Quote :
"RALEIGH -- Two-time presidential candidate John Edwards is continuing his return to the public stage by debating Republican strategist Karl Rove.

The Commercial Finance Association said the two will hold a point-counterpoint discussion Thursday in San Francisco. They will discuss the election and the economy.

It will be Edwards' second public event since he acknowledged in August that he had an affair back in 2006. His appearance in Indiana on Tuesday did not address the matter.

Thursday's meeting puts an odd and perhaps contentious pair on the same stage. During his presidential campaign, Edwards repeatedly called for President Bush to fire Rove. When Rove resigned from the White House in 2007, Edwards issued a simple statement, saying "Goodbye, good riddance.""

Interesting.

Edwards is going to get raped.

I don't think he's a dumb guy, but Rove surely has more knowledge and experience, and is probably a tiny bit more intelligent too.

i agree. rove hands down.

i rather see edwards/palin.

actually that'd probably be a bad idea, given both of their histories a kid would likely be on the way

^ LOL, that's just not right

Congratulations, Edwards found a guy to debate who is more reviled than he is.

Rove is a behind-the-scenes guy, it's surprising to me that he would get in front of the camera like this.

I recall seeing Rove live at Duke last year. Bottom line - the dude is a freaking genius. Seriously his intelligence is off the charts. You should have seen him mop the floor during the Q&A section of the event. Rove made his case, stuck to his talking points, and carefully crafted every response. He never gave anyone an opening to attack him, staying very calm and collected throughout the night despite dealing with (obviously) a predominantly liberal audience. He even brought a stack of sheets containing his own notes/citations/reference sources on virtually every topic.

Simply put, there was never any doubt who the smartest man in the room was.

Edwards is definitely in over his head. Shoot, Dick Cheney wiped the floor with him in the '04 VP debate, and I've got every reason to think Rove can/will do worse. His only shot is by doing some incredibly in depth prep-work. Still, that's no disrespect to Edwards IMO. The list of comparatively liberal pundits that I think could handle Rove is very VERY short indeed.

Rove is a great strategist, so his performance will be solely based upon his preparation for the debate. I think a few of you are over-estimating his abilities slightly. Granted, he's a smart man, but he's no Obama.

Rove is a shrewd strategist. he's obviously highly intelligent, and is certainly quite well-versed on the conservative slant of most issues.

but as for who's going to win a public debate? I'd have to go with the trial lawyer.

the fact that Rove "mopped up" a varied field of Dookies and local citizens, has absolutely no relation to how he's going to perform in an extended one-on-one debate with a similarly intelligent, and highly polished trial lawyer.

Rove is not a professional debater. I doubt he's really done much "real" debate in his life. He's not going to handle a debate Edwards by carefully sticking to "talking points"

It won't be a blowout, but my money's on Edwards.

Karl Rove will appear smug and short most likely, while Edwards will appear open and challenging.

Rove may be smarter but Edwards is by far the better speaker.

uhhh have you watched any fox news in october/november, no one on tv anywhere has been on tv as much as rove has
and its done a lot of good for his rep, he really seems like a down to earth, intelligent, and fairly wise person
its hard to imagine thats the same guy who is responsible for the bush administration's mistakes
