Holy shit, didn't see this one coming. Looks like they stripped down Civ 4 and put Colonization on it. Its available in stores and on Steam for $30. If they have now remade this and Pirates, perhaps Alpha Centauri isn't far behind.[Edited on September 24, 2008 at 12:26 PM. Reason : ]

Must... resist... temptation... can't... jeopardize... grad school...

I loved the original, spent hundreds of hours playing it the since it came out over a decade ago... not sure about this incarnation of it though... Any comments on it?
9/24/2008 12:37:28 PM
Oh shit download the original to see the comparison. I understand they play almost the same. I can't wait. The original was out in 1994 and I have played it quite a bit every year since then. Its a timeless game. It taught me a lot about the Founding Fathers, and in school I knew who some of the smaller names in colonizing the New World were before anybody else had a clue. Funny when I told my teachers I learned about them from a damn game! Ytsejam, the reviews have been really good for this. Metacritic is averaging 82 right now.http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/sidmeierscivilization4colonization[Edited on September 24, 2008 at 12:42 PM. Reason : ]

http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/06/civilization-iv.htmlWhat a fucking douche. He's outraged that Sid would make a game about an important part of our history?!? Maybe if he FUCKING PLAYED IT (the new or original) he would know that its not about going to Africa and hauling the Afrikans in shitty boats to the New World to grow sugar. Slaves are a SMALL component of the game and can be educated right out of slavery and into more productive jobs.As for enslaving the Indians, you could attack them. But it knocked off your score and made all of the other Indians distrust you more. So I don't see how this is promoting any sort of awful morality or whitewashing over it. You can do whatever you want in the game, but there are penalties for slaughtering the Indians.[Edited on September 24, 2008 at 1:00 PM. Reason : ]

hmmm, never played this, but I LOVED Civ I-III and HATED Civ IV (just too much shit to learn, cant dedicate the time to it like I could for the original ones). So is this more like Civ I-III or IV?
9/24/2008 1:00:42 PM
At least it isn't concentration camp tycoon.
9/24/2008 1:02:45 PM
Its quite a bit different actually. Follow this link to download the original:http://www.colonizationfans.com/It plays really well, even on Vista/XP machines.
9/24/2008 1:03:07 PM
^^ hahaha^ quite different from what? Civ IV? or the original Colonization?[Edited on September 24, 2008 at 1:03 PM. Reason : d]

