I happened to pick up a Halon 1211 bottle (about 20" tall) that hasn't been inspected since 2005 that's coming out of a building that's being torn down. From my understanding, Halon was outlawed a while ago because of the CFC thing... So what should I do with it? The pressure gauge is still in the green and reads a little less than 175 psi. Here's what I've read:http://www.fm200.biz/halon.htm

You are supposed to use halon extinguishers to stop a diesel engine that wont otherwise shut off.

stick the tube up your ass and pull the trigger, then put out a fire next time you fart

^^^ That's what I'm wondering... And if I turn it in, will I get a free replacement? [Edited on November 4, 2008 at 2:54 PM. Reason : . ]

Yeah. I called a fire station and they said I could keep it. The only issue is they don't use 1211 for Halon refills, it's 13 something. And it's really expensive. SO yay , I gotz free halon! It is not illegal to have or use. Just illegal to refill 1211.[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 4:38 PM. Reason : .]

fill it with hydrogen, then place it in someones house and start a fire.

The issue is that halon used to be used in large systems, like restaurants, generators rooms, ships, etc.One little extinguisher isn't that big of a deal.
