know of anything like this? i want to install it on the drive and let it index the contents once and then whenever i run it, be ready to show the results, regardless of what computer i'm running it from

any program that lets you store the indexes on the disk... (google)

You can use google desktop to do this. It will run standalone on a removable HDD.
