Yeah, let's have a ticket with a bunch of war-mongering, reckless candidates with the evangelical nation of America as the wind behind their backs.

I'm legitimately frightened.

The sad thing is this will probably help her out overall.

Also, does there really need to be so many threads related to the 08 election? I'm sure this could have been put in one of the others...

I notice you just edited out the part where Palin points out that she was responding within the context of NATO.

Quote :
"When Gibson said if under the NATO treaty, the United States would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help. "

Collective defense is pretty much the whole point of NATO. If Georgia ever comes "under the NATO treaty," we will be obligated by our agreement to respond with military action. It doesn't matter whether you're a hawk or a dove, that's the deal we made. I suppose a fanatically dovish president could pull out of NATO, which may be the only thing worse than following through with our obligation.

Sorry but she never says 'if Georgia is a NATO country'...that's why I pulled that quote out.

Also Palin said Russia was "unprovoked" in Georgia - even the Georgian government admitted that they took military actions in S. Osettia immediately before the Russian military incursion. To say that they were "unprovoked" contradicts their own position as well as comes off as saber rattling hawk. Big surprise.

Kainen, you fucking dipshit. She didnt need to say 'If Georgia were a Nato country'. That was the fucking question.

"Palin told Charles Gibson of ABC News that she'd favor including Georgia and Ukraine, both former Soviet republics, in NATO despite opposition by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Asked whether the United States would have to go to war with Russia if it invaded Georgia, and the country was part of NATO, Palin said: "Perhaps so."

per wiki:
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO); French: Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord (OTAN); (also called the North Atlantic Alliance, the Atlantic Alliance, or the Western Alliance) is a military alliance established by the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949. The NATO headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium, [3] and the organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party.

Palin has created a big pile of shit for Obama to step in. She answered the question correctly as to our commitment to NATO countries. If Obama counters that, it will weaken even further more his foreign policy knowledge, as well as his desires to follow through with America's international commitments.

We should have gone into Africa along time ago. Sadly, Africa is probably the only place left in the world were the USA is generally liked. Hell, a vast majority of Liberians wanted us to come in, with our military, and stop the war in that country. That sentiment is generally shared by a lot of other African nationalities that have seen bloody wars/civil wars. Sadly, most of sub-Saharan Africa has no oil.

She didnt say it would be unilateral force. In fact, since the question was in context to NATO , I would say that a collective force is automatically inferred, unless you are just looking for another reason to hate her.

btw. keep up this palin hate. you democrats are beside yourselves. you have no idea what to do about her. all you do is react violently and show your true colors on a daily basis.

Maybe Africa is the only place in the world where we are generally liked because we haven't been as involved there.

Sure, they ask for us. Once we started "going in" as we have in other places, in a few years, they would feel the same as the rest of the world does.

Because we go into Europe so often, that must be why we are hated there the most... right.

More likely, it's because Africans have just recently experienced what real imperialism is, and realize, contrary to some peoples beliefs, America is not a imperialist state.

And we are in Africa now, in larger forces than probably 99% of America realizes. Yet they don't hate us, in fact the Military's work in Africa has probably done a lot to improve our image there.

So McCain has agreed to put Obama on his cabinet, and Palin is willing to go to war with Russia over a NATO backed Georgia.

Some of you are worried about this election, but I'm not. You will see the Republican bump reduce back into the republican slump that we know it is.

The Republican ticket has now entered bargaining mode, the first sign of troubles ahead.

^Well, it's tough to figure out who is better prepared. The candidate who:

thinks Iraq borders Pakistan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC0Y7zMcn_4

OR

the one who thinks Al-Qaeda and Iran are working together - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkfM7z0-Vdg

"Experience" in the military and in foreign affairs over the last 30 years is exactly what I don't want. That "experience" only teaches them how to waste money and American lives on needless, stupid wars like Vietnam, the first Gulf War, and now Iraq, along with needless, stupid interventions like Grenada, Kosovo, Somalia, El Salvador, etc.

