a friend of ours rented a sander that was the size of a floor buffer to sand some pine floors made out of lumber we sawed for him. If you want to go the do it yourself route, I'm sure you could handle it.

doing it yourself is pretty risky, in all honesty. you need to make sure you have enough thickness in your wood to adequately provide you with a margin of error for mess ups. How old is your house? How many times do you supposed the floors have been refinished to begin with? If you don't know the answer to the second question, then i would go with a professional, IMO. Professionals can do the refinishing with much less wood removed and this can provide you space an opportunity to do it again, should you stay in the house that long. also if you only have a half inch or less between the top layer of wood and the split of the wood (where the notches are that connects the two pieces together then doing it yourself would be ill advised.

DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELFbecause you will fuck it upyou have to keep the sander moving at all times to avoid gouging the floorthis is one of those things that you need to leave to a professional

It is definitely something you can do yourself My mother has refinished floors.

a drum stander is a pain to use without gouging, newer styles are random orbit. Dust is also a huge concern. I would look for someone with a random orbit style sander with an extensive external dust collection system. the cloth bags catch the big particles but that's about all.you may get by with a strip and re wax instead of a full out sanding and recoating. I'm just saying your OMG YOU SHOULDNT EVER!! DO THIS! Leave it to professionals!!1!11one statement is chock full of shit.If a woman with no experience can successfully refinish hardwood floors with no help, and do it well, then I'm inclined to say that this 'omg you're gonna fuck up your floors if you do it yourself!' sentiment is waaaaaaaaaaaay off base. But what do I know? This is only a worthless anecdote.

and im saying that one wrong move with certain equipment will destroy the floordo you know what a pain in the ass it is to replace tongue and groove boards after a floor is installed?hell, if you mom did it, why dont you just rent the equipment and go do ithell, zxappeal is one of the handiest guys on this site and he is looking for someone to do it...that should tell you somethingmaybe my post was a little extreme, but i just dont want to see anyone ruin their floor because they got in over their head

If you do it yourself your house will cave in.I have heard of professionals doing poor jobs that had to be refinished. Regardless of who does the work make sure you carefully inspect it like you would a freshly painted car. All angles, up close, with light reflecting off the surface and without.
