Quote :
"CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Thursday he would, if elected, fire U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox for failing in his oversight of Wall Street.

"The Chairman of the SEC serves at the appointment of the president and in my view has betrayed the public's trust," McCain told a rally in the electoral battleground state of Iowa. "If I were president today, I would fire him."

The comments by McCain, who portrays himself as a maverick in his bid for the White House, contrasted with the view of fellow Republican President George W. Bush, who appointed Cox to the SEC post in 2005.

...

He criticized the SEC for abandoning the "uptick rule" which only allowed short sales when the last sale price was higher than the previous price.

"Speculators pounded the shares of even good companies into the ground," said McCain.

^^ yep. it seems that the electorate is now so stupid and ignorant that the contest has to be boiled down into a few buzzwords, such as "change", "maverick", or in the case of 2004, "flip-flopper".

McCain's claim here is pure bullshit. his against regulation in any form and is attempting to pull off some sort of populist message, but it won't fly.

^ It could fly, but McCain's 2 past incidents where he claims he's not that good with economic issues are going to come back and haunt him.

In any case, i'm not convinced the short uptick rule is what caused the credit crunch we're experiencing, so I don't see why he's harping on that.

^ That was posted just 2 posts above you.

That's a lame line of attack though, i'm sure if the president wanted to, he could force out the SEC chairman without repercussion, if it was warranted.

so does that mean mccain is going to fire his economic adviser who pushed for the deregulation that set us on this course? or maybe fire the 83 wall street lobbyists who work for his campaign?

want to get rid of lobbyists?^

then stop buying products from the companies that pay for them.

or just buy more from the companies that support the lobbyist you like best

in the end you'll get more done in your life by following that, than any vote you'll ever make.

No, he simply wouldnt' call for it in the first place jackass, because he's not going to score ridiculous political points to make a headline, over dumbing down a fucked up situation like the economy to blame one man and somehow display 'leadership' even if it has nothing to do with fixing the problem (a la gas tax holiday, etc)

i'm afraid thats exactly what his entire campaign has been based on...blaming one man (GWB) for a bunch of problems and promising to fix them...he's scored many, many political points for it

That man happens to be responsible at the executive position of 8 years of declining prestige, economy, and global position of America.

He's one of the worst presidents in the history of the United States dude....if you can't context your presidential run as a direct contrast and how you plan on changing the direction of all the bullshit that has happened over this near decade what the hell are you running for?

i'm just pointing out that Obama WOULD and DOES "dumb down a fucked up situation by blaming one man"...he's not some superman who is above that shit

and i would try to convince you of the fact that only time will tell how GWB fares as a president (just like it takes time to fully assess every president), but i wont waste my time

haha, although usually true in Dubya's case, I'm feeling pretty confident that the turd will still stink later on in history.

I never said Obama is superman but I think he chooses his battles and opens his mouth with a longer more patient stretch goal in mind. Thats why I think he has a better temperament to lead the country is all. Simple reasoning but effective.

You can't retort that. I know you are republican masking as zen neutral independent twister, but you cant make yourself feel good by making ME somehow feel less convicted about Obama being the best of the field out there.

Do I think he's amazing or some beyond the pale politician? No. But I think he's an effective candidate with the 'right stuff' to take this job. Nothing more, nothing less. Stop the reverence accusation.

You do realize that when asked if he would fire the SEC chairman, Obama instead answered that he would "fire the policies of GWB," right? So, not only would Obama *shocker* not answer the question, he then proceeded to *shocker* blame one man. such a fucking sheep

You're right. Obama just blames an "economic philosophy" that has been in place for "8 years". Without ever explaining how that philosophy led to this mess or who was actually behind implementing it into policy. Hmmm the past 8 years? I wonder who he's talking about. hahhaa Partisan political bullshit.

^ not even one administration. When you hear Paul Krugman saying Phil Gramm helped cause this mess (I guess trying to score political points against John McCain), he's referring to legislation passed back in *1999*! As if Gramm was the only person in the Senate and Bill Clinton (who I love) was not in the White House.

The fact is that this is the end result of errors going back for decades. There is plenty of blame to go around, so much so I really don't think anyone can or should be held responsible. The economy is a complex system governed by a handful of people with limited information (and limited understanding) of the facts involved. It is simply re-fucking-diculous to try and blame this on Bush, or McCain, or the SEC chairman.

And you should feel stupid for buying into any story of the sort.

And you thought his campaign couldn't get any more ridiculous.

Too bad John McCain wouldn't have the authority to fire the SEC Chairman if he were President

Obama can't yet b/c he has to consult with his "braintrust", AKA AXLEROD HASN'T WRITTEN HIS SPEECH ON IT YET.
