Anyone else a fan of this distinct style of country? Also known as Texas and Oklahoma country. It has a distinct sound and I find it far superior to any pop country crap or Nashville stuff. Its more folksy and blues based with a southern rock flavor and attitude. My brother really got me into this type of music while he lived in Texas. He always sent me MP3 of good songs n bands and stuff. my absolute favorites are Cross Canadian Ragweed and the Randy Rogers band....but special mention goes to Reckless Kelly, Pat Green, Cory Morrow and Jason Boland. any other fans, feel free to list your favorite bands. For those that hate country you might want to look into this sub-genre because it really is different than the pop country or the stuff that is primarily associated with country.

Robert Earl Keen and Roger Creager definitely meet this definition and are great examples of 'Texas Country'

yeah i agree, im not a big Creager fan, but i dig some old school Keen. Whenever i hear the song "Corpus Christi Bay" it reminds me of visiting my bro in Corpus and drinking Shiner Bock with my bro and his blind buddy Marshi also give an honorable mention to Chris Knight, who isnt really Red Dirt country but is more of the of the folk style that I like [Edited on November 7, 2008 at 2:24 AM. I have never really classified the country music more than "classic" -> "90s" -> "new", haha. But I do enjoy Jason Boland, he has some great drinking songs. Pat Green and Randy Rogers Band are pretty good too.

I normally cannot get into country much at all (ESPECIALLY the radio type stuff you are talking about) but I like some older stuff and i LOVE some of Steve Earle's albums. But maybe thats because hes got that folk and bluegrass tinge at times.Transcendental Blues is a great album.[Edited on November 8, 2008 at 12:29 PM. Reason : ]
