my voice so the entire bank hears me to get her to close the account, and I walk out with my entire balance in cash.Of course, I'm still out the amount I paid for my order to begin with. After several emails threatening legal action against the owner by name I finally got a response from the company(it's actually the guy's wife) a month later. Two weeks after that I get a refund check in the mail in a hand-written envelope. They already had my address, and I had theirs. What did I have to lose?Moral of story:I GOT LUCKY AND THE COPS SHOOK THIS DUDE UP FOR ME. CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT. USE A CREDIT CARD IN THE FUTURE!
12/23/2008 4:50:12 PM
^!!!!!! Never use a debit card online. Always use a CC. Unless your bank has a CC like policy on canceling charges.
