2005 Senior Day versus Maryland was pretty awesome. We won and got bowl eligible. Maryland didn't get to go to a bowl. Mario impaled Hollenbach. Marcus Hudson had two interceptions, one returned for a TD and another to seal the game.

I was curious about our Senior and Homecoming W-L records over the years. I once had a theory that we always lost all our homecoming games. This was based on a 3 or so year homecoming loss streak, but I didn't keep very good track of it.

didn't we beat UVA on homecoming last year?
11/24/2008 9:31:29 PM
^ You are correct.
11/24/2008 9:36:43 PM
Maybe. The theory was born well before PRiv was here and I never really tracked it, it just seemed like it was happening. I haven't seen a site that tracks which games in a season were homecoming, so I never bothered - the perception just remained.[Edited on November 24, 2008 at 9:38 PM. Reason : -]

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/ncsu/story/1308428.htmlKen Tysiac, Staff Writer Comment on this storyRALEIGH - Anthony Hill remembers the disappointment in the eyes of last year's N.C. State seniors after the 37-0 loss in the season finale against Maryland.Just like last year's football team, the Wolfpack needs to win the final game on its schedule to become bowl eligible. N.C. State will play Miami at noon Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium, and Hill said the team has learned from last year's finale."This is a completely different team," said Hill, a senior tight end. "... We're not going to let that happen again. That was completely embarrassing."Different or not, the parallels to last season are unmistakable. In 2007, N.C. State started 1-5 but won four straight after an open date, with the streak culminating in a win over North Carolina. The Wolfpack was 2-6 at this season's open date and has won three in a row since, including last week's 41-10 trouncing of North Carolina. But cornerback DeAndre Morgan said last year's team lost two in a row to close out the season because players were content after winning the rivalry game."Last year a lot of guys felt like that was the only game we needed to win," Morgan said. "And we won it. And a lot of guys started slacking off and things of that nature. But I feel like this year, it's not going to happen like that. The joy that I see on everyone's face, we're going to want to continue this success."N.C. State's Tom O'Brien can recall only one game during his 12-year head coaching career in which he was as disappointed with a team's effort as he was after the Maryland loss last season. That was during a visit to Notre Dame in 1997, his first year at Boston College. He said players treated a special opportunity as if it were just any other game and were trounced 52-20.Shortly after winning Saturday, O'Brien urged his players not to repeat the mistake they made at the end of last season."All this work and everything we've done to get to this point, it would be a shame not to go out and give it your best effort and play the best you can Saturday and give us a chance to win this football game," O'Brien said.N.C. State (5-6, 3-4 ACC) faces an opponent coming off an embarrassing loss of its own. Miami (7-4, 4-3) saw its hopes of playing in the ACC championship game squashed in a 41-23 loss on national television Thursday at Georgia Tech. But Miami won five in a row before that game, and O'Brien said Georgia Tech's game plan on offense is useless to N.C. State because of the Yellow Jackets' unusual triple-option scheme. The Wolfpack might have an edge in motivation, though, because Miami doesn't need to win to become eligible for a bowl."It's how we want to be remembered," said N.C. State senior running back Andre Brown. "We can be remembered as the guys who didn't go to bowl games or as guys who got this thing started, had that momentum and carried it into next year."NOTE: N.C. State starting boundary safety Clem Johnson won't play Saturday because of an ankle injury, O'Brien said.O'Brien said Johnson had been playing his best football of the season against North Carolina when he was injured. Johnson had missed the first four games with a broken jaw and finally was playing the way O'Brien hoped."We were getting play out of that spot at safety that we wanted to get in week one but didn't get until week eleven," O'Brien said. "That will be a huge loss for us."Redshirt freshman Justin Byers and former walk-on Bobby Floyd both will play in Johnson's place.
