Just wondering what the best way to take would be? I figure I can either go 40 east to 95 North or take Capital/1 North and hit 85. I've never taken the 85 route, so I don't know how traffic will compare. Which of these two routes do you think would have less traffic/be quicker? Thought maybe some of you guys might know these routes pretty well. Thanks.

85 will have much better traffic. There's rarely anyone on that road... however, once you get to 95, it's going to suck either way around Richmond and points North. take 85. 95 is a nightmare.

Depends on when you are leaving. US 1/85 is fine once you get away from Raleigh, but it begins as Capital Boulevard which can be a pain. Barring wrecks, most of your traffic (and there will be plenty) will be Richmond-North, after they come together.

Making that drive next week (Baltimore actually). I really, really hate anything from Richmond up. I damn near decided to take the train instead.

85 route. Once you get about 15 miles out from Wake Forest there isn't any traffic usually.

you shouldn't have a problem.

it was actually pretty smooth sailing until a wreck at 495.We took 1/85 route and it was really nice.

we got stuck in severe heavy traffic on I-495 heading to Reston. Not sure what it was...so it must have been the same accident. (was around 11:30/12am)

oh yeah, it was horrible. It was at that toll road exit. 4 or 5 lanes of traffic got fed into the breakdown lane. A bunch of cars were all piled together and really messed up.

I always take US 1 to 85. Just beware of the cops in Warren County...I've learned from experience
