Well I finally bit the bullet.Next Monday and Tuesday I will be out on the track for 8 hours a day doing HPDE's. Any advice from all you guys who are regulars? What to bring or not, pointers, etc? I have my big prep sheet from the event organizers that covers a ton of stuff, but I'm sure there are some pearls of wisdom from the Garage.

What club are you going with? Try to get a ride before your first session and don't try too hard.

wait, 8 hours of track time? are you the only one out there? is this a two day event?1. LEAVE YOUR EGO AT HOME. you're gonna get run by little civics and ford focus' all day. its no big deal (like ahmet said, dont try to hard or you'll end up in a wall or off the track. and dont get all pissy if you do spin out, it happend to almost everyone)2. TAKE PLENTY OF WATER TO DRINK...AND SNACKS3. clean out your car, tools, spare parts, jack/stands4. oil and other fluids, brakes and stuff. check your oil and bleed your brakes after each run (you probably dont have to, but might as well, you'll have enough time)you can find little checklists online on what to look for. 5. if you can find and fix your flaws as you're going through the day, then thats a good thing.6. dont be afraid to get a different instructor or even ride with bunch of different onestake a tent and a seat. like i mentioned before (depending on how many people are there) you'll have a lot of time between runs.[Edited on September 12, 2008 at 7:57 AM. What kind of brake pads do you run on the street? Might want to consider swapping them out for something more track oriented.-flush your coolant system-bleed your brakes/change out brake fluidYeah, definitely drive at your own pace and comfort level. At the only track event I've been to I whipped up on an Evo But its all about you, not anyone else.[Edited on September 12, 2008 at 8:01 AM. Reason : k]

tr00..after 1 or 2 events, you'll see what you need to modify. its good to run stock, then you can see improvements as you ad parts. brakes--susp--power[Edited on September 12, 2008 at 8:06 AM. Reason : but yeah, if you can get a decent pad/fluid setup before the event. that'll do ]

ive seen it happen many of times.once was this car in front of me was trying to catch another car, the one in front was another hype R, dont remember what the car in front of him was. but you could see him just trying hard. he eventually spun at the last turn at VIR. same event we had a practice black flag, and some doof in a SE-R wasnt paying attn, he was paying attn to me and nearly rear ended me. the best part was that the instructor saw everything and called him out during class.oh and drive your own line, dont follow anyone else. 'specially since you've got a wacked configed car, lol, you're gonna need different lines in wet and dry.and you might want it to be a bit wet, maybe on your second day, the last 1-2 sessions. people always get mad when it rains, but rain is part of everyday life, and part of racing, so its good to know how to drive during rain. and it will be good with your car also.[Edited on September 12, 2008 at 10:56 AM. most clubs require you to get a tech inspection ahead of time.the first couple of laps are warm up laps. use them properly. i went to one hpde and the only time i spun was the first lap on green.. my first session after my instructor signed off on me. which brings me to the next piece of advice... DONT LIFT [Edited on September 12, 2008 at 11:32 AM. Reason : .]

^oh yeah, definitely don't lift! I had to go in once and swap brake pads during a HPDE. I was pissed about it b/c I was missing out on my last lap session. When the pads were on I hurried onto the track and forgot about 1/2 of what I'd learned that day. On the 2nd to last turn I lifted in the wrong place, whoooooops got her sideways at 70mph Recovered though, hehehe.

For what it's worth, I've never done an HPDE but I have twice done parade laps at VIR on the full course, and once was directly behind the Pace car (CTS-V) in my turbo Rx-7. I think the hardest thing is braking. You've gotta have a lot of balls (the mechanical health of your vehicle is on the line, also your ego is fighting any sensible decisions you want to make) and a lot of skill to brake at the right time and heel-toe into the next corner, especially coming off the braking zones from the straights.

see, thats the best part.well all know, on paper, an evo would rip a lot of cars apart.but when you run a car that is 10X the cost of yours.. it feels nice. although you know that equal drivers, you'd get romped. but still.honda 4 life y0!

There was a new Evo, and a 2000-2001 Impreza WRX out on the track today. They got slaughtered by almost everything else on the track.About 80% of the cars were Acura NSX's, with one full race-prepped, and two running monsterous superchargers. The race prepped on was putting something like 380hp to the wheels, and the two monsters were dynoed at 440 and 490. Needless to say, they were fucking FAST. Mr. race prep passed me on lap 2 of my very very first session ever, and then again on lap 10 or 12. flyiiiingThe only "shitty" cars that did outstandingly well were an old Porsche 911, and an 07 Nissan 350z, both drivers were really fucking good and ran down a lot of cars.
