cheaper than living in DC, but not too far.

Nothing noteworthy about it though (oh, well not too far from Gettysburg)

I used to live in Hagerstown, it's about 25 mins west of Frederick on 70. Frederick isn't to bad. It has a few malls, nothing crazy. There is a little bit of a night life. You should have a decent time.

I got friends who lived there. They seemed to enjoy it, and there seemed to be a lot of stuff to do there when we visited.

I visited an old friend there several times at his folks' house. It's got some nice historic parts
where there's restaurants, cafes, and a park downtown. Plenty of things to do in the surrounding mountains. Also, DC was within an hour and a half if you want to visit- I think we
drove to the Metro and popped right out on the Mall.

One of my fraternity brothers and his wife live there. And they both commute to DC on a daily basis. Crazy retarded if you ask me.

^I have been commuting to DC for over half a year since i got on a new temp assignment.
I must say, commuting to DC along with everyone else is rough at first but is bearable, esp. with good people in the carpool. You have to leave frederick about 5.30 am and return before 5.00 pm in order to beat the traffic. Reverse commute (DC> Frederick) is much less crowded.

If you will be commissioning the Medimmune plant, you will be working smack in the middle of Fredneck, right between downtown and South Frederick/ Ballenger Creek residential and business park side. From anywhere in Frederick, 15 min commute in heavy traffic.

Pros: 1 hr drive to each DC, Bmore, WV mountains, and PA. Cost of living is cheaper compared to DC metro area. Downtown is fairly lively. Art scene is present. Plenty of watering holes and a few tattoo parlors. Wandering around is safer compared to DC or Bmore. Civil war history all around if you're into that. Plenty of outdoor things to do very close nearby. Flying Dog brewery in town!Dirtiest strip clubs on the east coast an hour away.

Cons: Still a small town. Still more expensive than living in the South. Nothing really to write home about, as LV2state said. Although good amount of young professional people, they do not call the place Fredneck for nothing.

if you are commuting 4 hours a day, you better be making 150k+. (12 hour work day -- at the same rate working only 8 hours a day, that's ~110k, which is decent )

not quite making 150k+ quite yet

then there is a guy at the office that commutes 3hrs each way to PA. Granted, he has a family and kids up there, but gg! Commuting seems to be a neccessary evil for a lot people up here.

I would have moved closer if not the temp nature of the assignment. Also I do like being close to outdoor activities around Frederick as well as WV panhandle

^^ enough to make it worthwhile.

I'd still have to commute to the office if I stayed anywhere fun in DC. It's be more like a 15-20 min commute each way, and I wouldn't have to get up at reduculous time of a day, bit my total time savings would have been more like 1.5 hrs a day. Additional cost of living in DC would have killed off any savings I might have realized on the commute.

Also your $$ calculations are flawed. Your time is only worth that much money if you actually spend it at work. Commute cuts into your personal time, which is FREE (priceless?)

Living in DC WOULD be a blast, as I am reminded every time I hang out there with my buddies. What I'm trying to say, it is not a clear cut decision for most people.

Any recommendations on apartments that allow cats and are not sketchy? I can do cheap just don’t want to deal with crime.

That whole section between the cemetary and Jefferson is hood mixed with some Frederick old-timers in ranch-style housing. I never been to those particular aparments, but I would be inclined to believe that ^^ is right

edit: online reviews sound good though, so i suppose it could be a decent place going for cheap just cause it's in the middle of the hood. I'd say get here firs, live in a hotel for a couple weeks, and scope out a place. I originally was planning to live in Ballenger Creek, but after setting my bearings, I found a nice historic/ old school pad downtown for same price I would have paid for average-looking apartment in the newer residential areas.

from the Frederick county crime mapping GIS all the crime is concentrated south of 70 and west of 270. Fieldpointe is $texas less probably due to age. Also most places have a per month pet fee on top of a non refundable pet deposit. The highest one i saw was 45 per pet per month and 500 non refundable

My dad commutes from Hagerstown to DC and back every day for work. But, he has a company car and a gas card. Doesn't have to pay for any repairs or anything. About the only way I would do that kind of a commute. Well, plus his salary.

I grew up 25 minutes south of Frederick. There's an ice rink. That's really all I have to say about it.

i have actually been pretty happy here in greenville, sc for the past 2 years. Out of all the places I have visited or stayed at in SC, the only places I have really liked were Charleston and Greenville. If this job was in any other part of sc I prob wouldnt have taken it

Yea downtown has been pretty fun since I've been here. Especially once the weather gets nicer, I really enjoy going down during the day on weekends just to walk around or run on the trails after browsing the farmers market vendors. The main thing it is missing for me is an active music scene...luckily its reasonable distance from charlotte, asheville, and columbia...but unluckily that still involves some driving to see bands I want to see.

agreed. i was in high school when the bi-lo center was built. it initially got some pretty good acts, but im not sure what its drawing now. we used to go the handlebar to see regional bands, but greenville isnt a hot stop for most bands.

we would often times go to charlotte or atlanta to see music.

downtown used to be a dump. the westend was all run down, and the only decent spot on main st was around coffee underground and that general area. its completely blown up since ive left.

I lived just south of Frederick in Montgomery County...

It's about an hour from DC on 270... as long as you're not trying to get into DC during rush hour... and you have 70 which takes you to Baltimore... not that you'll ever wanna go there.

More expensive to live there then North Carolina... but much cheaper compared to DC or Montgomery County.

The Orioles have a minor league A club, the Frederick Keys up there and I've seen a few of those games. Nice little stadium.

Antietam, Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry are all worth visiting.

Quote :
"There's an ice rink"

...that and the Keys are really the only reason I ever went up to Frederick... until Montgomery County built/upgraded their rinks into something decent.
