CSC 485 isn't listed on School Tool and the ratings for 401 are almost always a 1, meaning everyone hated it. I'm nearing the end of my CSC degree and I seriously HATE programming now, and I want to stay away from it. I need a project course for my degree. I took CCNA 1 and 2 back when I was in high school and I enjoyed networking, so I figured 401 would be a piece of cake, but Dr. Adams stated that I may not like it because its all theoretical and not hands on. 401 is actually going to be available through Distance Ed next semester, so I was thinking about jumping on it, but didn't know if I should just go ahead and take the 485 (which Dr. Adams mentioned was pretty simple). I have 13 hrs of CSC courses this semester and I don't want to overload myself my first semester back on campus (since I've been taking DE courses since my 2nd semester).Any suggestions?

I don't know anything about your degree, but CSC 416 had absolutely no programming in it.It's the exact same class at MA 416, so if you can't find it listed try that.[Edited on October 24, 2008 at 4:36 PM. Reason : ]

I havent taken MA 225, which is a prereq, don't really want to take any courses in my last 2 semesters that I dont have to, but thanks for the suggestionoh and if others didnt notice, computer science is the degree (pffft..lol)[Edited on October 24, 2008 at 4:48 PM. Reason : ]

MA 225 is not a prereq. CSC 226 meets the requirement(I think that's the class). It's a CSC(MA) 416 class. Anyways when I took it, there were a lot of people in there who were CSC without MA 225.

Preq: MA 225 or CSC 226ahhh theres an 'or' in there I missed - thanksohhh and before anyone mentions it - I know 485 isn't part of the project courses like 401 and 402 - I'm just having problems fitting all my CSC classes into my schedule when I've taken all my humanities and only have CSC courses left[Edited on October 24, 2008 at 5:49 PM. Took both classes last spring. Had 401 with Thuente though and it was fairly easy. The homework problems pretty much came from the book and the tests weren't that bad. Definitely theory based but we got to play with Opnet IT Guru to make simulated networks and run tests for the labs.Took 485 with Tharp and it was actually pretty cool. Class was broken into groups and each one had to come up with an idea for a new invention and either prototype it or make a requirements document that someone could take and use to make it themselves. Each member in the group had to give a presentation on an aspect of the project throughout the semester. I'd definitely take it if you can.

If you know which layers IP and TCP/UDP belong to and their basic functionality as well as basic algebra skills, CSC 401 will be a breeze for you.

Rouskas is teaching 401, and his area of expertise is network topics. Real good professor but I wouldn't say it's going to be a breeze

^^ see thats what I figured, considering I took CCNA 1 and 2, I thought it would be no problem at all, but Dr. Adams just made it seem like I wouldn't know anything in the course because in CCNA you have a lot of hands on work, which I really didn't, all of mine was practically theory and I loved it - I wonder who is teaching it through DE, I think this is the first semester they are teaching it DE so at least theres some leway with that

Rouskas is teaching both the in-class section and DE section. They are in fact the same class. The in-class lectures are recorded and made available online to the DE students.
