Does anyone here have a really nice home theatre setup?

I have a 42 inch plasma (thinking about upgrading to a 52 inch when my tax credit comes), and plenty of room for a home theater in my new house.

I wanna see some pictures of yours so I can steal some ideas!

I also want to get 2 leather home-theater seats that are connected. I found some for 1,000 online...anyone have any suggestions?

I so unbelievably look forward to having a basement so I can sound deaden the hell out of it and fill it with chest crushing subs and full range treatment that'll make your spine dance like Ilya Kuznetsov

I'll probably have to build a house in order to get everything I want out of it...

Well this is totally dependent on what type of sound you are after and how much you want to spend...how big the space is....

^ i did a search as well - none of them are even close to the topic of a home theater setup

i'd argue that the thread could go here or tech talk - i don't see an overwhelming reason for either one...

my point was 1. wrong section, 2. search. i didn't go through and read all of the threads, just thought that would be the best way to start.

How do you know they didn't? The OP isn't really tech-laden. He asked for photos of people (most likely) living rooms.

It's not a living room, it's a home theater.

Probably 10 users have a real one.

^To be fair, the loosest definition would include a living room and strictest a 2.35:1 screen and projector.

avsforum is definitely the place for these types of questions though

I'm amazed Anand went through all that trouble and still used parallel walls.

it's kinda tough to do your ht right when you live in an apt but my setup is as follows

samsung pn50a550
denavr987
infinity tss-750 5.1 bundle
athena technologies wss100 replacing the front L &R speakers of the infinity set
running off my htpc w.BR and hdvd (soon to be replaced by a ps3 and standalone hd dvd player)
monster hts 1600 surge protector(no i didn't pay retail)
Dreamcast

i want to get rid of the infinity set but they perform incredibly well for their size and with me sharing walls all around i don't want the catch the attention of Raleigh's finest. and now looking back at the pic cable ties may not be a bad investment.

both of the recent pictures sure don't fit my definition of a home theater - i'd barely even refer to those sad displays as a movie room - they looks like a typical college living room and not much more

I need to replace my sub-woofer, and am considering http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pc12_plus.cfm however I don't know how well it will perform in my open room design. Anyone with good knowledge of spacial acoustics?

^ I'd avoid those cylinder subs. I've auditioned two models in that line in the past month, and both performed the same: dry, overbearing, and immature (it's kinda like having a car sub in your home theater room). They also wind out at very very high volume levels (magnet loses control of the woofer) - though you'd probably never get 1/3 there in an apartment.

Velodyne is a solid brand. Klipsch used to be - might still be, dunno, haven't listened since they sold out several years ago. Believe it or not, a high end Boston Acoustics is a solid performer as well.

And I'll put out the obvious "avoid Bose and Polk Audio" warning.

Is your issue with that brand or the cylinder style in general? Right now I'm using their speakers with an old Sony subwoofer. I actually have a large space in my house, as the living room/dining room/kitchen are all fairly open to each other, probably about 7200 ft^3.

^ I have only auditioned the cylinder style. Cannot comment on their boxes. My problem is with their cylinder models.

heh - get one of these:

*disclaimer, i know this isn't a true Home theater, but I'm proud of it, i mean if you are going to build a home theater, it should really be it's own room, not in place of your living room. i do however have a long term project of incorporating more surround sound in my basement when i get it finished out, with proper seating, blackout, proper heights, distances, etc. etc. like anand's, but not so high-end

MediaPC - Blu-ray, HD DVD, DVD, Netflix Plug-in, Online Radio, HDTV & FM Tuner & Capture Card, Envy audio card to speakers, streams media (pictures, music, videos) from WHS
Zune - docked portable mp3 player w/ FM radio
Audio Switch to change sound from Zune to MediaPC
Speakers - Logitech Z-2300, 200Watt RMS 2.1 THX-Certified speakers
HDTV - Samsung LN40A650 40" 1080p 120Hz LCD TV
Remote - Logitech Harmony 880 to control it all.

*Benefits - a fully functional living room, with the added bonus of good TV & sound without all the big bulky hardware... besides, there's not enough depth in my bookshelves for true audio hardware, so I'd have to wire an audio rack in the closet and run cabling.

To top it all off I installed a dimmer for the lights in case I don't want it pitch black.

Oh and those were smart solutions for your lack of space problem.

clean set up

Right now I'm running:

Samsung 50" DLP
Pioneer 1016k
4 svs sbs-01(main fronts and rears)
center svs scs-01
sony subwoofer (its old, I think WM series?)

next step is to replace the sub and then replace the fronts(I'd like to replace the fronts with svs's mts series, but they are a little pricey)

Prospero, you need a much larger television for that distance.

For me personally, matching distance to viewing ratio is the most important aspect of getting a home theater setup done properly.

42 inches when you're 12 feet back won't cut it.

yes, i know, but i was kind of afraid it would take over the living room, and a 50" wasn't in the budget. i think i should have at least opted for the 46"
