Pull spring.
Watch shit fall apart.
Stare for 20 minutes.
Put back together.
Adjust.

forget about brake spring tools. use needle nose vice grips and a pinch bar.

I hate em.

Oh I love drum brakes. There simple too, if they piss you off then you need to replace them on about 100 more vehicles and it will become much less stressful. only reason I had to ask about this is because I couldnt remember the order. Only reason that is an issue is because someone put rear brakes on this truck about a week ago and the parking brake doesnt work, usually that happens when some idiot fucks up and puts the shoes on backwards.

hah

i did the rear drums on my civic.. couldnt get that one clip off. , plus it had a decent bit of pad left compared to the other pad. so i left it on there.

it needs adjusting. but ill be damned if im opening up that drum unless i have to

just about all drums are self adjusting but self adjusting isnt as good as really adjusting them.

some you can access the star wheel from the back of the backing plate.

i've only had a few that i couldn't get to self adjust "good enough" on their own though. i find that 30mph bouncing off the rev limiter in reverse and slamming on brakes a few times typically auto adjusts all but the most stubborn ones.

that wont do shit if the shoes are on backwards though, and the hardware is only half connected like I have found mine to be

yeah, when i got my Cutlass back in highschool, i found that someone had put the shoes on backwards.

i hate changing brake shoes. i've only done it once, and i had help from my grandfather. i remember it to be kind of an asspain, though.

the drums on my Fourtrax 200 were really easy to adjust, though. i'll give them that.

If you want to become proficient at drum brakes buy a car with drums on the front wheels. You'll either learn or go in the ditch.

My old ford truck had front drums.

My '64 Dodge 330 had front drums.

My '74 Volks Super Beetle had front drums (as do ALL US models, dammit).

I learned how to do drum brakes when I was 15...on that damn Ford truck. Completely redid them when I turned 16.

Most drum brakes are self-energizing, meaning that the lead shoe (front one) actually functions like a sprag in a one-way clutch assembly. Faster rotation=more braking force. This is why the lead shoe has more friction area.

Self adjusters rarely work like they should. They actually require too much damn slack to adjust properly, and they always seem to seize up from corrosion, etc. I prefer to adjust 'em manually every coupla months. They stay a lot tighter that way.

do note there is a left and right side star wheel adjuster. if you switch them your pedal will be softer than charmin.

FTW. Baonest, I had a really weird noise coming from my right rear drum brake and did exactly what BBR suggested (only took it to about 15mph though hah, not as badass as BBR). Shut that bastard right up

OK finally got around to this tonight, sure enough, dougs service center fucked up when replacing the shoes, installed them backwards (so R on L and vice versa), never hooked up the adjuster cable, and butchered a couple springs. New shoes, hardware kit, 80g to the drums, and bled the old black, vinegar fluid out and things are working much better. Still no proper parking brake, but tomorrow I will try the 30mph in reverse trick and report back.

Still had to manual adjust to get it close, then went to some new construction and tightened it up the reverse way. Parking brake is good now. Threw some new pads on the front too, it should be a LOT better towing the car hauler now.

you'll have to excuse him, he's used to the crank brakes on his walmart bike. he's also had a bad experience with a tree pulling out in front of him and not being able to stop.

had to do a set on a 2006 silverado a few months back. the entire job took about 30 minutes until I got to the passenger side brake cable. took me an hour to pull the cable into the tab. I fucking hate those things.

^^^AHAHA that is the new Ragged/slowblack96 theme pic... someone do a funny chop on it.

i've got a pair of right angle needle noses that are nice for drums on the rare occasion i'm forced to screw with them.
