i turn off DHT and peer exchange, i encrypt all my traffic via an ssh tunnel to sweden, and i only use private trackers.]

don't forget to change what IP you report to the tracker.. but i mean come on, there's not much else you can do, it's still traceablethe main two answers here are:a) don't torrentb) torrent only legal downloads[Edited on December 14, 2008 at 10:15 PM. Reason : .]

yeah, it's always traceable if they're willing to try hard enough to find youthe principle most people bet on is that there are SO many people out there who torrent without having any clue what they are doing... those are easy targets for the RIAA/MPAA/etc...one would think they'd go after the easy targets and just give up if it takes them any effort to trace you beyond a subpoena to your ISP unless they have a specific reason for doing soit's all about minimizing risk

12/14/2008 10:27:09 PM
i don't worry about it. I figure, with all the other shit going on right now, nobody is going to come after me for downloading a few HBO and Showtime shows a week.I don't do music, movies, or software. Just premium cable TV that I don't subscribe to.
12/14/2008 10:37:24 PM
what tunnel in sweden? Do you pay for tunneling access? If not, how do you cope with what is certainly a loss in speed?I think i've only really heard of 1 case where they actually took a non-college user to court over downloading. I figure with my relatively little downloading, and very little uploading (seed rate usually is not higher than .3 for me-- TWC's upload is terrible), they're not going to bother me.[Edited on December 14, 2008 at 10:55 PM. i'd much rather have an additional layer of protection over speedand i'm fairly happy with what i get - it caps out at around 300KB/sec and that's more than enough for me.
12/14/2008 11:27:55 PM
wait 2 weeks after something is released before downloading it
12/15/2008 1:50:09 AM
I usually do peer guardian 2 (block all sources, block http)but, like every has said, its not fool proof but its better than nothing
12/15/2008 3:16:23 AM
^^ why is that?
12/15/2008 5:47:18 AM
lol. Peer guardian. I cant believe scrubs still fall for that junk.Strength in numbers is the only thing protecting your torrents. Anyone who can scrape the tracker can find you.
12/15/2008 8:34:20 AM
I don't worry about it. Don't they all just drop the charges if you use a wireless network? That is, unless they can prove your wireless network was secure and you were the one using it at the time?

12/15/2008 8:13:05 PM
i'm not rationalizing. I was just pointing out that i haven't heard of anyone going after people for downloading TV. They seem to be mostly concerned with movies and music. Therefore, i'm not saying that it's "OK" for me to OMG STEAL 2 hours of premium cable a week, i'm just saying the risk of doing that appears to be much, much less than downloading other stuff. oh, and btw^ .... wow, almost identical post![Edited on December 15, 2008 at 8:18 PM. was this thread really necessary ? come back to us when you're actually trading actively in the scene and your group is the one providing you the .nl shell access from some ultra private box at a random amsterdam uni so that you can do nothing but RATRATRAT in your privately written version of pftp (or stolen mew build) all day to win your races. That or just donate 100TB of hard drive space.I use my own non-spoofed, unencrypted, residential connection to download whatever the fuck I want. Most of the people that would even care to see the responses in this thread have already given up warez all together or at least gave up contact with the scene (where you actually need to worry about this type of bs security).Having said all of that, I totally purchased my first piece of software since Diablo II/Warcraft. ESET NOD32! Only because I couldn't find a reliable cracked version. And christ, you guys fall into Noen's trap every single time in every single thread about piracy. ^^ I don't think you get what anybody here, Noen or the rest of us, are saying. Nobody here is trying, in the least, to justify piracy or downloading stuff for free. The only thing going on is people asking be best ways to to it "safely", if there is such a thing.[Edited on December 16, 2008 at 4:59 PM. Reason : .]
12/16/2008 4:58:43 PM
did you see my post #2 in this thread? i already responded to that, now i'm just responding to the other posts in this thread.the point of this thread is basically asking how to pirate via torrent "safely".if you were doing anything legal, you wouldn't be asking this question.i think what Noen is saying is to not talk about anything directly related to piracy. (although i'm interpreting this from his don't post links to pirated material)i think Noen's trying to do you a favor, although this is the wolfweb and i'd say there's more questionable material on here than "how to torrent safely" but still we don't want this place shutdown, blocked, fined or whatever.[Edited on December 16, 2008 at 5:13 PM. ^Exactly. The entire premise of this thread is that the OP is doing something necessary of protecting his identity. The legal ideal of torrents is that everyone's identity is public and shared (in terms of their data). Agentlion: You are justifying piracy by saying you wont get caught. This entire thread is justifying it by saying it's a legitimate discussion with technical merit. It's not.

so even for legal torrents it's now 'wrong' to want to be completely anonymous? wtffuck that shityou guys can go on and on about "well if you weren't doing anything wrong why would you try to cover it up?" it doesn't make that argument any more valid, or make my rights to privacy any less important.

Don't torrent. If you have to, use DDL fora instead... from what I understand, they're safer if you go thru a proxy. Especially when you're downloading Creative Commons and public domain files like I do, because stealing is bad. [Edited on December 18, 2008 at 7:23 PM. I believe the intent was to allow people to communicate freely in the presence of government censorshipI think the reality of its use alludes to the role copyright has begun to play in our society, that of intellectual and cultural oppression by a privileged minority, and implies something of the motivation behind the "piracy movement"
