12/12/2008 10:40:41 AM
I had no job from July 2nd till September 3rd. It was actually a fantastic summer But good luck with the continuing search.
12/12/2008 10:52:45 AM
Checking in! Since Aug... unless you count temp jobs.
12/12/2008 11:04:32 AM
ive realized that unemployment pays more than any shitty part time job I can get.so thats where im at.
12/12/2008 11:06:54 AM
^ true. I was only unemployed for 2 weeks, so I only collected one check. But I was approved for $511 a week. No wonder people milk that shit for as long as they can.
12/12/2008 11:10:28 AM
^^ yeah, but you can still pull Unemployment and have a part-time job that pays up to 20% of your previous salary. I'm officially unemployed starting Monday. The announcement that our office was closing came on October 13, and in accordance with the NC WARN Act, Dec 12 is most of our's last day. One last paycheck next week, severance pay in early January, then starting Unemployment in March or so (unless, obviously, i find something else before then)[Edited on December 12, 2008 at 11:13 AM. Reason : .]^ yeah, the idea is that Unemployment should keep you as close to your previous lifestyle as possible. However, if you are pulling the maximum Unemployment pay (~$500/week), then you will get it for <6 months. If your original job paid less and you only pulled, e.g. $200/week, then you can get it for 1+ years[Edited on December 12, 2008 at 11:14 AM. Reason : .]
12/12/2008 11:13:06 AM
im getting 300 bucks a week which is fine with me considering how much I was making working 40 hours a week. so yes I understand why people milk that[Edited on December 12, 2008 at 11:14 AM. Reason : but i live in new york so my rent is killing me.]
12/12/2008 11:14:19 AM
^^ I think a 6 month paid vacation would be pretty nice.[Edited on December 12, 2008 at 11:15 AM. Reason : a]
12/12/2008 11:15:43 AM
~$500 a week sucks if you are pulling in almost ~$1700-2000/week
12/12/2008 11:21:41 AM
if you can't live on $500 a week then you live a pretty high class lifestyle
12/12/2008 11:23:46 AM
or you're mortgage is something like 1600 bucks a month.
12/12/2008 11:25:52 AM
Most banks will give you a harship forbearence on your mortgage if you get laid off as well. Will let you go interest only for 6 months in most cases. When my dad died, my mom took a forbearance on her mortgage. Her payments are only $300 a month through the end of March.
12/12/2008 11:28:24 AM
well, there is a huge difference in being "able" to live on $500 a week (ie someone just sets you down in a city and says, 'go do your thing, ill pay you $500 a week') and living somewhere with set payments based around a normal paycheck of $1000 per week or something.so i mean yea, its easy to live off of 500 a week no doubt, but kind of sucks if you have a mortgage and car payments etc etc^ didn't know that[Edited on December 12, 2008 at 11:29 AM. Reason : ]
12/12/2008 11:28:56 AM
well yeah thats why you should get a job instead of living off unemployment.
12/12/2008 11:30:42 AM
My buddy is going through the process on his mortgage right now actually. He just got laid off himself, and they are getting ready to reduce him to interest only until he gets back to work.[Edited on December 12, 2008 at 11:31 AM. Reason : a]

12/12/2008 11:59:34 AM
My dad has been unemployed for the past 3 years.
12/12/2008 12:12:06 PM
I'm employed for four more days. Started the job on Monday.I might as well be unemployed.
12/12/2008 12:18:35 PM
12/12/2008 12:25:14 PM
me
12/12/2008 12:25:33 PM
Three hundred bucks a week sounds amazing to me. I'd be okay with half of that.I may have to look into government services when I return here after the holidays.
12/12/2008 12:32:23 PM
^ you can work at UPS part time and make $150 a week.
12/12/2008 12:39:13 PM
I was unemployed from June 13 - October 13.
12/12/2008 12:39:59 PM
Damn you people.
12/12/2008 12:40:04 PM
Are we in Detroit?
12/12/2008 12:40:43 PM
12/12/2008 12:42:04 PM
Checking in....and unemployment filings are taking awhile right now with the rise in people without jobs...I've been waiting on a check for a month now. Also I very much agree that $500/wk is hard to live off of when your basic bills are more than that.
12/12/2008 12:44:42 PM
12/12/2008 12:47:36 PM
12/12/2008 12:48:10 PM
However being someone that is used to working 65-80 hours per week...I am going INSANE at home.
12/12/2008 12:50:02 PM
wOOt. I was on unemployment since September, but I just got hired on at Red Hat and am finishing up my first week. Yay for $$$. Sweet place to work too btw!
12/12/2008 12:52:31 PM
12/12/2008 1:02:51 PM
12/12/2008 1:05:17 PM
yes....mtg, car, ins, phone, cable, power, small credit card balence ~2700/mo + gas and food
12/12/2008 1:07:42 PM
damn man, then I could see how it would be tough to live on $500 a week without getting some sort of forbearance.
12/12/2008 1:10:23 PM
yeah my mtg company is working on something there, but yes huge system shock when you go from $3000/wk to 500/wk...and at that arent even getting the checks yet
12/12/2008 1:12:19 PM
you were making $156k a year? What do you do?
12/12/2008 1:16:04 PM
I was a finance manager for a large volume dealership....and the economy is obviously brining havoc among sales based employment.
12/12/2008 1:25:15 PM
I know the feeling, I'm in sales.
12/12/2008 1:26:34 PM
I feel bad for the guys that have built up more debt, I'm lucky that my bills are what they are...I almost bought a second car 6 months ago....what do you sell?
12/12/2008 1:31:56 PM
I actually work for a staffing agency. Sell employment services to businesses in the triad. So my business is kind of up and down. A LOT of companies are on hiring freezes, so that is bad for me. But the companies that are hiring are choosing to use temporary/contract employees so they don't have to pay benefits, which is good for me.My old industry was telecom sales, and they are HURTING right now. No one is buying any of the luxury items, and it's going to be that way for a while.
12/12/2008 1:34:10 PM
well I guess everyone is in the shittier.but my rent is 800 bucks and im paying for health insurance at $300. things like this keep life interesting.maybe
12/12/2008 2:10:56 PM
i'm sorry, but i don't have ANY pity for someone who was making $156k/year and is complaining about $500/week because it doesn't cover their debtsthat is, without a doubt, fucktarded
12/12/2008 2:31:13 PM
my software development team is officially unemployed starting today, though we gave up on filing for hours last friday cus the company ran out of money. good thing is, we've got ~10 leads, just gotta nail one down.
12/12/2008 2:31:29 PM
^^ not asking for any pity, just saying it does in fact suck....they money I've worked hard to put away is slowly disappearing.
12/12/2008 2:40:59 PM
I'm going to be on unemployment in a couple months if the mortgage industry stays this bad. we've had a nice dip in rates, but this will have to last for at least 2-3 months, which rarely happens.
12/12/2008 3:01:55 PM
12/12/2008 3:16:35 PM
thats bullshit.. we should all live like we only make 30k a year no matter how much we make.
12/12/2008 3:22:20 PM
that, there, Clark, is an R-V
12/12/2008 3:28:09 PM
OH YEAH, WELL I LIVE LIKE I ONLY MAKE 20! SO THERE!
