So.

The next Tarantino project seems set for a 2009 release. I'm excited, sounds interesting.

Starring Brad Pitt.

Quote :
"During World War II a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers"

I have the script, can't decide if I want to read it yet or not. Leaning no.

What's with Tarantino and always having a heroine as the lead? He has some issues.

well, Tarantino is a horrible speller for one. but I can see gleams of his genius in the first few pages. it just needs the right actors, and Tarantino has a gift for that.

seriously though

when it looks like brad pitt is the weakest part of your film, i'm probably going to enjoy it

brad pitt left his abilities as an actor on the set of Meet Joe Black or something

but yeah

i want my scalps

This is probably one of the best youtube videos I've ever seen. I found it while trying to find what the fuck vinylbandit's know-it-all ass was talking about.

I've read the first 60 pages or so, and the Basterds themselves have been present for about ten pages (ten minutes).

hmm.

i havent read any reviews personally, but i heard it received less than favorable remarks at Cannes or one of the recent film festivals.

this would never prevent me from seeing it on the big screen however.

The review in The Independent made an interesting point about the lukewarm (to put in mildly) reception at Cannes:
Quote :
"But a similar reception was not to occur. Cannes audiences, perhaps a bit exacting in their standards for Third Reich movies and perhaps jaded after 15 years of Tarantinism, failed to offer much love. A Guardian review declared Inglourious Basterds to be "colossal armour-plated turkey from hell" and concluded that he should "go back to making cheerfully inventive outrageous films like Kill Bill. Because Kill Adolf hasn't worked out." What business does this American rube have making a movie about World War II and the Holocaust? Shouldn't he be confined to his Asia-extreme fetishes and shout-outs to '70s schlock cinema? And shouldn't World War II be left to the morally serious, furrowed-brow makers of films like The Reader and Atonement?"

It's also important to keep in mind that Fahrenheit 9/11 won the Palm d'Or a couple years ago, so I wouldn't put a ton of stock in a film's reception at Cannes.

Because Farenheit 9/11 was a horrible film right? REAL critics hated it, didn't they?

I didn't say it was horrible, I just thought it was a fairly weak polemic and certainly not worthy of the Palm d'Or. And this is completely independent of my political leanings.
