Here's the short version of the story: Little Girl jumped out of the truck window last Sunday, off balance. She landed on her left side and bounced into the tire with her right side. Her left first rib was broken, and her left eye popped out; she wasn't moving and wouldn't make any noise - but was breathing. Mom and Dad scooped her up and rushed her to the e-vet in Greensboro.

They found bleeding around her right lung, but weren't too concerned about it and said her body would absorb it. Her big problem was that she wouldn't lift herself with her front legs. They got her eye back in with no problem, but she's lost vision in it. She can keep the eye because it has great reflexes. The emergency vet in Greensboro has been absolutely amazing to us and has requested that we leave her with them rather than taking her to a normal vet since she is comfortable and its quiet. They've even cut us a huge deal as far as keeping her there. On top of this, we just found out that she can't urinate or deficate on her own; so they're thinking it may be a spinal lesion.

Now, we have to take her to the NCSU neurologist for an emergency CT scan or MRI on Monday since they can't do anything this weekend. This will tell us where the spinal lesions are and if she can be saved. We would not be going to these extremes if she weren't trying so hard and there weren't some chance of her being ok. We're even looking into making her one of those wheeley-slings (like that Chihuahua uses for his missing hind legs) for her front legs if she is able to have a surgery that will then make her then need rehab (which the vet was showing us how to do.) She is not paralyzed in her front legs, she moves them, just is uncoordinated and can't support her weight.

Now, I am wondering if there are any outlets to get help paying for this? You don't know if you don't ask, and I figured with the students on here, they'd know what goes on over there and can tell me what to expect.

Even so, there have been a couple cases on here where people asked for help paying for their pets life, and money was raised for them. But I'm not asking for that.

The truck was not stopped and it all happened in a split second. She was very close to getting run over, but thank God she didn't. Its not like we encouraged her or gave her no choice but to jump.

But since we're going down this path...aside from the fact that you spent enough time with it to form a bond, what's the difference between a deer that's dumb enough to get shot by you and a dog dumb enough to jump from a moving vehicle?

I'm not looking to leach, people donate money to pet foundations all the time for a reason - for people who need it to use it!

I'm not saying she's not going to get the treatment, we'll make a way to do it. It just doesn't hurt to ask.

I know this is kind of dorky, but when we found my cat has shattered his pelvis (still no idea HOW he did it ) I asked for help on my blog and lots of people helped out. Thanks to them we were able to save his life

Our 10 year old cat was hit by a garbage truck in front of our house (unbeknown to us at the time) and it took her days to drag her little body up to our front porch where we eventually found her, nearly dead. When we took her to the e-Vet she needed a bilateral hip replacement-- which cost $3000. We did it and had to set up a payment plan with the vet but they were happy to accommodate us in that regard.

Perhaps discuss the finances with the vet's administrative staff and see if you can't come up with an arrangement?

benz240: all this has been considered, and even asked all the vets opinion and they all said go have the exam done. We would not be doing anything to make her suffer, we would have had her put down already if it was advised. We're just talking about an exam right now, not surgery yet.

I have been able to find a lot of information, but unfortunately, if you're not on TANF or Food Stamps or SSI there's not much help. I have applied for a few things I was eligible for, just waiting.

^ I will definitely be discussing this with the NCSU vet, maybe they'll be more willing to help a NCSU student.

This thread breaks my heart. My finally talked me into getting a dog. The last one I had was over 10 years ago and we had to put her down because of a massive malignant lesion on one of her legs. I wasn't even bonded that well with her, but having to put her to sleep was one of the most difficult things I've ever done.

I've had my little one for about 3 months now, and I couldn't imagine having to part with her, but at this point, you are just going to have to suck it up and let her go. The pain will be immense, but you'll always have the memories and there are plenty of other dogs in need of rescue out there that should quickly help you to move on.

She's not in as much pain as some of you think. She seems quite comfortable. We went today and took Tonka with us... and she was absolutely heartwarming! She was hopping around with her back feet, turning every which way looking for either Tonka or my Dad when they would be walking around. It was very hope-renewing and refreshing to see her like this. We're taking her in the morning for an emergency neurologist visit. We'll just have to see from there.

Oh, and she was passing major gas and her belly was rumbling like crazy, so hopefully she'll get to poo today!

Good news! We had the MRI done yesterday and she does not need surgery! Thank God! She just needs time to heal and get better on her own. She's not in a lot of pain, and will not be in permanent pain at all. She won't be bouncing off the furniture or anything of that nature, but she's going to have a good quality of life. She still can't stand on her front legs, they're not load bearing just yet... but with medication, rest, and therapy she'll get it on her own. Still gonna figure out how to make one of those front-end wheely things, if necessary. They make them for rears, but never been one for the front end.

^^you have no idea what you are talking about. the field of veterinary analgesia has vastly improved within the past 10 years. no responsible veterinarian would have let her suffer for days to let her get an MRI .

^^^^Did you read the first post? The dog couldn't lift itself. Her eye popped out...they got it back in, but she can't see. There was bleeding around her lung but the body absorbed it. They were talking about giving her wheels in order for her to maintain mobility. That's suffering. Just cause vets have introduced pain management into the mix, it doesn't mean the animal isn't suffering.

And when I said the shit was abusive...I didn't mean it was abusive to the dog. I meant that it was abusive to the readers. And it's not just this one post. There've been others like it, and that's why I'm responding this way. If you need advice, fine, I understand, for some idiotic reason, some people turn to TWW for advice, but I don't think people should post pictures of their suffering animals. Why do people do that shit?

And I know that, once again, I'm likely all by myself on this issue. If not, I'm certainly the only person dorky enough to post about it...it's a compulsion...and of all the compulsions in all the world, opinionated internet posting is almost healthy.

The pictures add credibility to her story, if nothing else, and the original post was just short of asking for money to help the dog. plenty of other threads of that nature have been made without significant backlash. Somebody posted about their puppy having its eyeball punctured and posted a picture of the puppy after the eye was removed without any negative comment. If you had found bethaleigh's dog to have aesthetic appeal, perhaps you would have found "cute" that she was trying to save it and show everyone.
