honda/nissan/toyota
9/2/2008 3:27:43 PM
volvo wagon.
9/2/2008 3:29:12 PM
crv, pilot, rogue, murano, highlander, 4runner, pathfinderof course some are gonna be used more than others.
9/2/2008 3:31:21 PM
i hate to say it, but CRVyou could honestly probably score a new envoy or trailblazer for around 15k right now with the sales events and new model year coming out, i got $18k off my truck
9/2/2008 3:31:53 PM
15K, you could get 15 honda civics!!!!!
9/2/2008 3:34:00 PM
or 1,500 $10 hookers, imagine the possibilities
9/2/2008 3:35:45 PM
of course im leaning towards honda/nissan/toyota/volvo but trying to put my finger on the right one+ it has to be safe (there will be a little girl coming along in about a month) = volvo
9/2/2008 3:48:25 PM
find one of those sites that does the safety ratings. btw, westgateimports.neti hear they have good cars (they have a premium line now, cars that havnt been wrecked, so you can look into that)
9/2/2008 3:50:04 PM
I would look into a v70. My parents have had about a half dozen volvo wagons, they are good for kids/dogs/extended trips/hauling/safety etc. Turbo models are pretty quick as well, plus most are considered luxury. My next car might be an all-wheel drive turbo wagon.
9/2/2008 3:53:14 PM
when i had to ask myself this question a few months back i ended up going with a Infinity QX4. it has everything I wanted, leather seats, heated front and back, GPS, entertainment center, 4WD, HID head lights, running boards, roof rack, towing package, decent engine. you can get them for 15k all day long.[Edited on September 2, 2008 at 4:39 PM. volvos are the land rover of cars. maintenance and repair costs are high, and there isnt much you can work on yourself without expensive equipment- meaning this is something young parents should likely STAY AWAY FROM.

I think that (2004 Volvo V70 Premium) is pretty close to the model my mom has. It is fun to drive and very smooth. Interior is lush and curves around you, sound system is exceptional for stock. Price also seems pretty decent considering its under 45k.
9/3/2008 1:22:16 PM
GMC Envoy, got a 2002 with 165k on it and still goin strong, cant complain
9/3/2008 3:14:33 PM
BTTT with this one.I'm looking for a mid-sized SUV. Never had a truck or an SUV, but now with a dog and probably a baby within the next year or two...I need something with more space. No to wagons. One...I don't like them. Two...I live in an area where the roads flood about 10-12 times a year and I need a little clearance to get out. Will most likely go used...and I'm okay with that. Could probably end up spending between $15-$20k. Would prefer not to go over $20k.I haven't looked that much, but I really like the VW Touaregs and Jeep Grand Cherokees. I know I can get a 4 or 5 year old Touareg for less than $20k...but I don't know if I want to go that old. I've seen some 2011 Grand Cherokees around $23-$25k...but the older they get, the more they lose the new body style I like.Any other suggestions?
3/26/2013 12:00:10 PM
Is the new Explorer too big for you? I really like it.
3/26/2013 12:35:42 PM
^ I do too. I saw an article in the NYT about the performance of domestic car makers, and the Explorer's sales are up something stupid like 60%.
3/26/2013 12:41:10 PM
Eh...it's on the verge of being too big. I live and work downtown. I've got a tight parking space behind my office, and would rather not clunk it up with a bigger SUV.I do like the 2013 style of the Ford Explorer, but it's also $30k. I like the 2012 and '11 versions less.[Edited on March 26, 2013 at 12:50 PM. Reason : .]
3/26/2013 12:42:36 PM
We like ours, but knowing you are downtown I might not recommend it. It is a little wide, probably not the best for parking on tight streets.
3/26/2013 12:44:56 PM
^^ if you can find a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee I would highly recommend it. the 2010 is the first year of the WKII which is the latest body style. I have a 2007 which is a WK and love it. My best friend bought a 2010 and it's much improved.
3/26/2013 1:22:49 PM
diesel toureg is a beast but expensive. maybe the tiguan? if you're going to do a lot of city driving, what about an escape hybrid?
3/26/2013 2:05:13 PM
BMW X3? Or are those still above your price range?
3/26/2013 2:33:35 PM
^^ Didn't they quit making the Toaureg in diesel? Maybe I can get a 4 or 5 year old one in my price range. I don't like the look of the Tiguan and it's a little too small.^Pretty sure any used X3 would be out of my price range. If it somehow dropped into it, I would gladly get one though. I'll check out the Escape. I'll add that although I live in and work in the city...it's Charleston...not a big city. We're actually thinking of getting a street legal golf-cart to use around town (pretty common down here). I'll need the space of an SUV to travel and see the mom in Whiteville, the sister in Raleigh, and the sister in-law in Columbia. We also hit up the beach frequently, so stuffing all of the beach stuff in my car can be tough sometimes. We're actually driving up to Connecticut in June, and I'm dreading the trip if I still have my 3-series 1997 BMW at the time. Would love to get an SUV before then.[Edited on March 26, 2013 at 2:41 PM. Reason : .]

Get a van you pussy
3/26/2013 9:42:10 PM
I say newest Jeep Grand Cherokee...although it sounds like you've got a lot of highway driving ahead...not exactly an SUV's strong point.
3/27/2013 8:53:48 AM
for an SUV the Cherokee actually does pretty good. It's has the deal where it can kill 4 out the 8 cylinders (in the V8 Hemi model) under light load and hwy cruising to get better gas mileage. I think its rated 25 mpg hwy. granted that's not great but for a full size SUV not bad either. If I could I would have gotten the diesel version. tons of torque and great mpg but also hard to find.
3/27/2013 8:59:32 AM
I thought the grand cherokee diesel was a brand new for 2013 model?
3/27/2013 10:19:07 AM
3/27/2013 10:30:44 AM
^previous generation is nice, albeit 'appliances'. A good friend of mine had a fwd/4cyl/5-speed model that gave great service, and got 24-28mpg. Good utility, but no soul
3/27/2013 11:06:01 AM
^^in my second hand experience the last gen Escape is a POS. 2 people I know had their transmissions fail prematurely. Nevermind that car was basically unchanged over 7-8 years?
3/27/2013 12:39:19 PM
I thought they changed the transmission halfway through and went with a new 5-speed automatic, or was that just the ranger? I didn't think the 5-speed auto had problems like the older ford autos from the early 2000's.
3/27/2013 1:09:12 PM
Not liking what I'm seeing so far.I'm being a tad superficial and looking in the luxury area right now (Lexus RX 350, Audi Q7/Q5, Acura MDX)...but even at the low ends, I'm looking at around $25k for something that's going to be at least 5 years old and around the 75k mileage mark.I guess I should be avoiding dealers if I'm looking for any kind of "deal". This is pretty much my first big vehicle purchase as well. Didn't know if that was obvious from my previous posts already.
