I'm moving into a two bedroom place soon and was looking for some ideas on how to best make use of the extra slace

I wasn't really looking for a 2 bedroom but I found a great deal on a place right next to the pool and tennis courts so I jumped on it

I'm thinking of a hybrid workout room/dressing room

and as pilgrimshoes suggested, a beatin' room

But it would be nice to get some practical suggestions from the rest of you

I don't really need a home office...on the days I work from home its pretty much just my laptop and phone and I call do that wherever

I might have a futon in there but don't want to dedicate the whole space to a bedroom...most people that sleep over will probably be drunken friends anyway and I don't think they'll care

[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 5:29 PM. Reason : the other suggestions are good tho...i'll probably fuck around with several different setups ]

If I had a spare bedroom I would turn it into a workout/make space in my actual bedroom room. Throw a smaller tv in there and a stereo, give yourself some good floor space maybe throw in some sorta equipment like a bowflex or whatever, but thats just me

When I lived alone I had my 2nd bedroom as a office and the 3rd bedroom as an empty room with computer junk in the closet.

Now that I have a roommate I let her share my office space with me and since she's a girl she needed the extra closet space for her clothes so she uses both.

my vote: office. When it was just my office I had a nice little futon that I picked up from World Market so it was a nice place to read a book or whatever.

I always set up my spare bedroom as a guest bedroom/office. Just put a little twin bed in there in case I had people come in from out of town, but also had all my office shit in there.

I have 2 spare rooms now. I have one of them set up as an office, and my original plan was to set up the other one as a mancave. But now I just use it for storage.

dont do the weight room thing unless you are hardcore into it. this will end up as a gathering place for clothes and then more crap followed by more crap....rendering the room worthless after awhile

put some serious thought into what you want the room to do for you

I would make it a library or office and a guest room. But thats my personal preference, you say you don't need an office but for me having a place to keep all my financial type stuff organized is key. Then go buy a cheap twin or double bed, or use the futon, so that guests have a place to stay. Its always nice to be able to offer a room to out of town friends or siblings.

you might not want to fill it up with furniture you'll rarely use. it will be a pain in the ass to move it all and if you have to get a roommate at some point in the future due to unforseen circumstances, it will be a pain in the ass to move it all.

I use it primarily as an extension of the laundry room and we both use it as a storage room. HOWEVER, it's set up as a guest room and has a corner with my art supplies.

We really need a three bedroom place :/ or a place with an actual laundry room...or larger closets/storage space...or we just need to get rid of a lot of excess shit.

I took all my childhood furniture and set up an office that also functions as a spare bedroom. Bookshelves for functional storage, a couple of dressers for clothing spillover (winter clothes, clothes I rarely wear, etc.), desk, and a twin bed.

ive alwayslived in 2 bedroom places either alone or with a gf.

first place i lived, i made it an office/game room. usually just played computer games in there so ppl could watch tv in one place and play games in another without disturbing each other.

newest place i used it as a workout room. had a weight bench in one corner, tv in the other. had enough room for an air mattress when company was here.

I knew a guy who hung mirrors on the ceiling, and put costumes in his closet ... then made his futon a lowrider, covered it in cheetah skin silk, and put in strobe lights and a mirror ball.

If nothing else, it was at least a good conversation room

From a strictly financial perspective -

If you do work from home from time to time, and if you itemize your taxes, this is the way to go because you can take a deduction for a home office.

If you're not up for that, I would rent the room out.

While renting it out sounds like the smartest idea....I would have to go for home gym....In one bedroom I have a guest room....never go in there,in another I have an office....never go in there, and in the other I have a home gym(heavy bag, smith machine, elliptical), and I do use that...

If you trust someone, rent it to a friend and have them pay you. This works great becuase it "lowers" your rent and your friend will probly be a better roomate if you give him a deal. BUT you will have a roomate. My bud and I did this a as shot term solution for a 6 month gap in housing I had.

Key words: trust, good roomate
