Has anyone ever pay a heavy fine for getting caught downloading through bittorrent or something like that? How many notice letters to get expelled? I heard most of students, who ever got notice letter, graduated with 2 or 3 letters like that.I just got a notice email for the first time today ...

You won't get expelled, but you will get your resnet access cut off if it happens again. Your worst worry should be getting sued. The minimum cost if you're sued in $3000 unless you fight it. However, you'd have to pay several thousands of dollars to retain a lawyer and you could be hit with a judgment of several hundred thousand dollars if you fight and lose.

i reserve judgment for college students... just because it is kinda rough being a student. but it's pretty sad when i see people who've graduated, hold jobs, and pay taxes are still too cheap to pay a few bucks to see a movie or buy a game.

I support the industries that I enjoy products from...kind of funny how that works, huh?and I think you should be more worried about being expelled for your poor language skills.

Yeah my first one back in college I think I lost resnet access for 2 weeks or something
11/10/2008 6:13:50 PM
^really? I told them i forgot the DVD at my house in Charlotte, and i wanted to watch it. They said alright but don't do it again.
11/10/2008 6:15:13 PM
Yeah first time I had a mp3 server running as a freshman and just told em I didnt know mp3s were illegal to have. Second time I was running an IRC server and told them I was transferring dvds from home to my computer at school and accidentally must have left the IRC server up when I went to class but still lost my resnet for the rest of the semester and had to write a report on why downloading illegal files was bad. At that point I just kinda said screw helping people out and went totally encrypted and passworded ftp and all that jazz and didnt have a problem after that.

FYI, if the RIAA or MPAA decides to sue you, the university will not shield or aid you in any way. This includes student legal services.
11/11/2008 11:31:09 AM
actually, student legal will help you as much as possible. they've already done a ton of work for others who have been busted by the RIAA.the university shields you in the sense that we don't provide any information to the RIAA until we are legally compelled to do so.so let's take an informal poll. we currently don't disallow filesharing, either by policy or by technology. consequently, more people get caught by the RIAA and MPAA etc. would it be better to limit or disallow file sharing so that fewer people receive notices? or is better to maintain an open network and let more people deal with the RIAA? what do you think?
11/11/2008 12:01:57 PM
you probably shouldit will force those that dont know what they are doing to stop and those that know will just use some flavor of encryption to get though which should prevent any problemsblocking it as a service independent of the port is the best way
11/11/2008 12:04:28 PM
how about people pay for their own shit and the RIAA removes DRM so that we're free to use our purchased digital media on any device we deem worthy.
11/11/2008 12:05:32 PM
is it possible to disallow filesharing by default, and force those with actual reasons to use it to ask permission? or would disallowing filesharing be a network wide solution? i don't know the technical steps to limit it, but if they limited it by default it would at the very least prevent people from getting in trouble because of their ignorance to the laws.

Copyright issues are a big concern at high level Universities. UNC recieves about 450 notification letters last year, and about 15 early settlement letters. Early settlement letters have been, on average, about $3500 per individual. It creates a lot of workload on IT security staff. I am in a meeting on Friday to discuss methods of proactively notifying students when we see they are sharing files, before the students end up getting settlement letters from the RIAA/MPAA. Michigan has pioneered something called BAYU which does something very similar. Its not intended to punish students, but let them know that they may be unwillingly or inadvertantly sharing files. apparently this has been very successful in reducing notifications.

In the last round of RIAA lawsuits at NCSU, one of the "John Does" they sued using only an IP address and a date as an identifier turned out to be a network printer.
Wasn't NCSU. It was a set of researchers are University of Washington, who had deliberately broadcast spoofed IP addresses for printers in the torrent streams. Which just proved that the RIAA was only looking for addresses that claimed to be file sharing, and not (as they claimed) actually seeing that the material was available from that IP address before sending a notice.http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/researchers-mpaa-riaa-printer-p2p-file-sharing

^ I misspoke. I looked up the article I remembered reading and in the NCSU case the RIAA subpoenaed information for an IP address that was never assigned.