Anybody who was involved with any of those is trained to make bad decisions, and is not someone I want getting us into more conflicts just like them.

when we find that combination, let me know.

right now i see a

a man who earned his position as an officer by being one of the last five in his class, and went on to further exemplify his poor classroom naval training by crashing 5 expensive naval planes and managing to get himself captured the last time. who then became a congressman and became entrenched with lobbyist and surrounded by scandals (i.e. keating 5) and demonstrated his true colors when be became a reformed reformer once he realized he lost the past election...and a vice president whose notable achievements in foreign policy that are trumpeted include "being really close in proximity to russia"

^I hadn't heard he crashed 5 planes, just the one that was shot down. So I looked it up on factcheck.org and they said:

Quote :
"McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them, both due to engine failure. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when hit by a missile fired accidentally from another plane, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi. There's no evidence that any of the four destroyed planes were lost to pilot error.

A fifth alleged "crash" turns out to be a misinterpretation of a biographer's description of a flight accident that did not result in the loss of the aircraft. More about that later."

All of which sounds like extremely shitty luck, not necessarily poor training.

He is just reciting the same piece of shameful garbage that has been posted on every anti McCain site. They reprint the same article over and over again.

I especially love how they give him credit for a crash when his plane was ON DECK and shot by a missle. That alone should discredit those highly biased statements about his aviation career.

In any event, his Navy record is fair game. He is running on it. So its fair for people to ask questions. Of course, it makes you look like a jack ass when you repeat crap that you dont fact check.

please explain how my comment equates to trolling, since it is all information that is true and for the most part relevant. i can openly admit that i had read about his five planes before. I didn't have the information at the time related to how they went down, or were destroyed. this is my error, but i neither introduced false information nor was intentionally misleading.

also, by far and by large the republicans are on the mass mail attack agenda. i've never ran into a single democrat based one but have seen many republican ones.

I enjoy watching all these clip-cloppers show up to defend horrid statements by their candidate. Statements they would jump all over the opposition for.

Quote :
"There's a bit more on Georgia and Ukraine and NATO. What Obama and Biden favor is for NATO to offer these two countries accession to the "Membership Action Plan" (or MAP), a process set up in the late 1990s to help aspirant countries prepare for possible membership in the Alliance. MAP isn't a promise of membership, and the last members to join NATO were in MAP for nearly a decade. It would take at least as long for Ukraine and Georgia to become members of NATO, not least since one of the criterion for membership is that there are no territorial disputes involving the country that is requesting membership... A lot of mumbo jumbo on NATO accession procedures, this. But here's the kicker: What Palin said is that Ukraine and Georgia should become NATO members now. Not even Bush is arguing that. (He, too, favors MAP.) McCain was with Bush on this until recently and, I assume, if asked still is. Palin didn't know the distinction, and is suggesting that these countries get into NATO tomorrow. She may not realize that this is a decision that NATO members need to make collectively, all 27 of them, which won't happen, given that MAP was denied the countries just a few months ago..."

^^^Alliance or not, I would at least like to see hesitation at the thought of potentially causing a world-ending war.

v Agreed. While I want a leader to hesitate when it comes to the actual event, it would be crazy for a politician not to put on a strong front when asked a question like this in a speculative interview. Palin might be the primary reason I won't be voting for McCain, but that's not got anything to do with this interview. She said the right things.

Ytsejam, dont worry about it. The only people who are pissed off about her statements are people that would never vote for McCain/Palin. I think that her statements would be considered reasonable by the majority of the 20% undecided, and probably by a decent number of democrats (if they are really honest with themselves).

Im pretty thrilled with what I have read so far about the interview. Doesnt appear to have made any major gaffes.

Maybe its because of Palin's too close connection with Joel's Army that she is willing to bring about armamgedon.

Umm... not sure if I see what you're trying to say here.

In almost every possible regard, a Cold War 2 would be MUCH MUCH MUCH better than a World War 3.

In fact, CWII could help our economy substantially.

If you would like, in here or any an entirely new thread dedicated to it, quote things i have said on tww and then post up excerpts from these democrat chains. if you have them in your email that should be easy, and if you do not then i'm sure that you can surely google whatever it is you need to find and display them accordingly so we can see my words and how they nearly verbatim cite the trash you of which you accuse me of perpetuating.

I don't think Palin was being irrational or unreasonable by any means. My point was that both Palin and McCain are grasping at straws to find some type of universal appeal. Don't focus so much on the words themselves, instead focus on the concepts presented with the words. Neither Palin or McCain can compete against Obama and Biden once the debates commence. You'll see, without their scripted answers, both Palin and McCain will be unable to go toe-to-toe against the single greatest leader of our time, the President of the future, the one, Obama.

Rock the Vote!
