90 Jeep Cherokee. 4.0L, 6cyl. Swapped rear to a Ford 8.8 and regeared to 4.88 with a welded diff. Finally got this thing built up and took it out for a drive, but i've got a real bad grinding noise coming from the rear somewhere when i'm coasting at about 35-40mph. I'm HOPING that it's the e-brake pads (they're pretty much toast and are scrubbing the inside of the rotor I believe). Is there anything else that it COULD be? Do you think it could be a rear diff problem? I had one of the guys at ECGS help me out with the build, so i'm 99.99% confident that it was built/shimmed correctly.

pull the diff cover and look at the ring gear, then report back with the analysis

When we ran the pattern, it looked great on both the drive and coast side...What do you expect me to see?

I dunno exactly what his responsibilities are, but the kid knows his stuff for sure. He was all trying to do the stuff the "right" way using the correct tools (inch-lb torque wrench, micrometer, etc.) and I was like "here, use this ball-peen hammer and measuring tape" We ended up going back to the shop to borrow some tools I'm not saying he knew what he's doing because he was using the right tools, I'm just saying I've heard about this kid's experience with diffs.[Edited on December 4, 2008 at 10:09 AM. Well I would start by checking out the E-brake pads since you suspect that they are not right. You should be able to back off the adjusters, although I will concede that i have never touched the brakes on an 8.8 so im not sure the adjustment mechanism.[Edited on December 4, 2008 at 10:38 AM. Yeah, it's going to be a loooooong night. Fixing e-brakes, finding my leak in my transfer case, mounting roof-rack, installing CD player & CB radio if time permits.

dont forget to put the spare on the roof

Well, i'd like to get away with NOT putting the roofrack on, but I'm heading out with about 10 of my buddies who mostly have only ATV's. I think i've been designated to carry some of their crap.Spare tire's definitely going in the trunk though. I'm not trying to rice this bitch out.

Adjusted my driveshaft angle last night to basically point RIGHT AT the output shaft of my transfer case. I just added 4degree shims to my leafs and whattayouknow. The damn thing doesnt make that noise anymore!I also GREATLY reduced my driveline vibrations. w00t.
