I think there may have been a thread on this, I dunno.I watch a lot of movies based on what is said on TWW. A lot of times, the movies turn out really good. For instance, Cannibal Holocaust was one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen, mainly because it was made in the late 70's (I think) and it looks so real and dimented despite limited technology. But sometimes I read threads and I see people all of a sudden jump on a movie bandwagon just because the movie seems original, even though it may suck.Case in point, Funny Games. I have seen several threads on that movie, and most of the reviews say it's really disturbing and in general, a good movie to watch. Well, I watched it. It's not really that disturbing at all. As a matter of fact, it's ridiculously annoying how the main characters refuse to really fight back, and when they do get away, they get caught again. And the scene with the remote control... seriously, wtf. It's like you're kind of in a thriller horror movie, then you step into the Matrix for about 30 seconds. That is not creativity or being cultured, it's absolute bullshit. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I didn't do my book report, and so the night before I'd read part of a book, then bullshit in front of the class and give the old "if you want to find out the ending, you'll have to read the book routine." Not because I didn't want to give away the ending, simply because I had only read half the book and I didn't know what the hell happened at the end. Funny Games is a similar copout. Was it original? Yes. Did it suck really bad? Absolutely. Would I be cultured if I liked it? According to many on TWW standards, yes.Anyway, TWW, I hate you for a little while for making me sit through that bullshit and making me think the whole time it was gonna get better. I will forgive you in time, but I may never fully trust you again.

11/7/2008 4:36:18 PM

11/7/2008 5:28:04 PM
Thank God. It's the "not this shit again guy" who has read every thread and/or has extensive knowledge of the Search feature. The floor is yours my friend.

I bet he just finds it annoying that there are people who feel the need to whine extensively about people having different opinions and how TWW moviewatchers are all elitist assholes (who only like movies to seem "cultured" or some bullshit, whatever your argument is) when we're nothing of the sortand some of us (OMG!) actually like the movies we say we like, not just because it's the thing to doI don't know of anyone who's discussed Funny Games in particular, and I really don't carenor do I understand why you're concerned that other people may like it, since again, people have different opinions on movies[Edited on November 7, 2008 at 6:11 PM. Reason : you made the mistake of trusting TWW for movie recommendations in the first place]

What's more "elitist?"1. Liking Funny Gamesor2. Telling people who like Funny Games that they don't actually like it, but are merely pretending to like it so people will think they're "cultured."
11/7/2008 7:18:06 PM
Am I the only one who didn't think Scarface was any good? Yeah, great performance by Pacino as usual, but there's a crazy amount of hype behind it and I thought it was "ehh."
11/7/2008 8:38:16 PM
I'm pretty sure that nobody except fratty assholes and P. Diddy think Scarface is genuinely great.
11/7/2008 8:39:26 PM
it was good. but it was definitely overrated
11/7/2008 8:39:41 PM
^^ i thought it was decent, however it is ridiculously overrated
11/7/2008 8:41:36 PM
so if i say it's overrated, too, does that mean i'm elitist now? i don't want to be in that category.i'm the anti-elitist elitist.
11/7/2008 9:29:36 PM
Would if be elitist of me to say I loved Dumb and Dumber?
11/7/2008 11:20:54 PM
I haven't seen scarface or funny gamesI'm an elitist.I like when people call others elitist because they don't like movies like transformers and Indiana Jones 4
11/7/2008 11:44:34 PM
I only like Corky Romano so people will think I'm cultured.
11/7/2008 11:51:01 PM
most of the films (that's right, not "movies") i watch are part of the criterion collection.AHA.
11/8/2008 12:10:23 AM
^ omg, you pretentious* fuck*Robocop was once released in a criterion edition
11/8/2008 12:13:22 AM
11/8/2008 12:23:40 AM
I haven't seen Funny Games, but I have heard it was bad, from someone who knows a lot about movies and whose opinion I definitely respect and who definitely "got" it and explained it to me along with why it was still bad.I'll see it eventually.
11/8/2008 12:29:08 AM
I doubt it.
11/8/2008 12:30:42 AM
You doubt what?
11/8/2008 12:53:48 AM
scarface is pretty good but I like most anything with Al Pacino
11/8/2008 5:21:19 AM
Lost in Translation and Ghost World probably fit the description.
11/8/2008 5:52:51 AM

Completely necessary.
11/8/2008 11:02:46 AM
RoboCop is the best movie mentioned in the thread.
11/8/2008 11:48:49 AM
Newer examples of these people include rabid fans of V for Vendetta or Donnie Darko.
11/8/2008 11:58:59 AM
I just wanted to type "schmobocop."
11/8/2008 12:08:44 PM
I'm glad you did.
11/8/2008 12:33:01 PM
11/8/2008 1:51:55 PM
I thought Donnie Darko sucked.
11/8/2008 1:55:50 PM
Donnie Darko is not a great movie. It's really not even a good movie. But it has The Swayze, so I'll let it go.
11/8/2008 2:05:11 PM
heh i assumed this was an 'attn: StillFuchsia' thread and damned if she didn't come out swinging like that's what she assumed too
11/8/2008 9:08:27 PM
^^I enjoyed it, good but not great. But my god is that one of the most overhyped movies ever. Its really at its worst though when people argue to finite details the "correct" interpretation of what happened.[Edited on November 8, 2008 at 9:29 PM. Reason : ]
11/8/2008 9:27:18 PM
I watched the Royal Tenenbaums and just didn't like it. I was mad at myself b/c everyone else kept telling me it was brilliant. So, I watched it again, same reaction. Then again a few years later, thinking maybe I'd third time was a charm, nothing.
11/8/2008 9:48:55 PM
idk why but movies now a days just turn me off...hit me around 2002 or 2003...last new movie i saw was the new indiana jones movie...before that it was like borat and spiderman 3...before that i cant even remember
11/8/2008 9:51:10 PM
i'm really not trying to be an asshole/snob here, but how the fuck could anybody NOT enjoy the royal tenenbaums?
11/8/2008 10:30:24 PM
^It IS pretty fucking dry, and there are plenty of people who don't "get" or who just aren't that amused by dry humor.I for one loved Royal Tenenbaums. But I could totally understand why someone wouldn't.
11/8/2008 11:01:06 PM
This thread is so meta. It's like, people are so cool because they don't like the movies that film hipsters like, or something like that.
11/8/2008 11:18:48 PM
^thats actually kinda opposite of this thread..."film hipsters" like some gay ass shit