my roommate has this....and everytime i see him play it ........i........want
9/24/2008 1:56:17 PM
You were asking if it was like Civilization. I was saying it is quite different from Civ, but very much like old Colonization. Colonization was actually made by Brian Reynolds, as well as Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri. If you liked either of them, you will probably like this. Sid was only on retainer with Microprose when they were made so that they could use his name. All the redesigns that went on are due to Brian Reynolds. Sid got the games back under his control with Civ 3 when Firaxis bought the Civ franchise.Reynolds is now CEO and Creative Director of Big Huge Games and made Rise of Nations.
9/24/2008 3:22:49 PM
so would you say its more or less complicated than Civ IV?
9/24/2008 3:39:35 PM
A lot less complicated. It doesn't span a massive time period (all of human history vs a couple hundred years) and would focus on far different stuff. Colonization was an economic/military/diplomacy game. It has no tech tree. You get founding fathers through liberty bell production, who give you benefits and bonuses. Your people are mostly gotten through European religious unrest causing immigration. You can increase religious production, which adds to the unrest and random people who wish to go to the New World. You can recruit or purchase people as well, though this costs money.Exploration is very similar to Civ. You find the bonus boxes and get certain random events triggered, both good and bad. The biggest difference is with the Indian nations. Your scouts can enter them, and learn about nearby lands or be given gold. You can send untrained citizens to an Indian village and they can train them. You can send missionaries to Indian cities, which increase the chances that Indian converts will join your nearest city. It also makes them happier with you, which means they will attack you less frequently, and bring you more supplies as a sign of good will. This is just a brief glimpse into it. Its very indepth, but quite easier than the Civ 4 depth of game.
9/24/2008 4:51:16 PM
hmm, might give it a shot
9/24/2008 5:08:31 PM
Ohmy God
9/24/2008 6:02:05 PM
Man, this game has an insanely steep learning curve. I really want to like this game but even at the easiest level and smallest map size there's just too much to handle for new players. I guess I might try to give it another shot when I have a few hours to spend, but for right now it just seems too epic to jump into.
9/24/2008 7:38:03 PM
how do those people fit in the houses?
9/24/2008 8:03:07 PM
ok, I am downloading this fucker... better not suck
9/24/2008 8:40:52 PM
yeah, I was instantly lose
9/24/2008 9:38:19 PM
I had a blast this evening. Of course I have the fucking advantage of playing the original, so a lot of it is still similar. Different layouts and shit, so I'm still getting adjusted, but holy crap, this is a great remake of Colonization so far.WTF are ya'll getting stuck on, and are you downloading the old school one, or the new game? Seriously, play the old one for a couple hours and it should really help you out to understand most of the basics.
9/24/2008 10:36:33 PM
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice
9/25/2008 9:30:55 AM
Did anybody else notice the beautiful reflective/rippled water effects they have added? I almost wish this was just a Civ4 mod that would update the orignal game to add this into it. Its so pretty.
9/25/2008 12:47:30 PM
man, I got lost on all of it... I didnt even know which way to sail at first
9/25/2008 1:40:36 PM
is there a video tutorial anywhere? i didn't see one in game, just a huge help file.
9/25/2008 1:43:05 PM
Go west, young man.
9/25/2008 1:43:22 PM
well, if it was actual earth that would have been obvious, but with it creating a random world, I had no idea
9/25/2008 2:32:11 PM
Its random, but its still based on the actual dynamics of the New World.
9/25/2008 3:57:48 PM
shit needs some tutorialno idea what all those buttons meanI assume you could attack a ship by moving onto the same square with your ship but apparently not
9/25/2008 4:31:57 PM
wow just got my ass kicked by indians. gg.
9/25/2008 4:50:21 PM
I have not gotten that far into it yet with ship to ship fighting. I'm guessing you must have declared war with that foreign country before you can engage in ship to ship combat. Otherwise you will just sail right past each other. That is very similar to Civ 4.
9/25/2008 5:06:17 PM
ok i just figured out the whole automating the economy thing (incredible time saver) and i was actually able to spend some time expanding and taking over a few things.
9/25/2008 7:40:10 PM
I still haven't trusted the economic automation systems, yet. Too much of a micromanager.Played a lot more last night. Got a privateer and did some ship to ship combat. Having a good time so far. Really loving the game. The Continental Congress/Founding Fathers is very different though.
9/26/2008 8:28:02 AM
Well I played most of the weekend, and have kinda hit a fucking brick wall. I like to micromanage, but until I get the whole thing down really good, I am having to micromanage too damn much. My main complaint is that the fucking Custom House is gone from C4C. This made it so much easier to deal with large cargo later in the game, as you could just allow the Custom House to take it all and turn it into gold. Now I'm having to fuck with multiple ships, lots of wagon trains, etc. all delivering cargo to my primary port city, and then shipping it back to Europe. Plus the tax rate rolls up REALLY fast this time, and if you throw a Tax Party, then there is no way to buy off the embargo down the road. I do like that trading with foreign powers and the Indian nations is more developed. That was quite a bitch in the original game. But it still leaves me micromanaging wagons and ships to buy and sell shit, when at that point in the game, I want the economy to become self-sustaining so I can deal with troop allocations and developments for the WoI.What are your thoughts after a weekend with this baby? I think it will be real good once they get some patches up. Also I have heard that they are going to be adding Pirates to one of the upcoming patches, which I think is a realistic consideration that has been overlooked by the game so far.
9/28/2008 10:19:53 PM
How do I know what goods different native tribes are interested in?Also, dunno if I like being on a timer...it seems too short, or maybe I just suck. I can barely create a decent sized army in that time.[Edited on September 29, 2008 at 1:10 PM. Reason : ]
9/29/2008 1:08:30 PM
I set it on the epic game. You can see what the Indian tribes each want if you send a scout. This is also a good way to pick up money in the beginning of the game, as you can send your scout to talk to the Indians and they will sometimes give them gold or beads.
9/29/2008 7:35:47 PM
you owe me $30 Mr. Hawk
9/29/2008 7:43:20 PM
I played some Sunday, it isn't nearly as good as the original, which I still have on my hard drive. Education is screwed up. After a few colonists, the time it takes to train becomes ridonkulous. (99turns? srsly?)Custom House is out, but the last warehouse upgrade gives you a shitty version of it. REF is borked. First attempt at independence and the King had over 80 artillery alone(!), and plenty of Infantry and Dragoons to back it up. Crazy. Tax goes up to fast, and to a much higher percentage. They took away tile types, no more prairie or savanna. There are a couple other issues that bug me, but these are the ones of the top of my head.
9/29/2008 7:57:55 PM
^I completely agree. I am having fun, but it needs to be patched pretty seriously.Sorry if your not happy with it now, but be patient. Firaxis usually gets shit straight, and I have faith that they will get a patch out to fix this. If you look online there are already some mods that fix these problems. I have one mod that gives you original Col music redone, and another that handles some of the tax/REF/etc. issues.
9/30/2008 8:08:13 AM
interesting, i might wait till you guys think a patch has ironed out some of these issues before i get it, but i definitely will at some point
9/30/2008 2:01:10 PM
got it from my roommate....played it once tonight.....and i got my ass kicked. Man do i have alot to learn
9/30/2008 10:02:59 PM
I can't do anything when i play on the regular timeline. I have to put it on marathon to do anything worthwhile.
